    My Clio Gtt

Well its taken a long time this conversion ....ill do a quick rundown(copy and pasted from other forums).

The engine i got off a member off here called winston ...i had a box full of pipes from another engine i picked up which had an overly skimmed head

The car is my first car had it for 3 years ive called betty ..originally a 1.2 -

My clio before i took it off the road -

So i took it off the road after FCS 08 for the conversion.

I got engine out ..was greeted with this-

As you can see ..pretty rusty ..it then got welded and patched up..new inner wing, treated and sprayed gloss black.

After that ..treated subframe ..painted it with a anti-rust paint -

    Engine on frame-

    Then engine into car -

This is my dash ...custom made by me for weight saving  -

Also all pipes on and intercooler pipes chopped to size -

    Another pic -

Also the water de-gass pipe has been straightened up since that pic.(thanks to rob@backyard for pointing this out )

The car runs now ...got it running during the week ..then reco came round for the initial startup ...it ran ...it misfired and cut out a few times ...followed by a few carb explosions.

I forgot to get the camera for the running vids

So after reco left i got some pics.

    Exhaust fitted-

And some random pics of the engine-

I then got the front bumper on ...and got the back back onto the wheels as the oils are all in the car now and all wires have been tidied away -

Intercooler will be pulled up more as the pipe going to the carb was off due to cleaning the carb in this pic-

Since then i went and got spark plugs from halfrauds ...opened the packet and it had 6 Spark plugs in it ... so my mate reco (who used to be a mechanic) measured them up ..made sure they didnt knock when turning the engine over by hand ....we went to start it up and it was coughing and puffing ... so yesterday i pulled all the spark plugs out and took them back to halfords and got my money back lol ...Got myself a set of plugs off a clio gtt owner who had a new set sitting for £5 So im currently waiting on them.

So thats a rundown of the project to today

    Re: My Clio Gtt

Well my spark plugs aint turned up yet

So got fed up waiting and re-arrange the bay. Was speaking to Rob@backyard on msn ..he said i best move the coolant bottle to behind the passenger headlight.

    Some pics -

Expansion tank temporarly(sp) strapped to the relay box

Resulting in this area being much tidier -

some overall pics of the bay(sorry for quality ...i was standing on my toolbox )

    Thats all for today

Looking good fella, lots of work gone into that

You might wanna put some damping springs on that exhaust thou, below the bracet that holds the downpipe to the middle section.
Also if it's coughing and spluttering, especially back throu the carb as you say, check the dizzy drive gear is lined up as it should be.

    Re: My Clio Gtt

Not done much since last update but fit a new distributor cap and arm ...got the car running a few days ago ..needs setup as per my post in technical chat.

I Wired up my guages today and all of them read fine. Test fitted them last week ...the temperature sender works and so does the oil pressure sender and my boost guage didnt work so i purchased a new one which is a different colour ..but ah well ..it works thats the main thing

    Heres a pic -

Quite good actually as the most important guages are the brightest

Thats all for now ..next update should be driving video's of it leaving my garage after 6months

Thanks for the comments folks ...the filter is far from the turbo ..just looks close in the pictures.

And as for sleeper style ...its a 5door clio ...ive got some 5gtt wheels going on as soon as i get tyres ...itll be pretty much a bumped and bashed lowered 5door silver clio ..so aye the sleeper look

    Re: My Clio Gtt

Well today it was raining ...but i had another day off ..so decided to get cracking with betty

First off i had to jack the car back up again ..and tighten/seal all the joins on the exhaust.

Secondly i had to sort the loud starter motor as it was grinding off the flywheel. was a coont as i had to get the starter heatshield off ...after a bit of swearing and cut arms i got it off lol.

    Sorted both of them

Then put some fuel in betty as she was empty.

Started her up ..and it sounded good ..soo good i took a few vids.

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Rv6PdGzqP1s

    and

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=67me5uepDvg

In one vid the car struggles ..its due to having a de-chocked carb so startup is rough.

All ive got to do is fit a new accelerator cable and tax it ...then get the carb set up and she's ready!

In that video the pipe isnt on the atcuator on the turbo, vac leak ? bad idle ?

Also id say it's still blowing around the exhaust manifold area, u can see puff's of smoke comming out that area too..

Good work thou chap, amazing what you can do in a tiny garage and wearing a bright orange jacket the skies your limit

Good going mate, keep us posted with progress..

    Re: My Clio Gtt

Just thought id update this project thread ..I have had the chairman(Miller) off here have a look at my engine. He sorted a few pipes that were in the wrong places also sorted my throttle cable ..CHEERS MAN!

