F68 BHA - Is this car known to the club?

New poster! (less than 10 posts)

    Hi,

New member and looking to purchase a Phase 2 R5 GTT.

I'm going to view this car F68 BHA on the weekend

Wondered if anyone had knowledge of this car previously? Also, any specifics I should be looking for in terms of checks? I've seen a buying guide (http://www.renault5gtturbo.com/buying.htm) and will follow steps through that for the test.

Also, any ideas on price for this. It's advertised at £4250.

    Any advice appreciated!

    Thanks,

    Matt

Hi mate, is this a low mileage one? Something like 37,000 miles in Cambridgeshire area?

No worries thanks, just thought I'd check on the off chance it's known. I notice it hasn't got a rear parcel shelf - are they tough to source nowadays?

I'd think for that money you should be able to get something reasonable, but, you really need to know what you're looking for. Rust is a big enemy, and it can be hard to detect as it hides under all those plastic trims. It looks like the type of car that should be concourse, and if that's your thing you need to know if the details are right, as sorting all those bits and bobs can get expensive.

I don't know you, and maybe that kind of money is pin money and it's no biggie if you make a mistake. If that's a chunk of cash to you I'd suggest getting someone knowledgeable to look with you, even if you have to pay them (and I don't mean the AA).

This guy lives more in that direction, he may be able to suggest who can help.

Also try your local rep, no idea who that would be.

Id take a screw driver with me and have a really good look underneath it, prodding about. Especially around the jacking points. They tend to rot around those first. Also prod along the side of the sill under the cars. You cant really see the outer sill as its behind the side skirts. You can however look under the wheel arches, check around the bumper mounts as they go there.

Other areas for rust will be under the front window screen and back window.

In general, id expect the paint to be a bit faded unless its had a respray. So if it does need any bodywork doing to it, you`ll find it very hard to match the paint. Ive had to end up respraying the last 2 ones I had as I just couldnt match the paint.

Mechanically, normally a good chat with the owner reveals how well its been looked after. Is the owner an enthusiast and knows their stuff? If its a garage then your a bit stuck. Check the colour of the oil, check everything under the bonnet to make sure it`s all there and no silly mods been done. Look for oil leaks etc. Check the temperature the cars running at, make sure it goes as it should. Bits like brakes, ball joints, suspension, exhaust and such like are easy to replace and cheap so I wouldnt worry too much about them. I would factor in things like a new radiator, as for the cost it gives you peace of mind if its still running the old original radiator. Again, easy to replace and not expensive.

Personally, for that sort of money id be expecting a really nice sound car.

@rabbitstew - thanks for the guidance on that. I think that the car has had a respray as a lot of body restoration has apparently been done, so I'll check out the quality of the job from the colour match etc.

    Feedback from seller is:

"Outer sills replaced and any other rust that was found cut out and replaced with new sheet metal(not just covered up). New exhaust system. new suspension as previously mentioned. new brake lines. Turbo reconditioned 500 miles ago and oil return hose replaced. Head gasket replaced as a matter of course. new alternator. new battery. all new silicon coolant hoses (previous hoses were getting crusty). New heater matrix. two new tyres on the rear. Front tyres still have 5mm of thread."

@Pigsnake - I'm in Peterborough but am in Central London during the week. Will keep my eyes peeled for your motor when I'm around - looks v. nice!
