Millie's Clio 172 has all of a sudden decided to throw a sh1t fit & now won't start for some reason?!
If you apply a little throttle it will then start & run ok-ish (admittedly a little lumpy) but as soon as you take your foot off the throttle it just dies??
Any ideas gents?!
Currently sat on the drive with my Laptop doing a lot of this
tdc sensor or faulty fly by wire tb would be my first thoughts
Is it a phase 1 or 2 ? Could be tdc or ICV I think phase 2 is FBW throttle body which has the ICV built in

It's not got a fly by wire throttle as it's cable operated like the old GTT so i suppose i can rule that out
Secondly i just recently replaced the TDC sensor with the new kit from Renault & it's been running fine for a week or so, so i don't think it's that?
I just tried turning it over & the battery didn't have enough juice to turn the car over so i figure the battery was borked!Changed the battery & it's no better
Any more ideas you 172 dudes?!
Phase 1 ICV is on the plenium if it's cable pull the accelerator cable out like you would on the gtt and have it further and see if it idles my r5 does the same thing because no icv at the mo so i have idle adjusted by the cable for now
Is there enough fuel in there?
Yeah if i jam something in front of the throttle cam and open the throttle slightly it will start but idles at about 1100rpm?? What's changed???Originally Posted by James5

TDC fail would normally mean it wouldn't run at all, no warning lights?
Yeah if there's a TDC issue i agree it wouldn't run at all? No there's no warning lights on as far as i can see?
It will now run with a screwdriver pulling the throttle round a bit but i can't for the life of me think what's changed??

ICV failure by the sounds of it about £50 from Renault
Going back to TDC, was it one of the new ones where you have to cut the old plug off and then join on the new plug? Not saying anything but Might be worth checking the new join. The times mine has done something odd have been dodgy sensors and then you normally get warnings.
Is this the ICV valve? (see picture below)
Yeah it was one i had to cut the old plug off then make a new contact with the old wires. I'm pretty satisfied that the connection is good and have had a fiddle about with the plug & connection & can't see anything which looks a bit naff??
May be icv but might be O2 sensor on the back of the engine and also small amounts of crap in the TB can cause hovoc, what's the mpg been like?
Also fuel pumps go but you'd get a warning.
have you checked for a vacum leak?
No that's the TPS
Look down at the engine from the front you will see the coil pack to the right of this is the icv it has a pipe the goes back into the induction system
Could be anything best bet is to try an obd-II reader to see what error messages come up.
I have got one but it is currently out on loan at the mo when it comes back you are welcome to try it out

I noticed that there wasn't any hose clips on the hoses to & from the ICV? Should there be??
Is this ICV servicable?? IE a spray of WD40 & job's a goodun!
Yes you can try to clean it but just had a quick look on CS (all in the name of research of course) but they sometimes go again, £60 from Reno apparently.

OK, they're not serviceable, but might be able to go sticky, not seen a clio one to say for sure. If you have a multimeter check the resistance across the terminals. Try cleaning the internals with brake cleaner, they should move easily. Don't go poking and scratching stuff.

Well i've just given it a good talking to with a cotton bud and a dash of WD40 & re-fitted it back to the car & she's purring like a little pussy cat now!!!
Looks like i'll be off down to see Robbin Renault tomorrow for a new ICV unless anyone can suggest an alternative? Do GSF do Idle Control Valves??

if it's working now save your money, sounds like it was just gummed up.
If it was my car that's exactly what i'd do but as it's Millie's I know she'd have my guts for garters if it wouldn't start for her somewhere & she was stranded?!?
Mind you from what i can see of the offending item it's basically a little piston that moves up & down regulating the airflow & thus idle so as you say a little clear out & it may be right as ninepence?!

Cleaning it will be fine, all they do is just gum up with black crap and stick in one position..
Vectra's suffer terrible from it, i have cleaned load's of them out and never seen it come back with the same fault, plus i reakon you wont get much change from a 100 bucks at the stealers....

Thank you to everyone that helped with the guidance for Big Steve to fix my car, it's very much appreciated and just shows what a super club RTOC is!
It's not played up since so it's looking good!

the idle control valve can clog up . very easy to clean with a spray can of carb cleaner. also its worth cleaning the throttle plate with the above spray and a paint brush
a simple cheack to see if the idle valve is working ok is to let the engine idle dip the clutch and put it in gear slowly lift the clutch pedal to load the engine slightly once you feel the revs drop abit then push the clutch back down . you should get a high idle for about a second then it should settle back down to normal
