fuel pump issues - pressure ? misfires

hi all
just been looking at my car as its not been running right recently
i rebuilt the carb then took it off ,
and ive also changed the carb for a CGB rebuilt carb
when out the other day it was leaning out and misfiring - im guessing fuel cut!

i limped home quickly and started to strip it all to bits
ive tested the fuel pressure at the carb top by tee-ing inline
im not getting much pressure about 1psi if lucky
i also tried to tee off after filer still limited pressure and ive removed filter and gone straight off the pump , seems like itll make the gauge jump just off the 0
so im guessing about 1psi if that

ive dropped the pump off and its a bosch 0580464085

any idea if this is the correct pump? and what pressure it should be running ?

im sure i should be seeing 4psi at fuel bowl on idle , and +4 psi to boost (14psi = 18psi fuel)

the fuel fiilter is brand new and you can hear the pump buzzing (like an 044 pump does) but im wondering if its dead ?

any idea what pump i can fit as an alternative to try ??

or anything else to try ? going to go try link out fuel pump relay and see what happens before i loose the light.........

Hi Pete, that's the correct pump for it. You say you measuring it at the carb, what about after the pump as you still have the fuel regulator between these two which can be at fault. Normally when its making a loud sound it could be that its not getting enough fuel in the first place into the pump or like say its on its way out, or just a noisy one at that.

with engine off - straight off fuel pump before it enters the fuel lines at back of car beside tank



with engine running at idle
and ive bridged the white to the live on the fuel pump relay

its a good new gauge too
so im guessing pumps gone ?

where would the fpr be - i got a feeling i may not have one as its not apparent in engine bay by tracing the fuel line to top of carb ?

Tucked right at the back, difficult to see as its below the brake master cylinder

Good test. Is the pump getting the correct voltage? If so, looks like the pump is duff.

The FPR is hidden away and awkward to get to. It's down on the bulkhead (engine side), by the offside turret.





Top is pressure reference pipe that goes to the carb top, either side is feed to regulator (larger one), the smaller one goes to the carb float chamber and the bottom connection is a return to the tank.

what voltage should i be getting trev? 12v dc?

I'm not sure. I guess so.

My thinking is that maybe if the feed is duff or the earth is patchy, it could cause poor fuel pressure output. It's a long shot but worth checking before podding out for a new pump.

Have you checked the fuel sender in the tank it's got a glaze filter if its blocked it will stop fuel getting to your pump and read no pressure
To get to sender under the back seats just disconnect 3 pipes wiring pop the big circling out with big screw driver and twist the nut and lift out the sender,the bottom part of the sender with the filter will pop off so you can clean it.

Could go for a 0580464070 which is the phase 1 fuel pump which is a better one than the phase 2 version.

That's exactly the pump I got and found out that it's used on a Holden Commodore VL Turbo which runs a 3.0L Turbo Nissan RB30 engine! So a fair bit of redundancy I reckon?

Did you check/clean the earth and check the feed to see if it's getting the correct voltage?

one final point about the in tank sender you can find that the filter is clean but under it is a little pile of sand. That gets sucked onto the filter when going and drops off when the car stops.
Re the fuel pressure I recently fitted a fuel pressure gauge to Doris at idle it is low but as soon as boost is made it picks up to max 30psi. I checked this out on Scoffs rollers. So you need to do the same. A AFR meter can help with this too.

humm had another look at this as russell said there was a fair bit of crap in the lower well of the tank
ive cleaned this and had the fuel pump off the car again,
connected it to a battery and its spinning and with an end blocked off makes pressure
im going to head down the road of bench testing the pump and renewing the connections to it first
it may still be bad but im sure i seen 20psi on the gauge and it was leaking on a
T- fitting
there may still be hope!!

replaced the connector of death today ..........
i now have fuel pressure on idle of 5psi
also have a charging voltage at the battery of 13.4Vdc on idle (didnt know if i had this before )

the connector of death looks ok untill u opened it and found it full of green gunk and mud

im hoping this is a big step towards getting it running properly again
