    Using Fibreglass

Been offered a cheap rare front bumper made from fibreglass but its got a couple of cracks in it. Rather than sending it off to be repaired, I thought i'd have a pop myself as its something ive always fancied trying my hand at.

How difficult is it to use? Any tips etc much appreciated

Tim i've never used the stuff, but a bloke from work is basically holding his entire Ford Escort together with it, and if he can apply it then its pretty simple! As far as i can make out its a bit of glue and some sort of webbing which you build

Last time I used just to reinforce the underside of a bumper,
I realised you have to work quick with it! Dont be hesitant

    Re: Using Fibreglass

as it happens im amazing with fibreglass
its easy to work with, decide how much you want
an cut it into shape with nice sharp scissors, rough up
area with sandpaper, mix up resin an use a little hardner
not loads..get cheapo throw away paint brush an apply
resin, lay on sheet an buld it up from there...sand down an
apply a gel coat ,then filler the crack on the otherside.

    Re: Using Fibreglass

use fiberglass at work on the odd occasion but its simple to use, best way is to..

    1. use some p80 paper on the inside of bumper and get it nice and rough
2.wipe clean with thinners to get rid of any dust and road crap
3.tear fiberglass matting to size (do not cut as you want a rough edge not perfectly straight )
4.mix resin and harder and with an old paintbrush 'stab' the resin into the fiberglass resin don't brush it on
    5. dry it
    6. with p320 rub down the front of the bumper and make an indent into the bumper for the fiberglass filler to sit in (don't use normal filler as this will crack)
    7. apply fiberglass filler
    8.sand down, prime and paint.

Thanks for all the input guys.

Its cracks in the bumper rather than chunks missing/me having to reshape it. Once the bumper is in hand i'll post up pics of my progress so you can all laugh

    Re: Using Fibreglass

Tim, wouldnt it be worth you looking into some sort of "resin" for cracks? I would have thought you wouldnt be able to get a nice finish without raising the area around the crack, if you used fibreglass wouldnt it leave you with alot of flattening to get it back flatter? Just a thought

    Re: Using Fibreglass

That Mr H is a very good point.

Time to get googling for some sort of suitable 'filler' I guess.
