What does it take to get a 12 sec quarter mile 5 turb?

    First post!

Just bought a phase 1, and need a 12sec quarter mile. As I've got this mate with a 545bhp Astra gsi turbo which is silly fast. But over the quarter he struggles. He can manage a 12.9 that's it. So I told him I'm going to get something to woop him on the strip.

    Any help would be great.

Easy I've been trying for years. Granted I haven't the right tyres as yet but I will get there that's for sure. Takes time and money but it's achievable for sure

Yeah I did see the leader board. But doesn't really show you the full spec. I was thinking of selling this engine and sticking a c20let in it (if it will fit) as they get to 280bhp easy and reliable at that.

Getting the power down is the main problem, good set of tyres believe takes about 1 sec off compared to road going tyres. If keeping with the C1J really a T28 is needed, with a 285cam, get good intercooler setup, and about 22psi and if all running well you should see the 12 sec if you are a good driver as well as that makes a lot of difference, gear changes and changing gear so that the turbo is constantly spooling, so will have to rev the engine higher, 7k+. Making sure the engine is healthy and good oil pressure is definitely needed.

The list at the bottom of this article is a place to start: https://www.rtoc.org/boards/showthread.php?t=22002

Firmer springs, etc, as well so the car is not squatting and lifting.

250bhp with 230ft lbs and a stripped out interior, with the right tyres, could get you a low 12's.

You may need some spare engine blocks, gearboxes, etc.

You want also want to use NOS with lowered compression and with appropriate valve sizing. Stand alone engine management.

Done right, with about 500BHP the low 11's is the norm these days.

Renault do some 1.8 and 2 litre engines that seem popular for higher power drag racing with 5GTT's with some people in the mid and low 10's.

There's a 5 with an Audi TT lump in it with 280bhp I think. It was for sale a while back.

That should do the numbers easy.

Oh and you should be ok for boxes, as it runs the VAG box.

Make it light with 200+hp and slicks and you will see a high 12 all day long

Re: What does it take to get a 12 sec quarter mile 5 turb?

    Did someone say 12 seconds.........

From my personal experience you need all the right things to come together at the right time. It took me years but that was mainly down to lack of funds and time plus loosing motivation when it's broke.

Like many things, it's only easy once you have done it.

I did 12.7@ 109.88 mph even that wasn't without casualties, a liner let go on the run off at pod. It was and 80/100k o.e bottom end that had never been apart before. Upon inspection the lump must have been either stood or ran for a long time with incorrect antifreeze mixture as the liners were really heavily corroded on the outside when I removed them. I was certain the afr's were still good going over the line and I couldn't hear any det. I was stumped initially as to why.

My spec is in my profile. I tried different cam timing settings/low compression/o.e compression ignition timing alterations the lot. Many many engine casualties while setting up, some my fault some not.

You need a decent o.e or close compression engine, a 60trim T28, a 285 cam plus adjustable pulley, adequate fuel system alterations, a well set up carb, some drag slicks, a full 2.5" exhaust from the turbo back. Plus the ability to get high 1.8/ low 1.9 60fts then full throttle gear changes the whole way up the strip.

I'm certain there is more in mine with regards to the time as the 60ft wasn't all that good 1.92 I can do 1.85 even with my dog tired old slicks Even so 12 seconds might not be all that fast for the big boys but from a 1.4 8v ohv engine on a tiny budget with very little time it was no mean feat. I worked out the 0-60 on my p.b run and it came out at 4.1 seconds

Got to love C1J power. If you stick a non-renault (or non-period) lump in it, your mate will probably cry foul.
