16v brakes? extender kit? .... confused help please

hi guys, ive done a search and all its done is hurt my head even more lol.

Aim is for more braking power.

I dont really like the idea of the extender kit i know alot of people have used them with no problems just preper to have a bigger caplier.

Now the Clio 1.8 16v brakes are 259mm? what would i need to fit these brakes? capliers? clio disks? to the 5. carriers etc as well? any other cars that offer a straight swap onto the 5? maybe the newer clio sport ones etc got 15inch alloys soo plenty of room

I wouldn't worry about using extenders, every fancy brake kit uses them. Still, if you don't want to use them the 259mm clio brake is your only choice, you only need disks and caliper carrier, the caliper is the same as GTT.

Equally, standard brakes with decent pads work very well.

why do you need extra braking power?

is your car suddenly 1200kg, or well over 230bhp?

i'd agree with andy - decent discs and pads and a change of brake fluid should sort it.
also test your servo and one way valve is working.

Agree but the Clio route is a very cheap upgrade, the disc's are no more then a pair for the 5 and the callipers you can get from the breakers for around 20 pounds a pair so you get an upgrade for a 20 pounds outlay if you had to replace the disc's anyway, not often you get a cheap but effective upgrade.

Can any confirm weather or not the GTT/16v difference is in the hub or the caliper bracket ? I need to fit 16v hubs in the week (before ND) and the 16v discs I ordered havn't turned up. Wondering if my GTT brakes will work with the 16v hubs.

16v and GTT hub pick up points are the same, it's the carriers that are different. 99% sure.

I'm 100% sure the carrier (and of course the disc) is the oK to fit to the Gtt upright and hub assembly.....my car works perfectly on this set-up and even my 6x14" wheels clear the calipers.

more than a chance, they will do. I upgraded from GTT hubs to 16V hubs and just swapped the brakes over.

Im not questioning anyones knowledge of how good the brakes are, ive not even driven my 5 yet.

All im wanting to do is have a slightly better setup, i do like late braking and quite hard at times and i dont want to go out on standard brakes to find that maybe they are not as good as i would like them to be, i dont see the problem with having too much braking power than not enough?

I should have just asked earlier I had some folk telling me I'd need the discs, others telling me they might just go on. I've ordered 16v discs, so I may swap upto them if I can find caliper hangers. I reached, and subsequently exceeded the capacity of the standard brakes a long time ago, I should do something about it really

The downside is handling, you up the unsprung weight and inertia.

The cup cars, although far from the ultimate saloon race car, ran standard disks and calipers on slicks. Would they have fitted bigger brakes if they could, probably, did they do 2 laps then crash because they had no brakes - no.

are you sure you want to do that? I fitted 239x8mm disks with fancy pads, they're fine for a couple of big stops. They can dangle me in my belts

As mentioned above the Clio 16V is a cheap way of getting an upgrade without the expense of a large brake conversion using extending brackets.

Yeah well on my VTS the standard brakes where ok for 2 laps on track then they would start dieing, then i moved up up to 306 gti6 setup, taking disk size from 239 (i think) odd to 283mm....

But it doesnt matter so much now we will see how they go if i can get me hands on some carriers

what pads will you use, they make much more difference than the diameter of your disks. Note that the 16V and the GTT use the same pads.

use the Ferrodo DS2500, Russell T found that the M1144 didn't work as well from cold. Certainly I had no problems with the DS2500. I liked them so much I bought a set for my Twingo
