    urgent fuel related problem

I am in the process of getting my gtt ready for mot tomoz but am having a fueling problem. The fuel pump is sounding but no fuel getting to the fuel pump but if I remove the sender and put a pipe straight into the tank I get fuel. So my prob is obviously the sender so what and how dies it work and what do I need to do?
    Cheers James

check the gauze filter thing at the base isnt blocked. IIRC, fuel is sucked from the bottom of the sender, up the cylinder shape thing and out of the top. You must have a blockage somewhere between where the fuel is sucked in and where it exits at the top ?

    Re: urgent fuel related problem

Cheers for the help, I managed to get the 5 fueling and turned the key this morning (This is the 1st time started with a different engine thankfully it worked) after stealing the battery out of my Zafira GSI got the car started this morning @ 8am with a few tweeks to the carb idle screw. But have got a few electrical gremlins which I have been unable to fix due to lack of time this morning as I had to get to work, the electrical faults are rad fan not coming on, and the fuel pump ignition live not working (So had to use the fuel pump relay red and white wires to run the car).
Also need to sort the fog wirining aswell as I suppose if they are in and not working they will fail it.

MOT for today cancelled and booked in for this Sat AM, need to sort

    Rad fan,
    fuel pump ingition live wiring,
    Front fog light wiring,

    Any advice please welcome.

I don't think front fog lights are tested as part of the MOT - so you can leave that for another time.

Does the fan work if you bridge the two wires that go into the switch in the radiator? If it does then it may be your switch that's not working or the connections to the switch may need to be cleaned up.

If any lights are fitted then they have to work. So remove front fogs for Mot and concentrate on the other issues.

    Re: urgent fuel related problem

Going to have a play tonight, fogs will be removed (Unless I have time to spare to sort). Got some spare relays to try for the rad fan switch failing that I will bridge it to an ignition live with a fuse inline so when the car is on it runs (this way I can at least leave it with the MOT tester without worrying about over heating).

Must be a faulty relay as all them bits ran. Steal some from other places off the car and see what happens. Should be a simple fix.

I am thinking relay or rad fan switch as you say should be simple fix, I have loads of spare relays I can try

Bridge the 2 wires on the rad fan switch if the fan spins it's switch. If not check relay.

If you do look at the fog lights this might be useful....

Cheers boys and girls managed to get it all sorted well when i say all sorted I have had to run the rad fan of an ignition live for now as it needs more time to look at the wiring and it started to rain on me (at least it will do for a temporary solution).

    MOT aborted
Starter motor packed up (car started from a push) and so did the fuel pump about 5 mins later bridged fuel pump so it had a constant live feed and you could hear it go then it died also the horn stopped working also.

    Re: urgent fuel related problem

Well started repairing the faulty parts yesterday eve, I have replaced the following parts with brand new
    Horn, - halfrauds
Fuel Pump, - Local Motor factors,

the starter motor seems to work fine, I am assuming it must have got sticky or stuck when warm???

Now the drivers side window motor has stopped working, taken it off and had a look motor looks burnt out

I have also taken the rad fan of the ignition live switch for now as to much juice used to start the car so this is now on a fused switch in the car for now (Need a new engine loom to sort properly).

Still almost there MOT booked for this friday so got a few days to sort the rest.

Fit a 4 pin relay to the wiring that goes to the starter solenoid wire as per this article matey

    https://www.rtoc.org/boards/showthread.php?t=4724

My gtt/van had exactly the same problem even with a new starter, was fine when cold but didnt have enough power to initiate the solenoid when hot. Works a treat now

    Re: urgent fuel related problem

Have you tried connecting 12v straight to the fuel pump as it ran sweet and seems odd that it won't run for you. If it is busted I have another here that I tested and it's working fine. Check your filter in the tank aswell it may be ruined and dirt is going directly into the pump.

    Re: urgent fuel related problem

    Cheers for the info guys

I have got plenty of earths, i am of the same opinion can never have to many earths 3 coming of the gearbox and another 2 from the block and 1 from the head.

Printed the article section ref click click vroom looks like my job for tomorrow eve when I get back from work,

And it is weird the fuel pump because if I fit it direct to the battery it does seem to run OK but not a constant flow it's as though it has a break then starts again so just an intermetant fault, no need to send me another Mark got a new one know but cheers anyway. Filters are all clean as I have had the sender out and I have replaced the fuel filter with new.

What I could do with if anyone has is a drivers side window motor as mine is knakered.

5 pin relay will work fine if you can find out what pin does what. I just chopped the original wire before the connector of doom & ran a new wire to the starter solenoid from the relay
