High temp silver paint mate, brush on or spray if your feeling posh
did mine last week jesus,
i was going to post a similar thread as iv seen many people use different things, i just went with some silver hammerite, had some clear gloss in the garage and went over it wen it was dry.
my engine bay was an absolute mess oil all over the place.
i got the GUNK out with a brush, then used a wire brush
benj.
cheers benj , thats the ticket..is that smooth or hammerd , whatever they call it...
jesus, i used autoglym engine degreaser on my engine bay and its unreal.. i'd get that and gunk although im thinking the glym's the better one..
Thats the game benj, same as i done. Shame my gearbox only lasted about a thousand mile though before going pop
Once clean, Id recommend etch priming it first matey. Not that expensive and will make it more durable.
when you spray etch on, you can sometimes see it 'fizz' (only a little mind) on the surface as it eats into the surface a bit.....So it looks like its doing something anyway.
Although hammerite is a one coat solution I suppose
i used hammerite silver brush on. worked a treat after i shoved the box inside a parts washer it came out mint.
Matty, if you want it to last the key is in the de-greasing and the priming.
If i were you i would use your gunk and a long stiff bristled brush, and HOT soapy water to get in all the nooks and crannies. Then a good rinse. (before you do this the lid from a small tin of filler (flexible plastic) blocks the diff holes off perfectly. I f you have an airline blow it dry and you will quickly see where you have missed!
Then i would either etch prime (aka Sam) or use Metal Ready primer (i used this before - v good).
As for top coat, a high solids paint like Por-15 is ideal, and you get a good smooth coat from a brush. A 2 pac laquer on top may be over kill but will really protect it. Por 15 lasts very well on its own.
Hope it goes well m8
last time i had to do somthing like this i went down to a local jet wash.. £3 later and a bit of degreaser and it was very close to clean, then i attacked it with a red scotch pad, then i attacked it with a cheap pot of halfords engine paint.. did the job.. but i imagine that por15 stuff would be better..
Sorry bud would have though you would have wanted the all singing all dancing o.e bare cast aluminium finish. When you want these windows anyway?
i painted everything in my bay and it looked awesome, then i started to drive the thing and the mess resumed. the only blessing of having it all painted is that its easyer to clean.
