    fuel type

    just read this

What fuel is best to use?
The GT Turbo was designed for 97-99 RON leaded four star petrol in the UK. However, as leaded fuel wasn't present in all the places it's sold, it's probably safe to use unleaded without any significant damage to the valve seats occurring. The main problem is the octane (RON) rating. You should use 98RON Super Unleaded, 99RON Shell Optimax or 98RON leaded four star. If you're stuck, a fiver's worth of 95RON Premium Unleaded will get you to somewhere that sells Super or Optimax, but due to it's lower octane running Premium Unleaded will cause engine damage if used on boost for any length of time. Stay well away from Lead Replacement Petrol (LRP) - although it's octane rating is good, it contains lead substitutes that attack the turbo internals due to the high temperatures there.

im confused now, do i use 4 star or carry on using normal 97?

i thought unleaded in a car designed for 4 star leaded dint last long?

thng is i fill up at 4 diffrent stations, depended on were i am when im low and depended on what direction im going from my house. and one is so expencive for super i dont bother

so should i make the effort to go get super or will i make no diffrence?

thing is with the car eating 14/17mpg i dont realy earn enoth to keep feeding it super

Depends on the car IIRC GT Turbo's have hardened valve seats and so are ok to run unleaded. Mines been running unleaded for years. I normally go for higher octane stuff as I'm running slight ignition advance. I don't really know much about this sort of stuff so someone else will probably come along and give you a better answer.

    Re: fuel type

If you have a quick search back through previous threads, you'll see that it's perfectly fine to run c1j's on 95ron fuel.

Obviously the more boost/ignition timing you run, the higher the ron rating you may have to run.

^ where did this come from

either i'm reading it wrong or by turbo they mean engine which still wouldn't make sense to me ? Just for that reason i'd not pay too much attention to what it said

No, by turbo, they meant, errrm, TURBO! Saab (IIRC) tested that LRP crapola, and found it to "attack the turbo internals".

so any way back on topic, im better to spens the few more pennies and get super or should i fill up 4 star?. my local garage does 4star, but im worried the swap back to 4star will do more damage than good, and if they stop selling it then id have to go back to unleaded,

in a word, am i best with super or 4 star

Supposedly, as I've read on other threads, they do run better and smoother on leaded petrol, from peoples experience, so I would presume it won't cause any damage to your engine.. I'd be interested to try it, but nowhere near me sells 4 star

Christ o mighty walks among us.... just find a good bp and get ultimate.... it never let me down, optimax maybe but i seem to remember the word optimax and pinking.

You have not got much done to your engine CORRECT?

Stick 95 if you have to it wont kill it, i used to all the time when i was poor

My car didn't like using shell, but that was probably something completely different. Anyway I use tesco 99 now as its the nearest place that does 99ron and cheaper than shell which i don't want to use anymore

4 Star is a LOT more expensive than Super, as in about 50p per litre more expensive.

when i had the 205 xs (carbed 1.4) i found shell optimax used to cause it no end of problems, i blamed it all on the additives in the fuel but im not sure to this day. Used to get poor running and very low mpg.

And you can't spell so get over yourself.

I was thinking pre ignition, not post, so the unburnt crappola damages the exhaust side of the turbo, that makes sense.

I didn't kno where that was quoted from hence why I asked, no need to be rude

I run 20psi boost and I always put in Shell V-Power (RON98 equivalent in Holland and 100 in Germany) PLUS a splash of lead replacement (Shell Millenium). The beast seems to like it...
