    Engine under compression!!?

Hey guys well what i thought was oil coming out of my dump valve is actually oil being pushed up out of the dipstick tube, im guessing it must be a piston ring causing the engine to put the bottom end under compression??

Has anyone else had this sort of problem?? have gone over my breather system and is all fine, oil has been drained and changed.

any help would be much appreciated

    cheers chris

have you tried a compression test. does the car breath heavy out of the oil filler cap. is the car smoking at all. the symptoms you are describing do sound like a possible ring failure mate

havent done a compression test yet all my tools are still down south need to pick them up soon, i shall try and get a tester from halfords in abit.

There is abit of smoke out the exhaust not much but it does breath heavy out the oil filler cap, if it is the rings how much am i looking for new liners and pistons with rings??

if its the rings, why not just give the existing liners a quick rehone and replace the rings? job done i would have thought a set of rings are around £60.

    Re: Engine under compression!!?

Sounds like pistons rings are worn out and presurizing the bottom end, pull it apart and see the condition of the liners they may be ok and just need a clean up with a new set of rings on the pistons.
If not a full set of new pistons/liners will be about £160-£180

how hard is it to rehone the existing liners?? How hard of a job is it to remove the pistons on the 5??

Not hard at all mate to hone liners, to remove the liners and pistons you need to remove the head and sump, undo the con-rod bolts and then pull the liner/piston out from the top. Could have it stripped down in about an hour or so if your confident to do it.

Dont forget to add gasket sets in your price as you will need both base and top sets... GSF best place for these and dont cost more than £50-£60 for the pair..

    Re: Engine under compression!!?

The set from GSF is the uprated headgasket.. Its just thicker than the std gasket, so not uprated in anyway in its structure from what i beleave.. either will do fine tho.. Dont forget price up oils and fitlers and coolant ... All adds up so its not the straight forward £160 for the piston/liner kit

of course, you might just need to fit the dipstick in a bit tighter...

Im sure ive seen other people post similar probs with dip stick and its just where the tube it fits in need crimping as its become loose with age. Not saying you dont have other probs obviously but worth a try

I certainly wouldn't rule out what Andy's mentioned - I've had to crimp the end of the dipstick tube (ooohheeeer!) myself due to the same problem

my gt used tp blow the dip stick out.Cause the plastic goes hard on the stick over time i put a little bit of tape round it problem sorted.
I have aso seen the hook bit get caught on ht leads and dislodge this way.

    Re: Engine under compression!!?

I believe there are two designs of dipstick for the GT Turbo- the earlier one tends to blow out once there's any level of crank case pressurisation (which with the simple breather system can happen) - and the later type that stays in better.

But you really should see if the dipstick blowing out is a result of worn rings, and a compression (or ideally a leak down) test will give you a good idea.

    Re: Engine under compression!!?

Right well i havent had time to get a compression tester yet, but i put some tape round the dipstick to hold it in and started her up after running on idle for about 3 minutes it was pushing oil out of the rocker seal as it was pressurizing the top end

I did that on my first Pulsar engine, although I was at about 7k rpm in 4th. I covered the dual carriagway in oily smoke...

Needless to say, i'd mullered a piston.

Sounds like you need an engine rebuilder Still go ahead anyway with compression test and do the old oil down plug hole test..