He also dropped the idle speed down and played with the mixture screw. It now runs better. We then found a lovely knocking noise coming from the waterpump area..so i took the alt belt off and started it up ...noise disapeared then came back as i turned it off. Then i switched it back on again after that and the noise appeared agaimn. I have been reading on here and some of you have said its the timing chain tensioner..so i went all out and baught a new waterpump, timing chain and tensioner. Also good news for miller i went and baught a new thermstat as i wasnt running one before.

So today i went and fitted the new waterpump also fitted the thermostat ...it was a bitch of a job as my waterpump is very close to the suspension turret area. I managed to get the new pump on ...i connected all the hoses up ...with no water i went and started it up for a few secs ....i could hear a whining noise. What could this be? ...could it just be because the new pump is dry?

I also have a new timing chain and tensioner coming this week from cgb. Is this an easy job? ive never done it before..but would like to learn Rob@backyard said it was easy to me on msn ..but he's got a lot of experience with these engines

    remove the sump,
    crank pulley,
use a puller to remove the piece that the crank pulley sits against,
remove the timing cover to reveal -

    undo the cam pulley bolt,
remove the 2 bolts securing the tensioner in place and remove tensioner. (note that there is a retaining plate behind the tensioner),
now remove cam pulley and the chain will come off with it.

refit the new bits in reverse order. (ive always lubed up the chain and tensioner with camlube as its stickier)

make sure that the + on the crank pulley and the - on the cam pulley are facing/looking directly at each other.

hope that help you out a little

Yeah, as Raj has said, make sure the little plate behind the tensioner doesnt slip down into your sump when you pull the tensioner off

    Re: My Clio Gtt

Well i have this car MOT'd ...its faaaaaaar from finished ..i stupidly took it to french car show. Had loads of problems with it

MASSIVE oil leak! ... a total of 20ltrs oil went through and pissed out the engine over the weekend .
Tried sorting leak at the campsite as we seen it was the timing chain cover ... big thanks to the french members who came over to the car with gasket sealer

HT leads decided to break off as i was taking them off

Turbocharger decided to start smoking out the MOT station ..so we bypassed it and ran it N/A to get it to FCS and back ...purchased a standard t2 off Nick with the 5gtt convertable along with some spare ht leads ..thanks mate!

Its overfuelling like fook ...i went through 3tanks of fuel in the journey from glasgow to rockingham.

So as soon as possible its having its engine out ...gaskets purchased and the engines getting taken apart and new gaskets are going in

    Re: My Clio Gtt

I havent updated this for a long time ive noticed

Im going to be copy'n and pasting from the clio forum i own ..where ive added to a project thread ive made ..so some of it ..may not make sense lol.

Well weve decided to strip the car down and replace the gaskets ...so theres no leaks ...i decided to buy a carry out and got stuck in last nite  .

Well first off ..this is how she looked at the start -

    Bonnet and bumper off -

    Intercooler and light off -

Next was to remove the wiring loom -

What the wiring loom consists of -
    [

I then cracked my first beer -

Then off came half of the turbo as a bolt is f**ked on for the other half... i have taken pics of whats caused the damage ..its basically two clamps and 4bolts ...i snapped one of them previously and just stuck the 3bolts on ...meaning the turbo was draining oil through it ..resulting in a buggered turbo -

I then took all the fluids out and started taking off the pipes. ..here's a pic of it done -

Now heres the thing ...i payed my MOT station to weld the hole in the sump ..turns out he has just put a bolt in ...also the blue hose was pissing oil ..he just put two jubilee clips on which is what i was going to do -

As above you can see where he's just blanked an oil pressure sender with a bolt ...not good at all

    Here's a pic of it randomly -

And all the stuff i removed -

i eventually gave up at 11pm ...when starting at 7pm ..heres how i left it -

Next! ...we are taking the engine out to replace the gaskets which are pissing oil and putting my 1.2 gearbox on so i have a speedo. Im also trying to source the pipes for my t2 turbo as my current ones dont match B)

    Update ....in 2secs

    Re: My Clio Gtt

I suppose i better update the progress   This weekend reco managed to get use of a garage with ramps and power tools ...so i got the parts ordered and we towed my car down

Ofcourse i was working during the day ..so when i finished i got down to the garage to find reco's car sitting out the garage door for choonage! ...he had the engine off and his music playing all day -

I then walked into the garage to find reco had removed the engine already -

So i got to work with getting the sump, timing chain cover off-

    And them off -

The exhaust and inlet manifolds both came off for new gaskets but we didnt take a pic ...but heres a pic of reco putting them on -

While he did that i started swaping the mounts round on the gearbox from the gtt to the 1.2 box .

