Getting new car. What to go for??

Im thinking about getting a new car in month or so time just not sure what to go for originally I wanted a e36 m3 but insurance and running costs could get me in trouble I have a budget of around the 2-4k mark and fancy something non turbo but powerful. don't worry I wont be getting rid of the 5.

    Cars ive been looking into:
    m3
    Subreu wrx
    Cilo 172
    Golf gti
    corrdo vr6
etc. Your thoughts or advice would be good

The market must be on its ass if you can sniff out a decent M3 for 2-4 bags of sand!

You won't go far wrong with a 172.

And last time I looked, a WRX scooby had a turbo

You can pick up fairly descent m3 with high miles for that, and I know the scooby has a turbo just saying what Ive been looking at m5 looks cool may be a tad to old.

Gonna get shot down I know but ive got a Mk 4 Golf Gti and cant knock the thing I love the drive and build quality but we made one BIG mistake its non turbo. 3-4k will see a good turbo charged example and loads of tuning potential.

Yeah I quite like the mk4 Gti what bhp are the non turbos and turbod ones? I would like something with good build quality and reliable. Ive just been looking at leon cupra r's which I quite like.

115 or 125bhp cant remember for the n\a 2.0 8V which I have or 150bhp for the Turbo. Remap will see 200bhp straight away out of the turbo. No point mapping the n\a as its minimium gain. I like the Seats as well nice cars.

Id buy a williams clio, or failing that a nice valver, that leaves the ptions open to add a turbo as well.

Re: Getting new car. What to go for??

I was looking at spunking some cash on my 325i e30 bmw, fancied turbo charging it, after spending 2 grand on bits for it, a tuning company i was going to use has just told be its mainly a load of crap! damnit, they would fit it but said the turbo would fail and when it did the engine would go with it. Recommended changing the engine for a newer one, then supercharging it, starting from £6500........ hmmmm I think not.

I fancy a e36 m3 but just hate the look of them, 5 grand would get a nice one.
So now thinking of other cars i could get insted, I want it before june as going to watch the Le mans 24hr race and wanted to drive over.

A friend of mine has a Leon cupraR 225, its nice but doesnt do it for me, plus its wrong wheel drive, same as the golfs.

Another friend used to have a 172 clio that had afew things done to it, sounded really nice, but that didnt do it for me(wrong wheel drive)

He loved it tho, and could tangle with much more expensive machinery.

I used to own a mk1 mr2 with him, we spunked 700 quid on d2 coilovers, best handling car ive been in and wasnt slow either, kept up with an 07 civic type r, but bit old, and was getting rusty.

I loved my old e34 525i, the m5 version still goes for a fair wedge tho.

    I'm deffo thinking rwd.
subarus are nice but blow up alot, vr6's sound really nice, look good, but fwd,
golfs have great build quality and easy power upgrade.

I'd say the clio for you tho, very chuckable and in the spirit of the r5.

I'm going to keep thinking for something rwd for myself, pulling out wet junctions sideways is just too much fun to avoid!

for me it has to be a 172 all day....i have a ph1 and its the nuts for handling, good for mods aswell...get it decatted, remapped and matched inlets and your not far off 200bhp,and they dont cost alot to mod unless you either turbo it or go with itb's

Unless you've experienced The Interceptor (RIP) at first hand this may look like a bit of a lame choice of car but if I was looking for a cheap RWD car this would be my choice! LINK

31-33 mpg which i thinks is not bad for a 12 year 2.8 v6...but potter around town

New poster! (less than 10 posts)

I've got a 172 Cup which I use as a fire up and go weekend fun car, have also done some long distance drives in it which isn't too comfortable but OK as a one off.

Handles similarly to a 5, enough power to keep you interested and reasonably cheap to run. I live in the countryside and average 38-40mpg and I don't take it easy.

You can you pick up a minter for £4k.
