Whip the head off next and removed the rockers and followers. Then take the timing cover off and remove the tensioner/chain and the cam sprocket (be careful when removing the tensioner - there's a spacer behind it that can fall into the sump!). The cam can then be removed by unscrewing the 2 bolts that are on the end of the retaining plate. The cam just pulls out.

The springs can be changed by a valve spring compressor.

The new adjustable pulley is a straight swap for the old one but will need setting up.

Ok thanks don't sound to bad, when taking the chain off do I have to mark any thing so it goes back in same position, also don't suppose you know best place to get a valve spring compressor from, thanks

My advice would be to replace the chain/tensioner for a new one while you're there (GT Spares/CGB). No you don't need to mark it. You can use the old sprocket to line it up then take it off and swap it for the vernier. The Haynes manual covers it pretty well.

I'm miles away unfortunately mate. An area rep might be able to help if needs be? To be honest you've done the hardest part in removing the engine. The only fiddly thing now is setting the vernier up.

    Have you read the article?

    https://www.rtoc.org/boards/showthread.php?t=4744

There is a step by step guide in there that allows you to leave the engine in, though I'm not suggesting that's the way you should choose to go on it.

There are some gems of advice on that page though on various things to do with cam changes/timing.

    Oh yeah, I see

Webber, let us know how you get on.

Some pics of cam removal in here:

With the followers (the little buckets that the cam lobes push up), I guess you are replacing them with new ones to go with the new cam. If not you'll need to mark up which one came out of which hole.

New valve springs are a must of course but I was talking about followers. If you are using the same followers then you need to put them back in the same positions.

Mind you, I'm not sure if it matters since the cam lobes will be new, lol. I don't know, maybe do it as belt and braces

I haven't got followers. Don't even know what they are, is it worth getting them then,as I'm unsure

Re: 285 cam, adjustable pully and valve springs

If you have a complete R5 GTT engine in front of you then you will certainly have followers. They are a critical part of the standard engine internals!

They are as already described. Little buckets that the cam lobes push upwards from underneath. The bottom end of the push-rods sit inside these buckets. The top end of the push-rods connect to the underside of rocker arms, the other end of the rocker arm connects to the top of the valve.

So as the cam moves round and a lobe comes up and hits the underside of the bucket (follower) it moves upwards, so the push-rod inside it moves upwards, which pushes the rocker arm up on that side, with the other side of the rocker arm pushing the valve down (open).

You can see how it works here. The only thing missing in this animation is the follower between the cam and rod

Re: 285 cam, adjustable pully and valve springs

The point being that these buckets wear individually, according to the cam and rods they've been working with. If you are removing and refitting the same cam then it's important to put the followers and rods back in their original positions.

However, you're putting a different cam in. Ideally with a new cam you'd get new followers but tbh, a lot of people just use the followers they've got. If you do this, just keep a note and put everything (followers and rods), back in its original position and just swap out the cam, valve springs and pulley for the new items and see how you get on.
