Yesterday grinding progress.....
Yesterday grinding progress.....
And today's. Finally done with the wheel arches. Well, for now anyway.
Next up is the underside of the rear seats and boot floor grind...........
Two more afternoons grinding sessions down..... Getting close now, really wanting to get on with doing some thing other than this, but can't do the next stages till it's all off.
Just to add, you may of not noticed at first glance, but I've cut off and smoothed the oe exhaust hangers and welded new ones in else where for better fitment and stability.
I will have the ecu bud. Sorry wrong add :-)

Had a cancelation at the office so sneak'd off early to put some hours in on my forever never ending grinding....
So where am I at now four weeks on? Well, STILL GRINDING!
BUT, I'm nearly there. Spent about another two hours at it then got fed up with getting bits flying off and stabbing me on the face even with protection on, so moved on to removing the torsion bar so can reach the areas it's blocking, plus need to re paint it now after catching it a few time and getting over spray on.
Anyway, whilst under there I could see all these hard bits that's taken forever to try and get off, and as I've done such a long job getting 99% of it off everywhere I didn't want to get near the end and start letting the standard drop! So I switched the knotted wire wheel for the cutting disc and did this!
O M G !
Whoops!
Radiator going in the boot??
Emergency escape hatch?
I will be cutting up the engine bay too and maybe some of the floor, I'm not sure yet.
So why cut out the boot floor that's not rusted?
Well, as the regulator visitors on this site will know, I've just sold my whole engine set up, so maybe, just maybe I've cut things out to make space to run a four wheel drive engine set up combo................
Common more info needed by the way your crazy
crazy is indeed a word id use
only joking goobs
but when I collect all the other stuff im having a nose around, I can keep a secret lol
mitzy, Scooby lump?? jap crap as you'd say
Whoops! 'Fred Flintstone' rear wheel drive?!
Five week's of four hour sessions totalling to 40 hour to grind the whole underside to bare metal and I'm finally done! NEVER AGAIN. So much for me thinking 4-6 hours.
So now that is out the way, Im guna start cutting up the rest of my shell next week after I buy a new angle grinder as mine died just as I finished luckily.
Here's the last of my underside, keep watching as from now on things will be going full one off custom, WOO...
[
I guess its going to be audi vw gearbox and 4x4 running gear bolted to f4r lump
Exactly what I was thinking -Haldex with aftermarket controller?
I've be looking at this you need to build a new subframe and move the steering rack up out of the way to allow for the transfer box off the gearbox to fit and build a bigger tunnel for the propshaft
It's really interesting that 2 other people have this idea seems I'm not the first either found a local body shop to me (AK Bodycraft) that is 5 minutes walk away and he used to own this
http://m.youtube.com/watch?v=k9gFJjOCPxc
I got speaking to him and he said why don't you 4wd my 5 happy days as he even offered advice and a helping hand. So only got as far as looking into it as not wanting to do it this year.
So far your car looks amazing so far can't wait to see what happens next
Buy a crash damaged Audi TT, cut the floor with mounting point for the subframes out of the TT cut the 5 floors out then fit the TT floors in place! Simples!
Ok I know its not as simple as that but its a way I would do it, this way would make mounting everything a lot simpler. Basically converting the underside of the 5 into a TT, use all standard VW parts and as minimal custom parts as possible
Something I have always thought about too doing a 4x4 5
A lot of good info above. And there those bloody mark one golfs again, maybe it's a sign? Anyway, without going off topic etc, back to my build.
Got it back on all four wheels and rolling again, for now anyway.
Started with the chopping of my engine bay, I've cut out most of the "boob" section and left in the front part for the bonnet catch set up, I will properly be cutting more, but this will do for now till I bring my new engine set up to the garage as then I will know more on what's in the way and where to weld in mounts for it to sit on, more to come on that nearer the time.
Also, as I've been buying some more new tools, I finally got round to removing the rest of the sound proving off the floor using my new fancy heat gun kit.
So there we have it, I've just got to go round the inside with the wire wheel to remove the seam sealant then I can start welding it all up, things should start happening pretty fast from now on.
Oh, and as we all know I like todo things the hard way, I'm attempting todo/get body work done around me as I'm doing other things. Whatever I can take off and not needed to be on the car will be dropped at the body shop to be prep'd for paint etc, so as long as I can get the engine in correctly with everything in place in record time I could have a fitted engine and complete full body work within 4/5 weeks!
Here's a couple of snaps, I wouldn't wanna get ban'd under the new club rules for doing an update without photos would I Nad.

Still not got round to getting a big bottle of Argon/c02 mix for my welder but was given a small bottle off a friend so decided to have a play. Wire wheeled off all the sealant inside my shell, got a bit messy.
Then moved onto setting up the welder and doing some practise runs on the cuts off I've chopped out of my shell, once happy, I made a start on seam welding my shell.
It came out alright I guess, I'm not overly impressed, I got round once of the main inside section then the little bottle run out. I didn't expect to get much out of it anyway, but I did do a lot of welding on the cut off panels to set it up, so really for a 60 litre bottle that wasn't to bad.
I did give it a quick once over with the sanding disc, I may do more, but at the same time, once I've painted and put sealant on it you won't see it anyway, but will prob still flat it some more and maybe give it another go over? See how I feel at the time after I've done the whole car.
Moving on, as I said I run out of argon and as I was in the zone I foolishly hooked up the c02 bottle I had that come with it and what a mistake that was.
I'm no pro, and this all a big learning curve as I'm doing it alone this time with out my welder friend to advice and tweak the settings etc, it kinda went down hill after that and just wanted to blow pin holes and penetrate to much as your see in the pic below, so before making any more work for myself I called it a day till I get my proper gas bottle next week.
