    Plooms of smoke :(

    hi all, some time ago maybe in december mikes 5 developed loads of smoke intermitantly. as the new turbo was on order we thought it must be turbo gone, oh well when it comes that will sort it, well fitted turbo yesterday full t25 from mr blunty (thanx) and drove from brighton to phils meet a217 45/50 miles no probs, had a great evening then drove back no probs, got back and left car running at macs drive through and the smoke did same thing, it only seems to do it now when hot soon as it cools down it goes again, i also think as we put a braided hose thanx markey mark and did oil service the cars got better oil pressure than before causing more smoke, ive got a feeling the old turbo was fine, i want to speak to markey mark but i thought id see if someone else has had this before, im now thinging its the oil ring on piston as it only does it when hot( 1/2 on gauge low stat fitted) did think valve stem seals too but wouldnt that do it all the time cold or hot???? anyways thanx in advance for any good news lol ........... ps car max'ed on 5 psi on trip, stinks badly of oil

    I would be checking no kinks in oil return to sump, also I wouldbe checking to see if oil is in the rear housing of the turbo, I would also be looking to see if oil is present in the engine exhaust manifold pre turbo, and do a dry comp test on all 4 cylinders with fuel pump relay removed and TDC sensor removed don't forget to do it with throttle wide open, if any of the cylinders are down do a wet test and see what the results are post your dry comp test results on here and wet comp test results aswell

    hi james hope your ok m8, no kinks in any part of breather system, im going to remove telephone breather and put into mini filter if this stops then it looks like engine is going to be breathing heavy when hot, i checked manifold yesterday before fitting turbo theres no oil present there on manifold and turbo is new as you know, it started in december think engines old now may need need piston rings, we got rebuilt engine in shed that was in old one but that had major leaks on new seals but at meet last night member told me that could of been the old none existant breather system also minor pitting on piston 4 due to det may get pic to post but will try breather pipe method 1st roughly what would wet/dry reading be mate tc........ ps wheres fuel relay located

    Take the elbow off the turbo and check to see if there's any oil in there.

    Same. If the rings were shot it would smoke on boost and hoy loads of oil out of the breather system.

    im more inclined to go for the ring worn as it did it on old and this new turbo was on car 1 day and didnt go beyond 5psi and 4k on revs, does anyone know the piston readings so i can check with compression gauge. my mates got a snap on

    You can get all sorts of readings depending on the engine but i would say somewhere between 140 psi and 160psi the important thing is that all readings are within 10%.

    When its sitting on the drive ticking over and smoking heavily just pop the rocker cover cap off and see if the smoke reduces at all.

    Also just because the turbo hasn't done any miles/boost doesn't mean it won't be the issue if you have an oil pressure/feed problem a turbo won't last 5 mins.

    Worth taking the complete oil feed off and checking for any blockages and the one way valve is working correctly.

    thanx m8 i put new turbo on with a braided hose too i also primed turbo so i know oil is coming through from the braided hose out of the return ill make some more checks next week when i can get to my mate garage

    As mentioned in a pm, check oil pressure with a mechanical guage going to the turbo. Its worth doing

    got this today mate, mot done passed but had 2 advisarys so thats out of the way, got these readings looks like rings, got wp end 110-145-145-145 dry and wet 175-175-175-175 looks like head is sweet to go on other engine and must be 73mm ish good news also breathing heavy from filler cap. what ya recon thanx in advance

    Looks like rings to me if you got 65psi difference from wet to dry on one cylinder

    Did you get a good seal on the cylinder 1st time around with the comp tester, I always used to have trouble with that end, may be worth doing one more 'dry' test on that cylinder, just to make sure..
