Parting ways with Pepe (Phase 2 5GTT)

    Meet Pepe.

Some of you might already be familiar with him. He’s the Phase 2 5GTT I bought a while ago for a rally I hope to do to Monte Carlo in June.

However, after much deliberation I have basically bottled doing it in a 5 with a standard engine, and opted for a B18ft for more reliability and oomph.

I feel bad for poor old Pepe as I would've loved to give him one last hurrah, but it’s not to be. And unfortunately I don’t have the time or money to work on both cars. Plus he’s taking up room in my dad’s yard which my old man’s not overly delighted with. Ideally I’d like Pepe to go to someone who could give him a new lease of life rather than a turnip like myself.

Here's a look at the little fella:
    https://www.rtoc.org/boards/album.php?albumid=1882

    Things that need looking at

    - Bumper mounts have rotted out so needs an hour or two welding. Have the bumper, side mounts and brackets
    - Has a grill with it but not the standard 5GTT grill (didn't come with it)

    - No GT Turbo rear badge (didn't come with it)
    - Driver's door dented/rusted down front edge
    - No Tax or MOT
    - Brakes need bleeding
    - Sod all paperwork other than invoices/receipts for recent work completed and V5 form
    - Passenger seat looks as if it’s had a run in with a Rottweiler
    - Pepe’s been a bit of a slag with 9 owners
    - Could do with a respray as currently looking like Jason’s Technicoloured Dreamcoat

    Pepe’s strong points

    - All sills, arches, windscreen and boot recently welded and primed – shell’s in great nick.
    - Two new front wings
    - HPI checked
    - 80k on the clock
    - Original spec engine except for a new dump valve and air filter

    - New master cylinder
    - Dashboard is all good – no gauges and whatnot cut into it
    - Comes with bumper, grill (not original), side trim and strut brace that need attaching

So there he is, warts and all. Sounds like a lot to do, but it’s not far off being a good little 5 again if you know what you’re doing. Which I don’t, unfortunately, ha. Looking for £750 folks.

Yeah, the very same unfortunately. I've bought another one with a b18ft in it as will be doing a lot mileage over the week of the rally and wanted something uber-reliable rather than the temperamental standard engine. Feel a bit gutted and as if I've taken the easy option out - which, to be honest, I have - but have to let my brain overrule my heart on this one. So yes, Pepe, is for sale and will hopefully make a great car for someone who'll take care of him.

A b15ft. Do you mean b18ft or this something I haven't heard of?

Pah ha ha, my bad - yeah, that's a typo, not an engine I've conjured up myself.

Oh wicked more ft'ers I'd like to say they're care free but both mine and Paul's have been major work so far.

    And mine

Not much between a b18 and a c1j in terms of reliability

I would class the c1j as the more reliable lump from reading a few threads on here

I have no issues with the b18 it's the electrics I need to get right lack of dosh doesn't help the issues.. When it did run it certainly was better than the c1j in my opinion.. Mega squirt needed I think but not willing to sell my ass for it..

A five with any engine in it can be a headache. Lol thats the beauty of classic cars just when you get everything running right, something gets broken or loosr or melts...worth all the headache though. Still put a smile on your and anyone who sees it.

Ahhhhhh, don't tell me I've made a cock-up going for the Volvo instead of the standard engine, haha.

if its reliability your after then a 5 with a clio 172 or 182 engine would be ideal. right amount of power no turbo lag no costly maintaining costs.

Timing belt and dephaser pulley on a 172/182 lump is £400 all day long they are slow in a gtt as standard.

It's not about which engine imo, it's knowing how to put it all together in the first place, knowing which bits could fail (worn/used parts), noticing what's wrong before it gets worse and ruins something else and always do it properly. Nothing worse than a get you home bodge that's been done in the rain and just waiting for it to fail again.
