    Rust in an awkward place

Need some help with this one as I can see it raising some eyebrows.

Had some surface rust on offside suspension turret, right on the vin markings, gave it a rub and it was worse than expected. Was my own fault for not doing doing the job right when I re painted the engine bay and leaving it far too long before sorting it out.

The metal is so thin I've gone through when cutting back to bare metal, so I can't re stamp it. I think the only option is to cut it out and put new metal back.

So is anybody able to stamp my vin into a repair section or know anybody who can do it for me as I don't want it to look like it's a ringer. Don't really know where to go to get it done, any help would be appreciated

Just take pics before and after.. Then people will know why it's been re-stamped.

And most likely your not going to sell for a few years, if when you do it will sell to somebody you know or that they know the car... It wouldn't put me of buying the car if people where honest and kept pictures etc...

Seen the same happen on a gtt years ago. Just take before and after pics. I think you can get the vin number restamped.

Re: Rust in an awkward place

This is it really, I've owned the car 13 years and I don't think I'd ever sell it, I've got the log book and vin plate. Going to take a few snaps when i get round to the repair and put it into my project thread so people can see, i dont want to hide anything, i just dont want it to look like it's been done by the local car thief with parkinsons, which it would if i did it myself

I wouldn't bother stamping it but with all the new mot laws and them getting stricter it must have a stamp and plate to pass.

I dont think mine is even stamped on the OS turret. If I remember mine is just a sticker. Of course it does have a VIN/Oval plate etc..

Cut the vin plate off with a grinder, then shape it nicely when its off, do the welding work and pop rivet it back on mate. Take photos of the work you do and then you can explain it should you ever have to sell it. Plus you can print this thread off to back up your work

Re: Rust in an awkward place

I did think about just repairing it and getting my mate to do a clear perforated sticker for the tower but didn't want the hassle of telling vosa/police/mot man why it's a sticker and not stamped/engraved. I have seen some 5s with a clear sticker over the stamp which is what gave me the idea.

Going to keep searching for someone who can stamp the metal as I'm in no hurry, as you may have noticed from my project thread

Might be worth contacting your local vosa place, they will point you in the right direction for a vin restamp.

The gtt's are stamped with the clear sticker on top. My van has it on the drivers side seat rail from new.

Strut brace tends to cover some of it up, as long as you have the metal plate still. Hows project slowly slowly coming along mate?

    Slowly lol

On a serious note though I have heard people have had to take strut braces off as they cover the stamp, guess its down to how friendly the mot man is

Ahh ok mate, slow but progressing is positive! not made that much progress with my projects. Yeah, remember going for an mot once, the strut brace covered some of the chassis no. on the turret, and also the vin plate on the bulk head DOH! not a question of 'same again boss' lol
