    Engine swap R5 turbo???

    Hey guys,
    Its finally time to start thinking about what to do with my engine after the turbo had a mid life crisis on me and blew up
    What would most of you recommend for quick power??? i was thinking of a clio 182 lump but not sure how easy the transplant is etc?
    Also do alot of people like to keep R5 turbos with there pushrod engines to make them worth more in later life or would people prefer reliable power? I personnaly would prefer reliable power but im also a R5 enthusiast so can appritiate its frowned upon, so just after general feedback and what engine bolts in fairly easy as i want it up and running for retro rides in august.

    1*2 engine is good but needs everything from donor car, also needs a different bonnet. I have the 1.8 16v engine, very reliable, good power, great sound (due to the Yamaha R1 carb conversion).... Easy swap.....

    I personally want a c1j, purely cos I would like to return to original at some point.... If your interested in a engine bay swap let me know haha... Or of you want to sell your stuff pm me

    Hi penfold,
    what sort of power is it running? It would be something im interested in, have you got any pics, also was it a fairly easy conversation.

    I take it doing the 182 conversion the engine sits higher thats why you need a different bonnet?

    Yeh plenty of people have done engine swaps, loads more info if you do a search , my thread is on the project section of the boards, some pics of my engine there (sorry on my phone ATM and can't post the link up)..

    I considered a swap but the simplicity of the old pushrod c1j got the better of me.

    i do agree mate but need more reliable power and dont like the feeling off im always watching the temp gauge, i know thats part of the fun of owning a R5 but i want to do some euro trips in it.

    172/182 standard lump will be pretty boring mate, i wouldn't consider it unless your going to turbo it. Think of the extra weight up front.

    Volvo turbo would be a better option & probably cheaper?

    C1j can be reliable as if built properly though, dont forget that

    How hard is the volvo turbo conversion to do? what volvo lump do people tend to go for?

    Estimate around 160bhp, needs abit of a tweak on a rolling road, could see high 160's, with a decent cam, tweaking 180bhp+ is achievable...

    Nope I will do my best to get it to the illusive 200

    I was looking to read up and the links very interesting I haven't seen anyone talking about the Volvo for a while (or I wasn't looking) but that's the way I'm headed. Our 2nd child is due in November so I will need a build to take up any spare time I have.. If any..

    For what it's worth.

    The C1J is as reliable as you make it - I have just done the 1200 Sangliers trip - no issues, majority of time between 80-90mph and it felt absolutely fantastic.

    I have 200 bhp when wound up, but find 180 great for most occassion and I can easily get upto 100 in no time, much after that and I'm ****ting it just in case the rozzers are about. Sure, top end will be weak against the 300+bhp F lump brigade, but that will only start to show up 90mph+.

    The reasons I won't change are:-

    My C1j is cheap to repair should you need to.
    My C1J is ludicrously fast upto 100mph.
    I love fact that it is 1.4 and it goes like it does.
    I love the noise it makes when on full blat.
    Insurance is cheap.
    Tax is cheap.
    it is cheap.
    It's as Renault intended. kind of.
    I see 35-40mpg.


    Reasons I might change to F lump:-

    I hate the tappety noise my cam makes and the thought of a lovely set of cams and no push rods is tempting.
    I know that at 250bhp it will be an animal and will not give me any gyp.
    It's a very exciting development which will have many years to run.
    If I want to go 150+mph - I'll need one of these.

    Reasons I won't go F-Lump

    Cost in all areas
    Too much engine braking for my liking.
    It would (for me) take the soul of the 5 away.
    the need to do an expensive gearbox upgrade once you start getting the bhp up to silly levels, this falls into my 1st point really.

    The C1j is a great engine, and when built and tuned right, it really is a force to be reckoned with which is reliable and won't let you down, even when stretched.

    But I can see why other have gone the bigger route.

    Totally agree with this, mine made the trip to Sangliers also but non EFI, didn't miss a beat.

    Feel the C1J is the soul of the 5

    I can only accept non gt turbo's having engine conversions, gtt should always have the c1j imo.

    totally agree with rob and mick etc etc, c1j all the way, I drove mine nearly 2000miles on the French sangliers trip too and she hadn't been out of the garage for a year and half......, when I efi`d the other car.... I had to keep the c1j....
