    Smoke problem 🙈

Evening all I got another smoke problem. At first no smoke on idle driving or on boost, just when changing gear off throttle or after boost off throttle. Blue oily smoke. Breathing heavy in the engine bay (oily dust everywhere) was told to change the breather set up so done the cup mod, smoked even worst. Not sure if it was too far to be cured by this time. Now noticed oil coming out the joint from turbo rear-down pipe. Also was noticing there was oil in the breathers and oil in the cold side of the turbo. Clearly the turbos had it but what's caused it's my issue. I don't want to just replace turbo and have same issue. Next steps to check oil pressure. But Until I get round to it anyone have any ideas ?

    Thanks

    Re: Smoke problem

It could be a variety of things really; oil not changed often enough, wrong grade, contaminated oil, low oil/low oil pressure, crap turbo, too much boost or it could have just come to the end of the turbo's life in general.

Well worth checking the oil pressure.

    Alex has it about covered.

Maybe a turbo specialist could have a look at the turbo once you've removed it and see if it yields any clues. If he says the bearings/journals are all scored up for example, it could point to contamination. Then you'd know you at least need to flush the oil through a few times and maybe fit an in-line filter to the feed. Otherwise he might be able to tell if the turbo has been overspeeding, or whether it's simply age etc.

Take the inlet hose off the turbo and see if it has excessive play. It should have a little for oil clearance on the bearings but not wobble around. It may be worth doing a compression test or leak down on the cylinders, just to check if the rings are ok, as a worn turbo shouldn't cause it to breath heavily.

If it was rings, wouldn't it smoke at idle and/or on boost?
