    Fuel pump broken?

    Hi,

I was wondering if my fuel pump is kaput.
There is no fuel going to my carb.

I have disconnected the hose going to the fuel filter.
When i try to start the car, there is no fuel coming from the pump.

The pump isnt working at all when i crank the car.
Is this normal or should the pump be working al the time?
Is the pump faulty or is there something else wrong?

    grtz, Sam

    Re: Fuel pump broken?

Could be the relay, or the tdc sensor.....the tdc sensor will provide the trigger pulse for the relay to fire up the fuel pump, there is a way of bridging the relay to power the fuel pump permanently.

, have a wriggle of the tdc sensor wires at the aei also , this got mine working with the same symptoms as yours. after buying a pointless new relay

up above your fuses in the passenger footwell, you may have to lower the bottom section to make access easier, remove two actually maybe three tiny hex screws..

it looks like this, big 6 pin relay-

    Re: Fuel pump broken?

The reason the pump wasn't working was:
A forgotten cable!!! Dumb ass me!!
The cable from the computer to the front of the engine.
Dont know what it's for but that was the problem.

    tnkx for your help!

Tdc sensor, tells the aei where abouts the piston is in its stroke so that ignition timing can be calculated. Also shows rpm, the fuel pump gets its signal to run from the engine turning(its a safety cut off thing)

    Re: Fuel pump broken?

I thought the tdc sensor is the sensor on top of the gearbox?

There is a new problem occurred.

When i drive for 10 miles at 75 mph my car begins to shock and hesitate.
When i press the gas pedal the shocking gets heavier. and the car doesnt goes any faster.
If i press the clutch pedal the engine stalls. (there is no idle)

    Ive checked compression. All okay.
Ive tried to changed the carb to standard.
Renewed the fuel pressure regulator and fuel filter. fuel pump is okay.
    Ive fitted a new bov.
    It all doesnt help.

I hope someone here can help.

Plugs/leads and distributor cap 1st., check all is well and working and plugs gapped and good.

Give all the wiring and vacum hoses to the AEI unit a good check over for leaks and check for broken wires and or plugs loose.

Do a VOLTAGE check on the charging circuit to Eliminate alternator/battery faults.

Does it still have the overboost switch fitted? If so pull it off and try a drive see if any difference..

Check ALL BOOST and vaccum hoses.

Fuel leaks, could be the Carburettor,, eg the THROTTLE DIAPHRAM...

Fuel pressure reg also worth checking.

Check EVERYTHING over no matter how small or unrelated..Can be a strange cause sometimes.

Get a VIDEO up if you can, gives us an idea of engine NOTE so we can hear for the usual suspects.

Any probs shout fella as there is some seious knowledge on here for the 5GTT

    Tnkx for ur reply.

I find it strange that the problem only occurs when ive driven for 10 miles. So when the engine is hot.

Also idle is unsteady it goes up a little bit every other second

Go through the above mate, but tbh there are a MULTITUDE of sins to go through.

Nut an bolt the whole car if you can, but it is incredibly hard to pin point specific faults unless in front of me, can only speculate....is without doubt a simple one its just which one

    Re: Fuel pump broken?

I was thinking the float chamber wasn't filling up fast enough
so i tried a drilled out needle valve.
It seemed to help at the first test run.
But on the second test run the problem still occurred

Ive changed the plugs, leads, dizzycap and rotor... Nothing!

It seems to run fine with a 2000 rpm idle. But idle keeps hunting and she stalls sometimes.

Tomorrow im bringing her to a garage for a co measurement.
    Man she keeps me busy...

    Back from the garage.
There is to much air and fuel going in. so the co screw doesnt function.
Going to check all hoses again!

    Re: Fuel pump broken?

New poster! (less than 10 posts)

I was trying to investigate what was wrong with my car (and something currently still is), but things that might help:
    If you suspect fueling issue:
    - get this cheapo inline fuel filter of transparent plastic, the kind with not paper element but that drilled plastic so it doesn't restrict. Place it just before the carb. => is fuel going smoothly?
    - get a fuel pressure gauge or similar. At least in Finland you can buy gauges to measure water pressure etc from shops who sell things related to plumbing. Sure, it won't work as long as real fuel pressure gauge, but it doesn't cost that much either, and is usually available locally. I found a cheap motorbike fuel pressure gauge for around £10, it doesn't go high enough for car use, but enough for idling pressure to be checked (around 4-5PSI?).
    - check / buy fuel pressure regulator with a gauge in it

=> at least you should eliminate the possibility for it to be related to fueling

    Additional checks:
    - For me, it was a loose earth connection on the ecu. So I would check and clean the earthing of the ecu. Because if you're not missing air or fuel, then it's the spark?
    - Also check the TDC connector, because without it working properly it would kill (stop) the engine?
    - As mentioned above, check the air pressure safety switch, to my understanding you can completely disconnect it to be sure it doesn't have a role. Just take care that the wire ends don't touch anything and put it back when you go back on the road.

These are just some ideas I went through with mine in the last couple of days.

    Re: Fuel pump broken?

Try removing the fuel pump relay and bridging the wires, could be breaking down when it gets hot.
