Re: bringing my 5 back from the dead

ok i have a bit more to update but time has slowed up a little with new Matilda now here with us a few pics to show some bits that have been done i have also been to my local metal fabricator and bought some more materials so i can now make my air filter box and some brackets to hold more bits in place, holes now cut for pipe run in scuttle, will be back on my car as from next week doing evenings so i will hopefully get some more updates and be able to steam into working again

    jobs done

had to remove the turbo/exhaust manifold/exhaust heatshield/down pipe and carb top to get some extra jobs done to them with big jim bung fitted to e/manifold to read egt's, bung fitted to carb top to read charge temps, small mod done to my heatshield by myself to fit perfect, oil drain extended on turbo and another v-band added to my down pipe so i can adjust the angle it sits at, more work to be done with this though and finally all put back on and fitted
starter motor now connected up (cheers james)
top rad hose now cut and hard pipe added inc low temp thermostat
shocks now built and in place
    lower arms now in place
    new track rod ends on
    new bottom ball joints fitted
driveshafts back in to find a tiny split on a gaitor now to come back out
fan moved over on rad to give bottom rad hose more room and now connected up
holes cut out of scuttle for pipe run to c/cooler and new brackets made to hold in place
adj fuel pressure regulator now in scuttle and connected up with dial in situ
oil catch tank now fitted and connected up
    bottom rad hose re fitted
    new chrome boot struts fitted
    turbo oil drain connected
    new accelerator cable now fitted
heater matrix now turned round for modded pipe work so well out the way of down pipe
    new fan belt fitted

To be honest Phil you are so close to finishing, the problem with your build is that nothing is simple. There are alot of custom / non standard one of parts going on which is whats taking its time to make sure fitted correctly, if you had another full week of work it could be done easily. within that time. Then once it's running it still needs the carb setup and the VNT will need setting up to how you want it to run etc... Oh and more money to throw at it LOL

Just spent the last hour reading through this and looking at all the pictures,

What a project ! and the attention to detail is amazing.

Interested to see how the new airbox comes out now.

many thanks mate i have made the air box so it comes out in 2 sections the lid is held in at the back end by the inner and outer wing and is screwed in at the front end of the box and the large panel that will hold the filter in sits in 2 lengths of box section aluminium and can slide out once the lid is removed sounds more complicated than it is though mate

    cheers phil

Re: bringing my 5 back from the dead

ok bit more progress made this week but not alot of time spare at the mo with work and the new born but still trying to crack on with the olde girl

progress made heater matrix now turned round and connected up on inside of the car to allow perfect tight bends coming out the bulk head so loads of clearence from the down pipe

water system all complete now including moving the header tank and re routing some pipe work including heater matrix pipe work

charge cooler now all bolted down in position and half the pipe work connected up and complete just waiting for big jim to come round on monday to bend/weld some pipe work for me

bonnet re fitted to make sure it does not fail on the header tank, next job find a nice home for the charge cooler header tank and bosch bump but running out of a little room and the finally connect up pipes from pre rad to cooler with the idea of trying to hide the pipes between the inner and outer wing to keep it neat and to keep it running as cool as poss

will upload more when engine is almost finished

Phil, top work matey that chargecooler pipe run looks a right pain in the arse to sort out, am likeing the way you are sticking it in the bulkhead to give it some protection from the engine bay heat.

Phil, you could start it now once you have the coolant, oil and some fuel in and primed it all up, but with no exhaust she will be loud.
