    J5221 Freshen up

Hi guys, recently I did a head gasket change on my 5, all went well its allowed me enough time to set up the fuelling an boost I preferred before giving up again.

It failed whilst I was driving to work (30mph) just started smoking and then misfiring. I left it a couple of weeks and spent this past week looking at projects on here to give me motivation to crack on with mine.

Well today I started, ill let the photos do the rest.

Here's one from when I finished last hg change -

    Engine out and on stand

Head of to discover this.. Can anyone explain what causes this? Last hg change I noticed a slight bit of this "pittin" on the head but thought I'd risk it, which ending up biting me in the ass..

Also noticed a slight bit on the piston. Can Someone give me advise on what to do with this ? Replace or will it be ok?

Then gave the block a degrease and a deep steam to get rid of the **** and ready for some paint

Then gave the engine bay steam clean also, so can start work on rust in the bay and also replace steering gaitor and cv boots.

Engine left to soak in diesel and multi-lube to stop rusting or corrosion

That was enough work for today. Car pushed back inside and left till Monday now :-)

Any advice or helpful comments more than welcome. I've never done this kind of work before today was the first time i had removed a engine, so anything constructive would be appreciated.

Would also like to thank Mark Butterworth, Steve light and Mark Galvin on the advise given to help me on understanding so far. You've been great help and a credit to this site

    Thanks

Ps is post better bloody work on the time it's take me!

    What causes this?

Haven't messed with ignition timing only just done my fuelling and used a wideband and the fuelling never dropped below 11.3 on wot?

Looks like its been detting heavily at some point. The head needs a face to be used agsin, might be a new head if loads needs skimming off.

What are original measurements on a head mate ? I measured mine up an it was around 73.5ish mm I don't really want to be skimming in case it's already been done in the past? Aliso I personally think the det has gone to deep into the head for skimming

    Re: J5221 Freshen up

You could get away with it at 73mm, standard is 73.5mm. If you skim it any more you could open up the squish area. If you dont want to skim its new head time matey

Cool bud. Most likely going to get a head mate, what about the piston? Will I get away withit or need renewing also?

    Re: J5221 Freshen up

A few pictures from today's efforts.

    Sump

    Few other bits also

Whilst the block was wet I decided to attack the engine bay and get rid of the wires and make room for some repairs.

Left it in some can primer for now until I get round to changing the colour

I then got conned into a machine polish wash and wax on the misses car..

That's all for today, thanks for looking

    Re: J5221 Freshen up

If you can't get super unnleadded where you are and still want to whack a fair bit of boost through it I would make the tdc adjustable and retard the timing a bit.
Put the tdc bracket in a vice very gently clamped on the metal bit and tap the metal bracket so it moves the plastic sensor and take it off, clean all little broken bits of plastic out and slide sensor back on the bracket. The sensor should still be tight on the bracket but now you can tap the sensor toward the front of the engine to retard the ignition timing.

    Re: J5221 Freshen up

Been back at it today guys -

Carry on from prepping engine bay for paint.

Was going to paint today but needed to head to town for a trim

Gave the seats a tidy up/ dye they had faded over the past year being parked up for almost a year

Then modified rear bumper to suit my sidey

    Taking the mould

Mould then removed an placed into position

    Then fibre glassed from rear

    Mould removed

    Finished result

    Thanks for looking

So after 3 weeks of umm'ing and errr'in and a lot of " right that's the one...Ahhh I dunno now.." I picked a colour and painted the engine bay.

    Silver under coat

    And the top coat

Can see the flip in this pic -

And a well deserved dinner at half 9 lol

    That's all. Thanks for looking

Thanks for your kind words! Means alot.

Updating this thread is what's keeping me motivated. I now feel if I go home after work without doing something to the car, I'm letting the team down hahaha

    Almost forgot about this thread.

Been taking my time with the car, sort of lost interest ect but after the rtoc Facebook page popping up on my newsfeed every day it's kept me at it these last couple of weeks.

    Gearbox

    Liners cleaned up

Rings fitted and pistons going in

    Water pump before

    After and crank pulley

New head I aquired from ebay!

Picked these puppies up for 150

New rocker cover painted because the last one was chrome and we all know when happens when u paint chrome !

    Inlet

Engine going together. Before anyone mentions, I now know why you shouldn't put head on with rods in place it was a lonnnnng day ! Lol

    Now bodywork...

That's all for now guys !

Thanks guys waiting for my parcel from mark this week which contains a servo and new mc so I new to change that before fitting the lump. hopefully without damaging the bay or engine!

Do people prefer dropping engine in with gearbox fitted? Which is the best way about this..

Do people prefer dropping engine in with gearbox fitted? Which is the best way about this..
Really good work mate. Its best IMO to put engine in with gearbox attached I have done it both ways and I painted my bay and had to do it again when I changed gearbox due to scratching it engine craneing the whole lot in together is much more controled and saves the back
