Is nice. Phase 2 interior will de value it though

Love leccy blue phase 1's, it would still cost a lot to restore fully, but maybe not as much as some, a really honest advert and it must be a pisser for Jim, hope it gets a genuine buyer who will do it the justice it deserves.

I'm seriously tempted to get back on the GT Turbo seen with this! It's just a shame it's so far away from me. I wonder if it would take a 250 mile journey back??

Out of interest, where could you even get phase 1 seats now a days and how much would they cost?

Rob, other than when Mike or CGB has them in, it's impossible to answer either of those questions.

I thought something like that may be the case, I have not seen them for sale anywhere for a while. Still patience is a virtue...

Yep, it's just a matter of keeping an eye out everywhere. Who knows what the next seller maybe asking in terms of price though.

Looks sweet, i feel like getting rid of my tungy for a nice ph1.

£300 for seats is cheap compared to some cars lol. I would personally pay that amount to finish off a restore.

Is anyone on here bidding for this? Please pm me if you are because if your max price is higher than mine, I do not want to force you to pay more than you need too. Vice versa of course.

Are people really holding on to these because they think one day they will be worth a lot more?Never going to happen.Even the parts that people are sat on will go to waste.

I think they will go up a bit yet.

When the economy gets back on its feet then they will plateau. People are looking to invest in something as the banks are giving peanuts. People see cars and some commodoties as money makers.

    And a turbo 2 is a little different to a 5gtt.

As for parts, look at gearknobs. I bought one from Renault for £11 - Look what they go for now! Several have sold for well over ten times that!

When you add in any kind of inflation factor, you'll realise a few things about whether prices for second hand GTTs are truly going up or down.

Cars are relatively cheaper to buy than they were. They are also built to a higher standard and the specification is in another world in comparison.

What a GTT would have cost you new in 1988 will now bag you this BWM 114i SE, brand new (not that you would have one of these over a GTT of course). This is the affect over just 25yrs:

At the time though the gtt was top of the line, that BMW isn't? Or am I getting the wrong end of the stick?

Re: nice looking phase 1 on ebay

Yeah, I didn't explain very well that I was making two different points.

    1. Inflationary affects on money mean that the exact same GTT on the market at £3000 8yrs ago (for example), is now better value for money if it is sold at that same price today. That is to say, if the price of second hand GTT's does not go up by more than the cost of inflation each year, then they are effectively becoming cheaper to buy.

    2. Cars have become better value for money in general terms. Look at the construction quality, safety and equipment specification you can purchase now for the exact same monetary outlay, in comparison to 1988. (hence the BMW pic).

The comparison of top of the line in 1988 vs top of the line in 2013 is difficult to measure precisely due the affects of point 2. It wouldn't be a like for like comparison.

    Lol.

I'm saying that the value of complete GTTs is unlikely to increase significantly above inflation (so agreeing with you that it's not worth sitting on them for years, trying to realise a profit).

I'm also saying however that the value of parts (that are no longer manufactured), may possibly increase significantly above inflation in some cases (as shown by Bill). So disagreeing with you on that score.

Edit - of course some of this depends on just how sought and 'cult classic' the GTT becomes (and at the point where demand exceeds supply).

Re: nice looking phase 1 on ebay

The prices haven't gone mad for all parts. It depends on various things.

    Supply:
    - is the part still being manufactured
    - is the part still available from Renault
    - is the part still available from resellers
    - is the part available as a pattern or after-market part
    - is the part readily available second hand

    Demand:
    - is the OE part in high demand
    - what is the market's perception of the quality of the pattern/after-market part variants

So there are a lot of parts that will be comparatively cheaper to replace now than they were 10 years ago because they are still widely available and the value of them has not outstripped inflation over time.

On the other side of the coin, IIRC, a clutch for a Turbo 2 is a real problem and prices are variably high. Whilst demand for these is not great, supply is still at a premium. That said, it would be interesting to see what the cost was for a T2 clutch in the late 80's, find one on the market now and see just how much more expensive it is when adjusted for inflation.

Good god, I look for an electric blue phase 1 for 2 years and then have a week off from forums, ebay, etc, and look what pops up. I've got my eye on a very nice Mk1 Golf GTI too. Thats another itch that needs scratching