Heres them two lined up ...gtt box is on the right -

We then took pics of the engine with is new gaskets built up -

    Re: My Clio Gtt

We then put the gearbox on and starter...here's a few pics with engine ready to go back in -

I got a bit hyper and jumped in my engine bay  ....BOB POWA!! -

Anyways ...back to the serious stuff lol ...engine going back in -

    Engine in -

We then got the car in the air to bolt up the gearlinkage, exhaus, starter motor wiring and driveshafts back on it -

I then started piping up the fooker as i knew where it all went -

    Radiator in -

We then called it a nite at 11:30pm on the saturday nite.

Reco decided to take a pic of me absolutely manky -

Next day after i finished work ..we basically got it back on the wheels ...bonnet on and bumper back on ...we towed it back to my house and the fecker broke down being towed ...(starter motor wiring was shorting on the heatsheild).

Since that update on my forum ..ive fitted the T2 Turbo ...and intercooler ..so it looks like this -

    Inside -

    And outside -

Yes as you can see ive fitted bonnet pins to my bumper ...as ive noticed my bumpers been off more than my bonnet recently ...it aint a perfect fit ..but it stays on for the meantime

    Re: My Clio Gtt

    Thought id update this

Got my missfire/running problems sorted big thanks to Miller for sorting it

Fitted a cage and battery tray(a guy who builds autograss cars did this) -

Then a respray and white williams wheels ..respray had a major reaction ..resulted in patches and rough paintwork ..getting sorted soon ..after respray -

    Best pic -

Then some random FCS pics -

I then got it RR'd Down there -

    Vid here - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CRLWapgx0yI

    The graph -

Not bad eh! ..for a hybrid t2 turbo on standard boost,FMIC and straight through exhaust - 1bar boost next ..expecting 170bhp

My plans ...more boost, polybush it ..new arb waiting to go on and raise the back end up a bit ..it doesnt like hard cornering lol

    Comments welcome

    Re: My Clio Gtt

Just thought id give this a wee update

A few months ago ...somebody crashed into the back of my car ...he went round the corner with his car after ..so i didnt manage to get a reg.. he gave me a false number ..this is the damage -

I got quotes of £400 upwards to get this fixed ..so decided ..its going to be a track car ..road going one!

I took the car to work for a straight 8weeks ..only one breakdown ...alternator belt came off!

Then i started having trouble with my carb at work ...the throttle jammed at full revs ..resulting in a bent pushrod. So got it brought back by the AA.

This was way back in october ..i then went for my hernia operation ...so had plenty of time to plans stuff. And i got talking to Markey Mark on here ....he's selling his campus engine which i knew is a quick one...So ive went and put my name down on it!

So i got the car ready ..fitted the 16v bonnet again ..and took some pics of the old engine! -

So me and reco are making a trip to ayelsbury to markey marks for him to install his campus engine in my clio ..set it up with a brand new turbo.. I honestly cant wait ...as i hear its around the 220bhp mark

More updates after the new engine installed

    Re: My Clio Gtt

Forgot to update this thread ....been having fun with it

Well as some of you know ...i got markey marks gtt engine from his campus engine fitted to my clio by markey mark himself

We spent a weekend down at his ..towed the car down like this -

Anyways ....dropped the car off at marks on the friday nite ..so he could get started early sat morning.

We popped over at 10am on the sat morning..he already had my old engine out and the new one on the engine lift ..prepping it .. We then got breakfast and visited a clubclio members house for a while ..i then got a text from mark about 2pm saying it was 90% done lol ...so we popped over ...and it was fitted and all that was left was putting the intercooler etc on ...the man works fast!

Here's a few pics of the engine which was when it was nearly done -

As you can see ...i got the same turbo mark was using made up brand new -

    And a random shot -

We then got it up the road next day ..all that was left was an oil catch tank which i baught off mark ..and a bleed valve to turn the boost up ..as it was set at 15psi on the actuator rod.

So a big thanks to mark for that weekend

I then fitted the oil catch tank and the bleed valve -

At the moment i have it running at 18psi ..which im told is safe ..untill i get a wideband kit id say its about the 200bhp ..which is effing quick

Next plans - 2.5" exhaust system,Wideband and a bit more boost ..also some more weight stripping to the car

EDIT- Also got to say BIG thanks to Reco for driving all the way down to aylesbury from glasgow with me

    Re: My Clio Gtt

    quick update

2.5" exhaust system straight from turbo back done by simons exhausts in east kilbride

Also purchased wideband the AEM one. Got the bung welded in also ..so will be fitting that tomorrow. I have also found a crack on the bottom of the carb which is causing it to cut out. So im going to be sending it down to mark for him to swap the jets over to a non cracked carb

Then ill take the boost upto 20psi ..as im only running it at 16psi just now
