Renault 5 GT Turbo Track Car or my Corsa VXR

    First post!

4 of my mates have Renault 5 GT Turbos, a car i've wanted since i was 16!

However, i can't afford to run my VXR and get a GTT.

    So my dilema is -

Shall i sell the vxr and buy a GTT for circa 2k and get a mini cooper or similar for circa 6k?

the GTT would be a road legal track car stripped out etc... and the mini would be my daily driver!

Here here - I've got a 2003 cooper s overpriced tat, the salesmen know what they are doing. The missus just had to have one. Spend the same money on a civic Type R etc blah blah. You will be dissapointed with a cooper / cooper s.

Thought I’d bump this thread as I still haven’t decided!

My VXR is being used daily to get work but it’s only 3 miles a day round trip……seems a bit pointless spending so much money on a car to do 50 odd miles a week.

The only time I give it a good run is on a weekend occasionally.

I am also saving for my first house, which is another reason why I’m thinking of letting the VXR go! Although, I would really miss the car, I think a fast stripped out 5 which make me just as happy when I go on my weekend blasts / tracks days!

As for a daily a to b car, I’m not sure whether a 5 would be up for the job! and maybe I’d need get another car for that! Which is why I’m still un-decided!

    Decisions, decisions…………..

Second car for a 3 mile round trip?

Get yourself a good quality 5 and that'll be MORE than up to the job of a 3 mile round trip everyday & if you do break down you could dam near push it home 3 miles!

Second car's are alright but theyre a royal pain in the a$$ when you have to pay all the MOT TAX Insurance etc etc!!

Sell that VXR, get yourself a mean 5 with all the toys on & Robert will indeed be your fathers brother!!

    Fancy a VAG Clio?

"please Jay, come help me fit my intercooler to my VXR"

    YOU PUFF

We spent 45 minutes talking about your dilemma on the phone last night, you might as well of popped round for a cuppa.......

You know my thoughts, 5 all the way, the Money that car costs you is ridiculous. 5's are as cheap as chips, you wont get more of a car for bhp/£

    typical example:

VXR front mount £600 ish + remap / tune once done?
5 Front mount, take your pic!!! max £200 if you do your homework

    Your exhaust and map £1000.
My sidey, downpipe and a setup £250.

I know its all relative, you have airbags and air con, but I don't look at my 5 and think **** me that’s costing the same as a mortgage on a house...........

Get a 5, Sar has a Mini, if it breaks...............walk to work, you could roll there on a bike, we live on top of the only mountain in Dudley.

For me mate there is no doubt........especially if you want a house but still want your petrol head kicks.......

    Love You

Oh......Can you cut my hair the weekend?

can you cut my hair too lol naj J still aint been to do mine lol....

Dan get rid of the VXR it looks the part but the buzz off the 5 will give you a much bigger grin.

The Corsa will only go down in value the 5 wont lose money not now they are getting thin on the ground for good ones now. a 3 mile trip to work isnt anything to worry about.

I would get a 5 and still get a second car thats me though i dont like owning one car hahaha

**********But NOT a Mini, they are nice if you like a bit of c*ck, proper girls car, good luck from Dan**************

My personal opinion is fuel is the only problem with a 5, but a 3 mile trip is nothing so you dont really have any need to worry about a 5. you'll have so much more fun in your 5. just make sure you get one off a well respected member and you cant go wrong.

A 1.5 mile journey to work isn't going to be good for any car. It'll never get a chance to properly warm up. If I lived that close to work, I'd either cycle, or walk!

thats true, the coolant isn't up to temp by then, not to mention the oil temp!

