    Door hinges

OK, so I have my car back from SBS, and it's time to rebuild it. I have a problem though.. the doors are dropped, and I know it isn't the pins, because before I got it painted, I tried new pins, and the doors were still just as dropped. So, I think my hinges are ovalled.

I've done a search, and people seem to either be saying, drill them out to 8mm and fit 8mm roll pins.. OR I could drill the hinges out and fit the Torx type mechanisms that were found on later GTT's. Which is a better system? I'm guessing the torx as it was brought in at a later date - probably a better, revised system?

On a more extreme note, do you think you could remove the o.e hinges and then find stronger / better designed hinges off a more modern car and replace them all together? Obviously, you'd need to be handy with a welder.

I just don't want to drill them out, etc, and then 12 months down the line, them to be just as bad as they were! So yeh.. What do people find is the best way to sort out this problem?

I drilled mine out to 8mm, and fitted some vauxhall pins, it worked an absolute treat. I dont think you would ever line the door up propely if you fitted new hinges. Oh and remember the age of the car, those hinges should be good for a long while to come, just grease them up every now and then.

I was thinking something similar Raj.. That way, you wouldn't be damaging the actual hinge, just a removable sleeve?

i suppose it wouldnt be to hard to get something like this made.? its like a sock for the door pins isnt it. i would have thought you may have to drill the hinge a little??

As my memory serves they are all very simullar. Cant remeber the car at the time, but they were the same as my ol' mans corsa, which was a 52 plate i think. I the idea from one of the threads on the old site. Iread through so many till finally choosing that route.

Yeh, if you drilled the hinge to 8mm, then fitted a 1mm sleeve and o.e 7mm pins (I think o.e pins are 7mm)?

It would need to be 4 sleeves though, right? One for the top and one for the bottom of the hinge on the door and one for the top and the bottom of the hinge on the car body

3 for each side, 1 top and bottom, 1 in the middle.

    Re: Door hinges

    Yeh, that would work also.

It seems similar to the torx mechanism (see here: http://www.cgbmotorsport.net/door-hi...pair-584-p.asp) but I don't quite understand that, because it only has 2 inserts. Could anyone explain how these work?

looking at that, if the middle hinge has worn, as mine did slightly, you would still get play in the door i would of thought?

it the middle part of the hinge that gets worn. drill that out, insert the two brass pieces and it takes the hole back down the 7mm. then the new torx bolt should fit with no wobble. (assuming you have the threaded bit on ur hinge already)

I think I'll just drill them to 8mm, fit 8mm roll pins and keep them well greased

    Re: Door hinges

I've been putting off doing this for months. I'm scared of not drilling the hinges out straight. I've been advised that I can try putting in oversized (maybe 7.25/7.5mm?) pins in without needing the drill so I'm giving that a go first.

i did mine with daz all went smoothly just keep the drill straight not to hard tbh. mine was so worn that the drill bit took minimal metal out the hole when drilling.

if you have access to a compressor silverline do a small 90 degree drilling tool makes light work of it or ebay sell one for about a fiver for battery drills.

Anyone else know of anywhere I can get some? I tried googling it, and I can't find anything. The one company I did find said they can't do anything as small as I require.

Looking on ebay, it looks like CGB do them. COuld you not double them up? - prise one open slightly and use as an outer sleeve.

    Re: Door hinges

Its just the middle hinge that needs sleeving cos thats where the movement is,
If anyone can measure the centre hinge, top to bottom , i've got some 8MM bar here that i'll dril out.
first one to tell me centre hinge size gets a set F.O.C

    Re: Door hinges

you'll need smaller pins if i make 7MM OD sleeves !
If i make the sleeves 7MM od the inside diameter will be 6MM so your pins won't fit,
you'll have to drill out your hinges to 8MM or get smaller dia pins.
    Know what i mean ?
