182 box doesn't have a speedo in the gearbox, its picked up off the ABS sensor on the car. phase 1 172 or the 172 cup both have mechanical speedos which then can be used with the clocks from a non gt turbo 5 or can get the renault 19 or clio clocks to fit with a bit of changing around with the facia on them.

so if i had a 172 in there instead it would work with the old drive? but with the 182 im pretty much buggered?

Also i believe it is only the 182 internals not the entire box?

    So he says anyway

I had a 172 clio gearbox and put a set of clocks from a Clio 1.4 rt. Been a while since I changed them but worked fine. Any reason why you wont go back to the JB3 box?

No sockets or trolley jack then. Thats all that is needed really to change the box.

Think you going to be stuck with no speedo then unless you want to fit a Clio dash into the 5, has been done and picked it up that way.

    Re: 182 gearbox conversion

The on,y way to make the 182 gearbox work in an R5 is to use something like an SPA digi speedo with a magnetic pick up on the driveshaft somewhere.....

I am under the impression the only way to take a box out of a 5 is to remove the engine aswell?

Matt, "so he says" the guy i bought it of was a friend and told me about all this stuff but with recent events im not massively confident any of it is the truth, so im qite sceptical on whatever he has said!

I do have a spare sat nav so if its going to be much work il just plumb that into the wiring and stick it to the dash

So will the ph1 172 gearbox fit the 5 engine? What driveshafts would you use? And you'll have to use the 172 clocks?

the way i see it, im sure somebody will correct me if im wrong but, the 172 will bold onto the C1J, the 172 box has a mechanical pick up so the one from your 5 box will bolt onto this thus not needing to change your clocks ect standard drive shafts from the 5

172 cup and 172 phase 1 gearbox have a drive gear and cable attachment. R5 will have a sensor and chopper wheel inside the gearbox. Not compatible.

Edit, I mean cable and sensor attachment fitted to 172 cup and phase 1 172.

Box can come out through the top if necessary leaving engine in situ. Its pretty long winded but do-able