Welding gas, check!
Got a couple of big sheets of metal in, so set about sorting out my rear wheel flintstones missing boot floor today.
I did toy with the idea of fixing in a carbon fibre boot floor, but seem'd pointless as wouldn't be seen anyway.
So set about measuring up the hole, cut my sheet to size then trim'd in the curve around the rear edge and cut it to shape, test fit, then drilled it up for plug welding.
Then got some bar for reinforcement, chopped to size, trim the edges to give it a snug flush fit and welded that in to.
Placed the new floor sheet in and away I went with plug welding it into place.
Welding on the exhaust hanger then went onto the rear brake comp plate and... RUN OUT OF WIRE.
So that kinda ended the day. When I get some more wire il finish off welding that seam, then seam weld round the edges inside the boot and flatten the welds.
Nice work does this mean some more grinding?
Funny enough, yes! But of the sanding type this time Mike.
Lots of progress has been made since last update, but usual waiting on third party's are holding me back again.
I finished off the underside, that will all be sealed and stone chipped once I've painted the inside.
how long are you going to keep us guessing goobs
So where am I at now? Well, I'm kinda back to where I started near enough bang on a year later, I got the windscreen out and a fresh new genuine one off Mike (Thanks.) with the proper fixing, not cheap but well worth the money.
Bought a orbital sander, stripped any and every clips etc out and been flat out sanding down the whole inside again for paint job number two.
Not the best picture but you get the idea.
I got my other engine, gear box, gear shifter, hydronic clutch set up all ready and waiting to start making it all fit, BUT, till the shell back at the body shop for the inside paint job I can't get on with anything else, but hopefully that will be by the end of the week, then I can seal and stone chip the underside then start welding up brackets etc to make my power plant fit.
It looks like it's all a long way off right now, but I do feel things will be making a fast progress once the inside painted.
Couple pictures.
Good work mate
Nothing really to report, but that's due to things out of my control at the moment, I won't go into detail. Car is all sanded inside and ready to go to the paint shop, so hoping this will be done ASAP as it's been ready for nearly two weeks.
On the plus side, got a few new parts so il post them up.
New genuine wing, windscreen and full fittings thanks to Mike at GT Turbo Spares, top man.
And not to forget, after how many months I finally got a Prima Racing Clio 16V style bonnet thanks to James5!
Just needs a little work but nothing major, but god knows what those holes in the front are all about.
Car has sat in the garage for about 6 weeks now, still no paint on the inside. But had some filler round the rear arches to smooth them out and around the roll cage brackets then some primer, as it stands it's just needs to go to the body shop for a proper spray job in the oven then other things can happen. In reality, the last two months have been a complete waste of time with nothing going on to this car due to things out of my control, but here a couple picture updates anyway.
Now for something a bit more interesting.
Car came with original engine, I gave that away, then dropped in the F7R, then sold that. It's no secret that I'm a big honda fan, but at the same time I love turbo engines. As stated at the start of this whole build thread, I want the best of both worlds, reliable day to day modern manageable car but also crazy high revving that can take a beating. It was always the plan from day one todo this conversion to a R5, so here we have it.
Honda K20a DOHC vtec 2.0 16V turbo conversion from EP3 Type R using the cable driven 6 speed box, hondata Kpro ECU, custom Mainfold etc matched to my current T34 turbo.
Standard block and gearbox in decent condition should/can cope with 500bhp at breaking point. My turbo shouldn't be to far off making near that. Plan, run it near that till it either blows or once I've rounded up other upgraded parts need to strip and rebuild the block to 900bhp capable.
As some of you may of seen when I've been to a few meets, I've been in a silver Type R, that was infact my donner car but enjoyed being back in one so much I ended up buying another one to break instead.
What a crap update I was getting excited expecting big changes etc.
Unbeflippinglievable
and one minute later I'm eating humble pie. Chop chop.
Donner Type R number two.
Before and after stripping, now ready and waiting to be lifted out.
I too am a big Honda engine fan and the K20A is an awesome lump. Lots of options for power.
There's an some Aussie brothers competing at the World Time Attack Championship in Sydney for the last few years by the name of Benny and Jimmy Tran. They're running K24 with a Rotrex type supercharger. Their car is making a bit over 350kw (almost 500 ponies) and has been pretty faultless. Nice guys too.
Can't wait to see it take shape!
What made u pic the Honda lump mate.
My last. CAr was a type r. Loved it.
Great choice of motor to put in there, you see stock bottom end k20 knocking out 500+hp!!!!
Tadaaa might change plans though, evo 4x4 or front engine rwd gets my attention, wanted to be different (or the same as a few one here) and put the engine in the back but i'm affraid stability/handling wise wouldn't be too best...
btw, if you want to go k24 turbo i might have some interesting parts for you
So much has happen in the last six months, some good, some bad.
Nothing has really happen to the car since, main reason is a failed 12 years relationship which this build hasn't help the situation with at all. There has been times that has made me question weather to just give it all away.
Anyway, just to bring things and what's been going on upto speed, I was offer'd a 5 pretty much how I wanted which in the long run worked out to save me a lot of money and time then fit my turbo k20a set up into that, hence I sold a lot of my parts off end of last summer that I didn't need only to be let down at the last minute and now I'm really left in the sh1t.
I'm bit stuck right now with home life, career and trying to single handed buy another home, so short story is there not much to see for a while but I will be trying to get some working going on it in the next coming month now things are slowly going in the right direction.
Pull'd it out the garage Sunday and this is where I'm at. More to follow when weather starts to brighten up.