9mpg thats while its being absolutely hammered.... my 5 with that T3 on was absolute ****e when you give that stick it used to get to the point i would be pissed off with driving it hard how sad is that?????. a standard 5 isnt that uneconomical.

my mates evo 6 would do 100 miles on £50 and that was being sensible.

as much as i like the look of the VXR's theres nothing better than bashing one in something old skool that goes for most modern hot hatches, i made one look stupid in my blue 5 last summer the guy was gutted and i did another in my williams when they first come out.

as much as people moan about French cars you cannot beat them, ive had a range of cars now and the one car i look forward to driving is the 5

if this lot doesnt convince you Dan i dont know what will. :-)

the fuel things not so much of an issue cause i don't do much miles!

i don't think the corsa vxr boys realise how fast the 5's are ! i got done by a metro up manor way in halesowen, we hit over a ton and i gave up (sair was shouting at me), the thing was rapid! but i gave him the thumbs up because no one would expect a car like that to have a fat turbo lump in it, but this did! i apprecaite these cars! bit like your mate in the green corsa c!

the vxr forum are going crazy about what i am saying! lol

yeah because they are all probably 19 years old and dont aooreciate anything tell them to pay for your car every month and you will keep it.. see how many replies you get.

That metro probably had one of them lotus engines in they are fitting the gti ones go pretty well standard but its still a Metrot i wouldnt really want one, sorry if i upset anyone btw.

but i bet he thought it was great wasting you.
And thats what you can do in a good 5 if need be, i know my brother raced a 400bhp evo in his 5 and the evo couldnt shake him the bloke was absolutely gutted :-) especially when he said the 5 was a 1.4 haha.

plus you get a lot of respect and compliments of people that used to own them which is always good i think

As Lamps said, you'll have everyone loving the 5, most people probably don't bat an eylid at the Corsa (no offence). I always get people giving a little nod and that... mostly old boys too

the corsa vxr in 20 years time will only be remembered as just another car just like the rest of the new cars

the gtt will always be remembered as one hell of a harcore hot hatch and respected by people who know cars, new cars may be better overall but no amount of money spent on them can make it have that coolness the gtt has

if you need an a to b as well as a R5
try a williams clio...nothing like the feel of that on a track or going sideways round a roundabout!
they are amazing in standard trim.

Ah, good to see all the old prejudices and myths are still going strong.

ive been using my 5 now everyday for the last 7 months
through the snow and generally rotten weather
about 4000miles worth and apart from occasional carb freeze(large fmic)
    its been trouble free
so much so that my gt tdi 130 has been sitting in the garage all this time
because ive been enjoying the 5 so much

its a 20 mile round trip to work and at 18psi its the dogs balls

you could buy a mint 5 for 2.5 a decent 172 for 3 and have money left over.

Lamps what power is your brothers 5 running as, my old gt was about 160bhp and felt rapid when i was 21, but my evo would have slaughted it.

when it went for its last rolling road session it had just over 200bhp, if i remember right it had 214bhp the guy who did it said its the best one he thinks hes ever had down there. and a really good torque figure the turbo on it is a bit of a strange one i had it specially made to suit the engine from a turbo specialist by me thats been doin it all his life really i paid 1550 just for the turbo and it really is amazing. i know its got a tial external wastegate and screamer pipe and a really funny looking rear housing.

the evo was a fairly early one i think but he had just had a later evo engine fitted and had spent a lot of money on it and had just had it mapped to 400bhp he was really pissed off that the 5 had managed to keep up.

im not just saying it because it was my car but it is the fastest one i have been in so far. im 25 years old and been in some really fast cars my mate has an evo tommi mak with 330 bhp and another friend has an RS4 the new one, and im not saying the 5 would beat them but i know it would push them up to 70 to 80 easily.

theres always something faster but it is a good one.

every one thats been in the car it has shocked them cheers mate

My missus works for Vauxhall so I have pretty much driven all of there decent cars, if you can call them that The only one that was any good in my opinion was the corsa vxr-r, but for £22 large you would hope it was. Dont like it inside though, dash is big enough to have a kip on. Sell the old vauxhall shed and buy a giant killing 5.

The lad that said Renaults are for girls and are ****e, just ask him what car if any have vauxhall made that are any good
