    OE big brake conversion idea's?

I am looking to upgrade the front brakes on my 19 16v cabriolet next week, can anyone suggest a OE big brake upgrade rather than me just going for OE. I am running a set of 18in khans and OE discs look tiny behind the rim at the moment.

I am thinking of the R5 GTT caliper extender brackets, R5 GTT carriers, green stuff pads and a set of 300mm 4x100 discs from a grand scenic. Anyone done this?

Anyone got a set of extender brackets for sale?

Are there any other options out there?

the extenders alot of us use are for 285/286mm discs iirc, i think most peeps with 300mm are with 4pots

I suppose we have to ask if your current brakes are in top condition? Obviously the 19 Cab is a lot heavier than a 5 but you may not need to go to 300mm discs. Here's a few options all the same.

Std discs 259mm with better pads
172/182 discs 280mm with matching calipers
Scenic discs 300mm? with 172/182 calipers
Scenic discs 300mm? with Clio 197/200 Brembo calipers

using 280mm or 300mm discs will require some kind of bracket to locate the calipers.

Do you think you would get away with a OE 300mm disc using the brakets?

I suppose there would have to be an extra 7mm+ clearance between the caliper and the edge of the disc. could always grind a slither off the caliper if not

Yeah it was the weight factor I was bothered about compared to my 5. I was thinking about the 406 brembo conversion and going 4 pot but it seems too much hassle.

How big are the caliper pistons on the 172/182 compared to a 19 16v?

It does get driven hard on twisty B roads and the brakes at the moment just aren't up to it

having good quality disc & pads are worth while... even if there the same size... better quality will be alot better than cheap kwik fit sh*t... worth going down that route 1st, before spending £££'s on conversions...

Second that. I've got brembo 4 pots with 330mm discs and they had cheap pads and didn't work well at all. Now on ds2500 and like a new setup.

21 turbo calipers are meant to be a decent upgrade on Renault 19's.

I'm not sure what's involved with fitting them to the 19, might be worth a check on the relevant 19 owners forums.

If you do go down this route I have a new pair of calipers and sliders, so get in touch if you want them.

Re: OE big brake conversion idea's?

Think i'm going to stick with my calipers for now and go for a bigger disc and the extender brackets.

Can anyone please recommend a very good set of pads? I was thinking of the EBC green stuff pads, never used them but i'm told they are half decent?

also where is the best place to get a set of extender brackets from?

    cheers

Green stuff are sh*t, as for extenders there not of the shelf... Would have to get the custom made....

Luckily the 285mm upgrade was a popular upgrade for the 5, a few companies/people made the extenders and sold them seperate...

Re: OE big brake conversion idea's?

I won't be getting the green stuff pads then , I know I can use the R5 GTT extender bracket on my 19, i'm just wonedering what size disc I can use if I do? the 5 uses a 238 disc and my 19 uses a 258 disc so there is a difference of 20mm. If I use the caliper brackets is this going to allow me to use a 20mm bigger disc on my 19 with my standard caliper and carrier compared to a 5 running a 286? i.e. 306mm

I was told to use a 5 carrier when going for a 286 disc on the front a while back, would this be to bring the caliper in to suit the diameter of the disc?

i had r19 track car and i fitted 285mm bb tuning big brake kit off my r5 you need to use r5 caliper brackets as the r19 brackets push the pads out to far.

So does that mean there is a difference in offset somewhere?

I imagine they will be pretty good if they fit with the right m/c, the brakes are badass on my daily driver 307hdi

r19 caliper brackets have the bigger offset, all r5, r19, r11, mk1 clios all use the same hubs just different size bearings.

Cheers for that, do you have any idea where the extra 20mm comes from on the 19 to run a 258 disc compared to a 238 on a 5? Would it be on the hub, carrier or caliper?

Re: OE big brake conversion idea's?

So can I run a 300mm disc using a 5 extender bracket on my 19 using my standard calipers?

When the extender bracket is fitted does it offset the caliper slightly from OE position? Or does it keep it exactly inline with the existing disc?

Sorry for all the questions, I just don't want to buy the brackets and discs (£100) and then they don't fit
