I use 5w40 fully synthetic Carlube Triple R and a bottle of greased lightning teflon treatment every oil change. Changed every 3000 miles.

I use controversial Castrol RS Formula 10w60. Will try 5w50 due to my new turbo (GT series).

    Re: What oil?

For M3s and M5s Castrol TWS 10w60 is "prescribed" for keeping double Vanos in good shape. Do not know difference between RS and TWS only that second one is almost double in price.

    Re: What oil?

Shell Helix Semi Syntectic 10 - 40 in my Renault 5 GT Turbos
Duckhams Hypergrade Semi Syntectic 10 - 40 in my RS Turbos
Castrol Edge Sport 10w - 60 in my RS Cosworths
They all have different characteristics. I have tried mixing them round but that combination keeps the engines quite and well maintained.

I use the cheapo comma semi synthetic 10/40. Its not so much the oil that's important its the regular changes.

    Re: What oil?

Miller CRS 10-60W was what I used to run in my silver C1J powered beastie

Think tbh regular oil changes and prob any half decent semi-synth would be fine

Guess it may depend a bit on spec of car / turbo to your choice also

    Re: What oil?

Oh dear god, not this one again! Comma aint the best for high temps or high rpms, it breaks down and ends up out of the exhaust (proved this at Motorscope rr day) I swapped to mobil super s 10/40 (Available from halfords on offer at the moment for 19 quid) and then ran the car at another rr day. Reved to 7800 rpm and maintained oil pressure and temp stability.

Tried all the rest from bad to worse:

    Mobil 1 fully-synth 0/40-far too thin for a 1950's sloppy toleranced engine/rattled my lump.
Miller CRS 10-60W- wrong grade/oil pressure was slightly higher tho.
comma semi synthetic 10/40.- good for general use, no good when thrashing it.
Shell Helix Semi Syntectic 10 - 40- difficult to get, expensive
5w40 fully synthetic Carlube Triple R- Carlube stuff is generally remanufactured oil, i wouldn't use it. (Scource opie oil rep) and local motorfactors.

Also used valvoline- that was good and smoothed the engine out 15/40 grade. only came in 4 litre tubs at the time so had no spare.

Im using halfrauds in tyhe 225 engine at the moment, only because its dribbling out the bottom. After that, im going mobil super s.

Was that because you spilt it everywhere while topping up?
