    Peoples Opinions???

Not sure if you have seen my projects thread but I am rebuilding my 5 (very slowly!!)

I am ready to take my engine out and have come up with the following plan....

I have attached two brackets to my garage wall with heavy duty bolts and I have run a scaffold bar between the two brackets.

I have got a block and tackle to attach to the scaffold bar and lift the engine out with.

Do people think this set up will lift the engine no problem without bending the scaffold bar etc??

    Thanks

I can't see it bending a scaff bar even with the box attached, might flex a bit, those brackets need to be very secure

^^^^^^^^^ I agree. You will NOT bend or collape a scaffold bar!! Although you could get abit of flex/sag if the lengths too long. Obviously the shorter the length the less bend ul get. The thing that's worrying me is these brackets. Are they being fixed to brickwork? What type of fixings??

    Re: Peoples Opinions???

I have taken a few pics to show what I have done...

The scaffold bar is approx a metre longer than the width of the car.

The brackets I got from work and have drilled four mounting holes in them.

You will have to forgive me here but I have bought the bolts that have like a metal rawl plug around them that expands as you screw the bolt in.

The bolt that goes into the wall was approx 120mm long.

    Think it will work????

i would rent / borrow / buy / steal a hoist on wheels tbh and whip it out outside where you have some room to move, as you will struggle like hell, if its your 1st time. oh and get a mate round to help. last thing you want is engine and box on top of you and scaffold bar thru the windscreen

    Re: Peoples Opinions???

I did take an engine out of my old 5 turbo many moons ago.

Another member on here has offered me the loan of an engine crane but getting the car outside is not an option as my garage goes straight out onto the road

Do you not think that my amazing invention will work then?

I do appreciate everyones advice and wont take negative comments personally ok

    Re: Peoples Opinions???

if you and a mate can hang on the bar safely then it'll hold!

My only worry would be that it flexed enough to pull out of its angle iron seat... Might be worth drilling the tube and dropping a bolt through the tube and into the bracket!

    good idea.

its not a heavy engine, if you can hang off the bar like has been said then im sure itll be fine.

    Re: Peoples Opinions???

Thanks Ashy I had a go at hanging off the bar and it was fine. I am no little lad either (17.5 stone) so surely the engine wont weigh that much?

I was tempted to do what you said about the bolt through the bracket and the pole......or a couple of spot welds maybe???

    Re: Peoples Opinions???

as above id say it was ok,but your risk aint it.
those four bolts each side are counterleaving with weight bearing on them and not outward so my guess and it is a guess due to you lifting an engine and all it should be ok.

defo fix the tube to the bracket an you could offer up more support under it.

    Re: Peoples Opinions???

    Thanks for your advice.

I think I will def attach the pole to the brackets. And I could get some more scaffold poles and cut them to give it more support underneath.

I am literally going to lift the engine, roll the car back and drop the engine to the floor. So hopefully all going well the pole wont be under stress for too long

If it does come down and smash my 5- I am going to look a bit silly lol!!

    Re: Peoples Opinions???

I got up early and grabbed the welder from work

So I am just going out to pop a couple of spot welds between the brackets and the scaffold pole........and then its engine out time!!!!

Ill get some pics whilst I do it.

Thanks for everybodies input Gotta love the RTOC.

    Re: Peoples Opinions???

Obviously keep the car mobile after you've taken the engine out so you can push it back & drop the engine on the floor.

As you have to dismantle the driveshafts most people just drop the hubs out.

Let us all know how you get on!

    Re: Peoples Opinions???

The chin up bar is a good idea

    and the engine is out!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The scaffold bar worked a treat with minimal bend which was good. Am going to leave it in situ for any engine out issues in the future.

Cheers for all the advice lads. I have attached a couple of pics below, the rest are in my project thread if you fancy a look.

    - ready to lift

    - clear of the engine bay

    - Engine out

That's such a good idea, great work man

I'd shift that WD-40 though, just in case.

    Re: Peoples Opinions???

Thanks :-) I was quite impressed at how well it worked and how smoothly it all happened.

As for the wd40- do you mean because it is on the battery?
