    new fan/drive belt noise diagnoses

    Hi all,
I replaced my drive belt as the edges were fraying.
Purchased from car spares giving reg year etc
Prior to this I had no noise but now my car sounds like its electric.

Several people have agreed its not too tight or loose and
Ive also adjusted the alternator but no difference.

Just weird that there was no noise before.

    ****ty or new belt cause?

Yeah the small bracket is in place, nothing i can see is touching it..
I did notice that i was unable to bolt it back up near where it was previously, maybe the older belt was slightly longer or stretched..
Ive tried really tight with virtually no play/twist in the belt & loose enough that the alternator is as close as it can be.
    Still the same.

Ill try put the original belt back on to see.

Id guess as saying it sounds like its coming from water-pump more than alt,
But dont understand why the bearings would go all of a sudden.

Put a piece of pipe in your ear or if you have a stethoscope use that and put it on the waterpump, alternator anything round that area and that should help pin point the noise.

Used a screw driver and listened to the vibrations but doesn't sound like what I'm hearing.

I have had a few alt belts do this, for me it was always the alt bearing that was making the noise, especially with a new belt, it quieted off after a few miles but returned after i re-tensioned the belt and again went away with use.

I don't actually mind the noise, it's just my concern I'm doing damage.
I'll try the old belt and see if It still happens.

Re: new fan/drive belt noise diagnoses

Just put my old belt back on, pushed the alternator back to where it was originally and its fine, no noise running at all..

Holding these 2 belts together, the new one is defo smaller, maybe an inch or so but the same width..

With the new belt on at the slackest it can go, its whirring.

Is it because it's new and needs breaking in?
Is it the difference size teeth?

I was wondering whether it was worth holding out until it was worked in,
My brother explained that all 3 pulleys have different gaps,
I think it was the water pump pulley that was slightly different and making all the racket.

So, take this back and order new it is then..

I paid £6 for my belt from an auto factor mate- go to a motex or euro car parts. Toothed or un toothed doesn't make much difference to be honest.
