    Renault 8.......

So not much to say just yet but today i went and collected my renault 8 from hull, 200 miles away. A 1963 956cc example that has been in stuck in a garage 20 years. the car had to be moved out of the garage (door hadn't been opened in the same time) on a jack, then the front wheels removed to take the calipers off the disks as they were so badly rusted the wheels wouldn't move. The drive home wasn't to bad bar a blow out on the 8 that was strapped to the trailer lol. Any way ill start up dating this as i slowly work on her. Im not going to worry about the body work to start with just the underside mechanics and electrics and the plan is to get it through an mot.

even got the lights to glow a little

Brilliant project, I love the R8's. I suspect the parts are going to be mighty hard to find but perhaps that'll be part of the fun!

    Re: Renault 8.......

Cheers guys, some parts are easily found, well rebuild kits for all the brakes and mechanical parts. Trim and panels are harder and being an early model some bits are non existent. It's subtly different to the later gen ones, it's basically the first edition of the 8 registered in 1963 so could possibly be a 1962 produced car, the first ones. Ill need to do some digging around for more info though

    Good work adey

I looked at that one myself on the classic renault forum a few weeks ago (hence why I suspected you'd be in hull).

Looks a great basis for a project and looks to be quite solid. Deffinately got to agree with you keeping the factory colour, every 8 you see is burgundy or blue so it makes a nice change.

What's the plans for forward momentum? Gordini turbo perhaps?

Ill be checking this thred regularly.

    Congrats again

    Ross

lol gearbox's are a weak point, mine is so early it has no syncro in first! i know of a guy with a gordini r8 and a dauphine in his work shop (old renault dealership i think) he has 2 atmo gordini engines sat doing nothing, that could be tempting though he doesn't like parting with anything. A friend of mine has an 8 that he got from him and that took some persuading. Time will tell though, id be ecstatic if i can breath some life in the engine that's in there. Hasn't ran since 91-92

A fair bit on the bodywork but that's all replaceable. Both front jacking points need doing and the passenger side front sill is very thin. To be honest it's not much for a 50 year old car, a lot less than I thought it would have, I might find more when I unbolt all the wings but that's all that will be needed to get it through an mot

    Re: Renault 8.......

well ive had a quote for the welding to the sill and inner wheel arch, price is good and the chap has a good reputation within the classic car lads locally. Just need to sort another pair of axle stands and ill have the rear off the ground and i can remove the brakes back there.

had an interesting post put up on another forum that excited me a little, a quote from tonytopiss the RCCC secretary

"Hi - well done with your purchase - nice to see it 'in the open' rather than in the garage. This may be the earliest one in existence"

A lot of folks over there offering good advice and they even have a designated guy that will order bits up from holland for you.

The brake caliper refurb kits are still available as are things like hoses. The rad will probably need to re-cored though it doesnt look bad but being a renault i best make sure the cooling is all top notch lol.

Once shes off the ground ill be taking all the interior and flooring out to check the inside out, it will get a clean and rub back then ill probably cover it all in stone chip protector paint and relay all the rubber flooring

calipers in the process of being stripped and im very surprised at how good of a condition they are in, no scoring or pitting on the pistons and the calipers are very clean for there age. going to an alpine specialist thats not to far from me tomorrow that stocks most of the brake parts i need

    Re: Renault 8.......

Started off today meeting Jason, the guy who's taking on the welding and fabrication on the 8. was a nice morning so the car got moved to its new resting position and leveled up on axle stands. Jason had a look around the car and suggested we have a proper look around and fix everything we can rather than have to revisit it at a later date. I was probably a little naive in think he could just come and weld up what was needed as with all old cars the more you look the more you find. I took the plunge and arranged a deal with Jason and decided to tackle the whole lot to make a it a solid chassis that will hopefully see another 50 years of life. Plan of action was to tackle the car a side at a time. To do a proper job wings doors and interior needed to be removed so that was the job of today. Unfortunately bad weather put a stop to play but the car is ready to have the passenger side rot cut out and replaced. A Frame will be welded into the car to help it keep its shape during this.

    doors off

and how she stood before cleaning up

Next on the hunt is a replacement panels, now i can get fiberglass ones with ease but i think im going to try and get originals in good condition for the rebuild, just seems like itll be more original in the long run. On his next visit Jason thinks he should have all the rot out and replaced ready to make a start on the drivers side. Going to be a long process but defo worth it in the end

you can get direct replacement fiberglass panels, looking at about 150-200 per panel. the rear one will probably be fiberglass as its hard to find. Meca parts sell them all. ive not been able to find pictures or places to buy the wider arch panels yet

Anyone fancy taking on a project? Don't really want to go into details on here but I to have to loose the 8. Car is as is in the last pics but everything is there bar the lower dash panel and a bonnet catch. Lots of odds and sods with it too, pair of sills(rarer than hens teeth) new rear light, original rear brake pads and service kits, few other bits and bobs there too. This car has to be saved though.

A little gutted to be honest
