    Clutch trouble

    As you know I've converted my R5 to EFI but during mapping the clutch started to slip so the mapping couldn't be finished, its a volvo 480T jobbie and its been fine till now, I've had a helix paddle clutch before and it worked fine for 3000miles till it broke, I don't wanna have to spend 300quid evry couple of months on clutches, is there anythin else out there thats gunna last longer but still do the job?

    I used a volvo cover with an AP 4 paddle plate, never slipped on the strip with 1.7 bar boost & Mickey T's... Bought the paddle plate from Techcraft for £167.
    Wasn't nasty to drive either like some paddles i've used.
    How much torque you think you'll be making ??

    Interesting, I'll have to look into that.

    Dunno how much torque but its gotta be good for over 220ft lb

For what I did the Valeo was a waste of time, the AP worked pretty well, but after half a season it was starting to slip as I pulled away (so about 50 miles and 40 hard starts), it was probably OK, but that was the end of the season. It's not a road clutch either, so won't last. For my current engine I started from scratch - steel flywheel, AP race clutch, bolts, release bearing, and custom bearing carrier.     How much power does your 5 make then?

    I had a feeling I might have to go for somit different

    I suppose it all depends on what you're doing with the car , mine was on the road a little, not daily driver & drag strip occasionally... I reckon i was making 230bhp or thereabouts with the wossners & 1.7 bar. It wasn't heavy on the foot either & not really on/off as some i've used.
    Mine was a cerametalic 4 paddle from AP.

    Thats the problem, although I do use mine on the track and at pod, most of the time its getting trashed around at the weekends on local B-roads

    Thats what I'm using on mine at the moment, couldn't get a 215mm in time for pod so went for the 180mm version. Seems to be ok at the min, only done about 1000 miles so far, see what happens!

    i've been using the same clutch as haz and scoff cerematalic 4paddle clutch from techcraft...mines roughly putting out 220-235 and 220-230lbft i use it every day or so...and its fine at 20-25psi drives nice with the long arm throw that the volvo 440t offers....i had a sachs and a valeo clutch and both didn't last 2weeks even after pod. bout 300quid down the drain plus fitting....give techcraft a call!.... if your running a 215mm flywheel then take down these notes when you call...7.62mmx215mm a paddle sprung center ceremetalic plate with spline to fit clio172 input shaft. 01926 403721 ps the older 440 460 480 turbo's use 200mm flywheels later 1's use 215mm

    Just been reading this thread...please could someone confirm if I can use the Techcraft clutch on a F7P engine, & GT Turbo gearbox. Thanks

    Hi Duncs,

    The clutch waddie was talking about is the 215mm plate from Techcraft, used in the later 215mm volvo cover. You need to order the 7.62mm thick plate since there are different types available from them. Sometimes they're AP, sometimes they're Helix, both seem to work well if you are not doing 1000's of miles per year.

    I have a 2nd hand clio 172 215mm flywheel off my engine for grabs if you wanted to go that route.

    This is an interesting thread, I need to find out some info on this as I need to do a clutch change on my 5. So what size is the standard 5 flywheel, im guessing the 215mm one is from the clio 172. Is there a real benefit from using this setup?

    the early 440turbo B18ft engine uses 200mm flywheel and the later models use 215mm flywheel..standard 5 flywheel is 200mm correct me if im wrong scoff..?

    i did about 7thousand miles last year on the techcraft 4paddle clutch and its taken sum punishment at around 22psi still goin strong

    So... what do you need to do to fit a 215mm clutch on a R5 or R19?
    Can you just swap flywheels from another car?

    oli stop being a girl.. my volvo one does the job with more torque than yours... maybe its your driving style
