    Uprated Gearbox?

Just wondering if anyone knows what the best solution is for running big power?

Fit the VAG box. Or pay Scoff to, if he has time that is.

Depends how much power your running, most people still use the original gearbox with no problems. Only really high power i recon you'll need to start upgrading

Yeah, sorry, I was assuming that no-one calls up to 240 bhp big power these days as that's almost the 'normal'.

I was thinking a reference to big power meant nearer to 300.

Really? When I joined the club and started talking about 250bhp, the responses I got made me feel as if I was talking about breaking the sound barrier.

If the standard box can handle around 250bhp, I won't bother. I was just cautious as a couple of peeps mentioned the box wouldn't last long at that power.....

    Also, what's a VAG box?

Ahh cool... that's good to hear. I may just get mine looked over then before it all goes back in.

Just out of curiosity, what engine was Ian talking about?

Clio 1.8 16v, Williams, Clio 172/182, Volkswagen 1.8T, Volvo 480T etc. All can be made to make big power with some work

Oh, my bad... I just assumed the C1J would be default engine in this section. I've never considered transplanting something else in the 5.... kinda attached to the C1J. Great little engine.

Mine's already on it's second box..... really can't be arsed to be changing them every 4 months. Had that with my 200sx.

    Less work, the better.

Having it freshened up is prob a good thing to have done if it out, that will make it last longer

Well no, I ment that he wasn't talking soley about C1J, because in the scheme of things 240hp is not a right lot these days. It's still as much as you're likely to get from a C1J, without a lot of work though.

Not sure where you guys are from, but could you recommend someone that could overhaul my box in the South?

The power figures have definitely gone up over the years. My 200sx was running close to 300bhp and even then, that became quite normal.

I like the idea of pushing the envelope with the C1J... maybe it'll be done one day. Will have to see how I get on once it's all dialed in after the rebuild.

That's quite a fair price, but I suppose it depends on what will need changing.....

To be honest, I'd probably prefer to ship it to someone who I know will do a proper job, instead of taking a gamble locally...

these two currant boxes that have given up on you,i take it that there donor second hand boxes?,which can be fine but if your expecting to run big power then there not going to last long are they, your not gna know the mileage etc,new box built well should last you longer i would have thought.

Yeah mate.... the first box was the original (164k miles), but the second box I had overhauled by a blokey up the road from me. All in all it cost me £100 and then 6 months later after fitting it... it was fooked.

They can last for 200k with a lot more power/torque than standard.

Over double the standard power/torque output is pretty impressive.

really, its taken me 5 years to get my c1j to 230bhp@wheels(im assuming your bhp quoted is flywheel power), last rr day at motoscope there was only 1 other c1j 5 that made more power and that was glens with the nos .
although if i were to fit a slightly bigger turbo im sure ill be knocking on the 300 mark @wheels

my gearbox seems to be handling the extra torque with no probs although it will be interesting to see how it handles a bit more girp once i get new tyres , its just a rebuilt standard box with gripper diff fitted .
