    VW transporter camper

I'm looking into V dub campers, would love a T5 but a little out of my price bracket

Anybody got one or can shed some light on them?

Best engine? - common faults etc?

I'm not looking into the old skool vans as I don't wanna potentially buy myself a load of work, so thinking about a T4 - 1990's to early 2000's if I'm not mistaken?!,
seem to go from anything around £4000 up upto £12'000 depending on mileage and condition obviously.......

If anybody has got one.........get some pics up

    Re: VW camper

    I've followed the thread........exactly what I don't want

A great interesting thread, but that camper is a full on project,...........I'm after a more modern vehicle, that doesn't need vast amounts of work, just tlc

There are sooo many out there, and they differ completely, from the design of the interior, to the engine and the amount of miles on the engine, and of course the price!

No doubt I'll join a VW forum but just thought I'd see if anyone has one and could share some advice.

It does appear though that you get what you pay for, so I've just got to really consider what my budget is, and if I want a ready made camper, or if I'm prepared to modify it myself.....although I'm steering towards a ready made, registered camper.

problem with the van thing is that you cant go into the London Emission Zone, with an early van without paying fortune?

    Re: VW camper

    Ah man that is schweeeeeet

Something along those lines is what I'm on about and gonna start looking for

The London emissions thing though isn't a problem, tbh London is the last place I'd be travelling to.......

It's a dual purpose thing for me......odd weekends away with the wife, and mates as it's the new toy for us all.....and the perfect partner for night fishing

    Re: VW camper

I've had 3 T4s and love them to bits. They drive just like a car and the 2.5tdi goes forever.

Not one of mine has had less than 215,000 miles on it and my last one had 285,000 when I sold it. It still ran like clockwork and went like the clappers for what it was.

I wouldn't entertain any other engine in a t4 though.

Here's my old bus doing a 'fast' lap at Mallory park with 280,000 miles on it.

    Re: VW camper

A good mate of mine has just bought a T4 he got it for £1700.

It's in reasonable condition with MOT, it's the 1.8 diesel engine. Non turbo.

Has been welded for mot, but will need some bodywork as the arches and sliding side door have some corrosion.

probably 1.5k would turn it into a tidy van, that's without any of the cool internal stuff.

Cheers chaps. Seriously weigh up your options. I would not buy what I have ever again it's crazy amounts of work.

The T4 is a wicked van although the t25 is now old enough to become cool and with these your gonna buy some thing that will only go up in value. These will be the new bay window which are the new Splitty and are crazy money.

    Re: VW camper

As I expected good general opinions on the vans

I doubt I'll do laps round Malory though but I am if possible gonna go for the bigger engine as although I haven't driven a 1.9 I bet it's gutless?

I'm pretty clear on what I want, and it's not a project like yours bood......you've got your work cut out there mate.....and I'm happy to pay for a decent base vehicle that's in good condition!

The one that trevs put up looks great, and that's the sort of 'project' I'm willing to take on.....minor body repairs, fit out the back with a nice conversion and hopefully only a few niggles

When I've acquired myself a van I'll upload some pics, but by the looks of things I'm gonna need to travel and check a few out

Without having seen the advert, and mileage and condition dependant obviously - could be looking at £10k for something like that, maybe less, but also potentially more if it really is a minter!
