    Break from the norm

New poster! (less than 10 posts)

Well its about time I did a project thread... so here goes

After owning a stupid amount of 16V, Hybrids and Williams thought it was time for a change.... I was due to purchase a tungy grey F7P 1.8 16V powered R5 but the sale fell through so the hunt continued. I spotted this White 5GTT on ebay, it had a good engine spec and looked clean in the pics, so I rang the guy up and agreed a price of £1200 and got a lift down to London the next day and drove it home to manchester. It was tiny bit ruff around the edges (what car i have isn't tho lol), but it had only done 75k and just had a full engine rebuild, a few niggles to fix but I was over happy with it.

    The spec
    New crank shaft
    New pistons and liners
    New big and small ends
New timing chain and timing chain tensioner
    Ported head
New valves, New valve stems and seals
    New group A head gasket
    New group A clutch
New uprated fuel pump and fuel filter
    Ngk spark plugs
K-tec distributor cap and rotor arm
    New TDC sensor
    K-tec ignition leads
    Baileys dump valve
    Some blue Samco hoses
    S/S Scorpion exhaust
    S/S Braided oil hoses

So first port of call was Partly stripping the interior & some pics... so quick phone call to jordan and......

    New bits

    Few random Winston touches

Then I tryed on my new rims... the stance and fit was bang on

Then it happend it let me down LOL.... I hit some traffic on the M6 just after junction 20a.... revs started to drop while sat in traffic... rev it abit... stalled... started... stalled.. start start start start.... get out and push.... then the starter did naff all... Ring AA- they failed

I treated it to some orange indicators for abit of retro-ness and as a get better soon present lol

I fitted a new starter and put new contectors on the fuel pump (thats the short verson lol)

So it was fixed and back on the road... best ring Jord for some pics lol

Having the FMIC fitted meant i was able to raise the boost to 1bar with no problems, so i finally got round to getting my Rob@BYR to Fit a bleed valve and tidy up my pipe work, getting it set up on his wide band on weekend to get it running spot on... 1bar ist gud jaa!!!

    Do not touch lol

While setting the bleed valve up i did this pulling up a kurb... Gutted TBH
Will have to be yeeehaa'd for now lol

Subframe.. semi clean and rust free

Front Williams hubs with good bearings... they need some more hammerite since they lived on the 5.

The difference in track.... doesn't really look like much in these pictures

The 5 top mounts to fit to the williams shocks... need blasting and painting

The bay has some rust that needs attending too

    Re: Break from the norm

The first problem i ran into was the 19 16v wishbones fouled on the subframe so some trimming was in order with the angle grinder and a file... Im now going to give the subframe a lick of paint

    Before

    After

The next problem was the inner ARB brackets need some modding to fit the 5 subframe... Its all fun and games lol

something I discovered when I was measuring up for a wide track conversion for someone:

the williams (or R19 16v) wishbones will put the hub off-center in the R5 arch. I forget exactly but the wheel will either sit forward or backward of its usual location, in addition to the extra track. It was asmuch as 30mm. enough to make it look odd and alter caster. it may also cause fouling issues with bigger wheels ?

it brings them forwards giving more caster. Since I had to cut the wings away to miss the tyres I mounted the arches further forwards to fit the wheels.

Cheers for the info guys... ive found out that the Williams and 19 16V wishbones give different castor depending on which you use... but ive put the wide tracking on hold for now.. I was forced to sell most of it...

Some of you may have been wondering why i was selling all my project parts i had collected to build the 5iams... After finding out my white 5 shell needed a new inner & sill, floor and other bits of rust sorting... I **** out

This 5 has been on ebay a few times... Ive wanted since i first laid my eyes on it & read the spec lol.... After getting a good deal on it with out the 1000cc engine.. It got dropped off at my house on saturday

    http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.d...ksid=p3907.m29

Plans... F1000 to F2000.. Ive still got plenty of goodies to add to it
