    flywheel modification

any one ever had a flywheel adapted to a different trigger pattern? if so what was the cost and who did you use. id like to have a gordini flywheel adapted so i can use it with an after market ecu. will probably get it lightened at the same time, cheers

Some ECUs support a variety of trigger wheel patterns, including Renix 4-2-2. Not sure what the Gordini is. What ECU are you going for?

    Re: flywheel modification

I tend to stick with omex for a few reasons. They have said if there was enough interest they would look into supporting the old Renault pattern but im not sure it would be viable, cost based on sales. Would be good if they could though. On the dini it doesnt have space like the gtt to mount a pickup wheel so my other thought was to have a stock flywheel machined and fitted with a different trigger pattern

Flywheel modified to work with standard R5 GTT timing sensor linked to Adaptronic ECU.

    Re: flywheel modification

Is the mounting pattern the same as the GTT?
Is the outside diameter the same as the GTT?

If yes to both of these you could your the flywheel from the 1.6 8v as its a 60-1.

Or you could make both of the double tooth, two singles and add an extra one then code the ecu as required.

no its alot smaller than the gtt, would it be a 43-1 if i did the mods?

    Re: flywheel modification

Can you not machine off the timing teeth and have 36 holes drilled in the flywheel, missing the one at 90deg for a ford pattern? Omex supports 36-1??

    Re: flywheel modification

You could try megasquirt as there's loads of different options for trigger pattern also you can enter the number of teeth with how many missing at what degree with a falling edge or not etc... The possibilities are endless

indeed it does, that sounds like an idea. talk to me about positioning of the gap?

Ford tdc sensor mounted in a fabricated block, I did this mod to a rover tomcat 220 turbo race car using a cam sensor for the motec ecu.

This was a rough setup to get the running distance of the sensor, when it was set correctly with the 'nut/bolt', I spun a spacer up in the lathe to the right distance.

Already got a ford pickup and bracket. Was wondering where the missing tooth would go with ref to tdc?

I didn't think you could get a proper sized 36-1 trigger wheel in there on a gorblimey?

what do you mean? im looking at your suggestion of machining the teeth off then re drilling or cutting it to a 36-1

Ah, I see sorry... I thought you were going to mount a trigger wheel on a pulley or something.
Does your omex allow you to swing timing...? As in trim it to any angle?

    Re: flywheel modification

nope, no space to do that. unsure if it does but i can find out. its all just getting a collection of parts that will allow me to do an efi conversion at the mo. oh and information and ideas, hopefully with the higher compression and crossflow head it should breath quite well

    Re: flywheel modification

Is there no way of using a gtt/campus timing case and modifying a campus pulley to run a trigger wheel at the timing end? I can't remember how tight it is against the tunnel/scuttle on those things

    Re: flywheel modification

Very tight, and doing that id have to add an engine pull to the build. The flywheel is a spare, and the box has to come off for a better clutch so perfect to do a flywheel swap at the same time

Maybe machine the teeth off and then get a ring gear type tooth wheel fitted to the flywheel?

It's a Clio flywheel, long tooth chopped to match the others, first two pictures are poor as not taken by me. But if you look closely your see what's been done, last pic is of it now its been finished and skimmed.

    Re: flywheel modification

make a trigger wheel, and put it on the end of the cam - the bit that sticks out of the block. - it turns 1/2 speed of crank, but should still work.

    Re: flywheel modification

It will have to be a 71-2 on a cam wheel, no real biggie, as you can use an old rx7 pickup to run that.

    Re: flywheel modification

I'm currently using a modified clio flywheel where I cut a tooth out, but I do still have my l/b c1j flywheel sat on my bench wondering if I really should be getting that back in after removing 1 of the 2 filled in teeth and welding another one in on the other side. The theory is right, it's just if you can weld teeth onto a flywheel? That's the question. If I where at your stage now, I'd be looking to see if there is anyone that can weld teeth into a flywheel.

Get it balanced and set up once done.

    Re: flywheel modification

is the tdc mark on the gtt flywheel the machined line? i have the same on my flywheel and want to get the new trigger machined as close as possible to the correct 90 deg btdc, the ecu allows for it to be anywhere but would like it closer to correct for easier setup

    Re: flywheel modification

a little update on this one, with help i spent some time getting the ecu side of things sorted but got it working for a 44-1 tooth pattern, so i should be able to modify the stock fly wheel to this pattern, i think it was make the 2 double teeth individual teeth and add one tooth to one of the gaps

    Re: flywheel modification

im a bit weary of welding it myself. i will dremel out the double teeth to singles but ill get it welded and the extra tooth added by a company that can balance it afterwards. not sure if it would really throw it out much but id rather fit and forget

just an update for the thread if anyone looks, this is what i have ended up with. a 44-1 trigger flywheel. this if works can also be done to the gtt wheel if anyone wants it done
