    Re: Starting/running issues...

Been having a real issue starting the raider in the morning/afternoon when damp over the last couple of months, turns over just will not fire up so battery and starter motor been taking abit of a pounding. Over the last couple of weeks once I have eventually got it to start after cranking it over, leaving it for abit then trying again its running abit rough and wont idle.

I have removed the idle jet and blown it through a few times, been keen to get it running for I can take it for a run and pop some fuel in just that dont wanna risk taking it out running rough.

Carb was re-built 2008, then set up again in 2010 so probably well overdue another rebuild, spark plugs are new B8EVX's I put in 2 months ago, need to get it sorted just really struggling with time at the moment with a couple of hours on a Sunday afternoon being the norm for getting to the 5.

    Any ideas guys?

Has the car been sitting a while? I think you are on the right track by looking at the carb. In the past I have serviced my carb every second year, no matter what mileage was done.
How do the plugs look now?
    gaps ok?
When it is running, can you see what fuel pressure you have?
    Whats the afr's doing?

I would check or change the dizzy cap and rotor arm, cheap from the club shop Take the idle jet out and stuck a straw in the side of the carb and spray a load of WD40 or carb cleaner in.

Sounds like it just needs a damn good run to be honest.

Yeah its been sitting a while, only get near it on a Sunday afternoon and this time of year it doesnt see the road. Need to check plugs, unsure on fuel pressure or AFR's. One of the HT leads was coming away from plug connector so that wont help matters, dizzy cap has the plastic shield thing fitted inside, could be time for a new TDC lead aswell.

    Re: Starting/running issues...

Right, made some time after work today to go back to the 5 to look into starting issue. I have checked dizzy cap and rotor arm, seem ok with hardly any condensation inside a tiny spot thats it. Centre contact for in dizzy for rotor arm along with all others ok, plastic cover around rotor arm is fitted too.

Removed all spark plugs (new EVX's they have been in a few months) slightly black/sooted so cleaned them all up and re-fitted. HT leads been on since 2008 decent Lucas ones however metal plug contacts within the plug glands has come away on 2 of the 4 leads. I kept the old ones I had before (which were fitted to my R11 turbo) and refitted these to the 5. Removed battery to put on charge overnight to try tomorrow to get it running once Ive blown the idle jet out with some carb cleaner/WD40. Just started to rain as I was finishing up lol lovely

Ordered a few bits from club shop too, dizzy cap, rotor arm, idle mixture jet, top carb seal, sump washers and a carb re-build kit so along with new ht leads and new tdc lead this will help getting the 5 running again.

    Re: Starting/running issues...

Found a little time on the 5 yesterday, re-fitted charged battery and no word of a lie first turn of the key it fired up and began to idle (was a very mild day for November). Then spluttered and stopped, re-started and it was running fine until... it got warm as I was about to take it for a spin to the Shell station for some fresh fuel. It started misfiring, then wouldnt re-start, popping/bagning from exhaust so pushed it back up the drive and parked it up.

Thinking this issue could still be the idle jet however also think these new parts are required, ordered new set of HT leads from CGB, also new TDC lead aswell.

    Re: Starting/running issues...

Cheeky day off today so made some time for the 5. Fitted new HT leads, removed idle jet and blew and put some brake cleaner through it. Then over the next few hours attempted to start it, turned over and nothing until on the last few attemps it spluttered for a few seconds and conked out. Finally is spluttered into life and began to idle, idle sounds irregular like it was misfiring slightly and tried to stall a few times as idle speed dropped, then it stalled.

It was warm, however went to re-start it and it went again so thought stuff it and drove it up the road to put some fresh fuel in. Seems ok ish, runs, does not conk out just seems like its holding back, doesnt boost quite how it did but at least I managed 15 miles in the 5 this afternoon!

TDC and other bits to fit when they turn up... Mr Dale Bigfoot .

    Re: Starting/running issues...

Had a couple of hours on the 5 yesterday, with it being rather mild it spluttered into life for 2 seconds then conked out before it got running properly. Then took another 6 attempts to start, got it running and when upto temp it started misfiring when revved. I was driving it up the drive at this stage contimplating taking it up the road. Then it conked out and would not idle, then would not re-start before finally backfiring so pushed it down the drive back to where it is parked. Im pretty sure this is a fuel issue relating to the carb, have swopped idle jets over, new plugs/leads.

Bit stuck now to tbh, not good at carbs so really need a hand at getting to the bottom of this.

    Re: Starting/running issues...

Little update, big thanks to Oli (Os8472) for popping over yesterday to give the raider a quick look over/check the fuelling etc. He found the an issue with the carb and the accelerator pump being seized solid, after freeing this up she ran! Carb does need a good clean up/rebuild and setting up as the fuelling is not where it should be. Feeling alot more motivated to make time and kick on getting it sorted for the summer.

Now just need to find someone who is a dab hand with sorting carbs...

Good to hear you got it running Karl. Seems the accelerator pump doesn't need long
    outside unused before it siezes

Is there going to be an EA Massive meet soon where we'll see the Raider?
I'm pondering another detailing day, but having supply issues from SG.

    Regards
    Steve

Yeah, reckon you are right Steve.

Its not seen the road since 27th November and certainly needs some love before the next MOT.

I will try to sort something out for when the weather is better, been a busy few months and the car side has been abit reglected unfortunately.

It's not that difficult Karl. There's a very good exploded diagram in the files
section here. You just need a clear work area, some carb cleaner and to
watch carefully for any spring-loaded bits. The diagram shows them clearly.

Re-assembly is straightforward too. The mixture screw is the main concern,
especially if you replace it. The biggest problem I've found is that the tiny
O ring can mask when the screw "bites" and consequently how many turns
    to take from that point.

    Regards,
    Steve

    Re: Starting/running issues...

Cheeky day off to give the raider some attention as been so busy recently. Got it in the garage to change oil and filter and to fix exhaust/bit of a checkover. Then it saw the road for the first time in 2016 for a quick 7 mile trip taking it easy on the boost until carb gets sorted as fuelling is all over the shop.

Just glad its driveable again just a shame couldnt give it a proper blat until later on.

Seems to 'run ok' loosely in the term. I know fuelling is defo out so will need attention.

Insurance renewel has just come through so now I know its driving ill renew and look to get it sorted from there.

    Another little update...

Big thanks to another old school RTOC member Handy for popping over late tonight to take a look at the car and removing/taking carb away for a once over and rebuild. .

Hopefully carb will be ready to go back on at the weekend, also renewed the insurance on the raider today, £166.00 for a years classic policy 1500 miles all mods declared.
