    Brake issues

    Hi guys, problem with my brakes car failed MOT due to not enough braking on the back wheels. Can’t understand why after car rebuild the car passed MOT first time and then passed the next year. Car has not been on the road from end of 2015 got the gearbox reconditioned and a new turbo fitted so I decided to get MOT on this year. At the time of the rebuild everything was new, new calipers, pipes, compensation valve. Anyone any ideas, all help would be appreciated.

    Check rear brake compensator valve is not sticking, might need freeing off with WD40 and pliers, also check brake caliper sliders are free and rear pads are not sticking, chances are could be one of both of these issues.

    The rear brakes are notorious for not providing effective braking. They do not like to be stood so best check everything is free as mentioned.

    A good run out sometimes does wonders pre MOT.

    Thanks guys for the reply’s, put new pads in copper greased the slides and checked the valve, its ok. Trying to drive as much as possible but with no MOT and tax scared of getting caught with the law.

    No worries, fresh brake fluid a good bleed and it should be fine.

    The rear brakes problem tends to be the pads retaining bracket. It's metal 'angle iron' shaped rod about 25mm or so in length, that slides into the rear of the pads to hold them into the carrier. It's held in by a small wire clip. It rusts and stops the pads moving. It needs to be manually moved side to side each year or few, and lubed, possibly removed, cleaned, lubed and refitted and then slid side to side.

    If that's what you meant by 'copper greased the slides', then yes, that might do it

    Another possibility is that the rear compensation valve might need opening a bit so as to let some more brake pressure through to the rears, buy adjusting it's threaded rod.

    A third possibility is that they are reading the weight of the car wrong from a wrong chart showing the car is heavier than it is.
