    I found that the freshly painted tailgate had a seized hinge when I came to fit it, I got it 2nd hand and didn't check the hinges. The hinged move a bit but when on the car it wouldn't close properly without bending the mounting point on the car.

    I cut a complete hinge off my old tailgate but it made a real mess of it getting it off in one piece. I decided that cutting the seized hinge off the freshly painted one would also make a complete mess of the paint work so I chopped both hinges in the middle and welded them together. I cleaned up the welds and sprayed it with zinc primer. Here are some pictures:

    Got some more parts back from the sprayer, front and rear bumper and side skirts, will have the rest this week, got a lot on with work next few weeks but hope to have it driving by the end of this month maybe ready for August surrey meet

    here is the bumper, covers the oil cooler up so might raise that up so it sits in the air flow through the grille

    So I have 95% of the parts back from the body shop now. Only bits left are the spoiler and rear bumper. They managed to spray the black strip on the rear bumper grey so they are either going to spray it black or I might plastidip it black and do the same with the front bumper strips and other plastic trim on the outside of the car. They also didn't cut the side indicators into the wings like I asked

    Found time to get the car out the garage, even started it up and used reverse and first gear which was nice! Soft pedal clutch and power steering felt great and it seems to start and run well. Tappets sound a bit noisy but this might be the 285 cam?

    I sprayed the inside of the front wings with stone chip to help prevent rust and put some of the parts back on. Panels need lining up and a few body kit nuts and bolts sorted. Really liking the yellow fogs and indicators..Wheels need a clean up at some point or I might even change them. here are the pictures:

    Got some more done on fitting the body kit. I got some M8 threaded rivet nut inserts to fit in the rear arch mounting holes so I could use M8 nuts to fix the arches on. I bored out the holes using a Dremel and then glued the nuts in and cut the top of them down to size. Makes a proper fixing on the arches which made fitting them much easier. I also had to drill a couple of holes in my nice shiny new paint as the body shop didn't drill them before painting.





    Fitted the rear bumper with new lower brackets but they seem to make the bumper sit down at a bit of an angle like they are a bit to long, going to either mod them with the welder or fab up some so there isn't such a big gap between the bumper and the boot. put the boot badges on for a look also...



    Then fitted rear window.

    I've not had much time to do any work on the car the last couple of weeks, just dropped my brake calipers off at the local powder coater to be blasted and coated. Once their back and on I can start thinking about finishing the body work and electrics to get an mot.

    Got my brakes back from the powder coater.

    I found some cheap refurbed Renault 5 calipers on ebay with the pad holder for 12mm discs and swapped them my existing ones that fit the GTT discs. Seemed to save a lot of money doing it this way instead of buying a pair of "GTT" calipers that are the same. I got my old rear pad holders coated, so need to swap out the newer ones that are already on the car.

    Got them all sand blasted and coated in RAL 5002, I wanted a slightly different shade but they only had that in stock and it would have cost a fair bit more to get the powder in so went with it, it was only £60 to get them done.

    Building them back up with green stuff pads. Hopefully get them on the car this weekend.

    Got the calipers on all round. Just waiting on some braided hose to pipe up my brake bias valve so I can get them bled. Got the drivers door on, I've modified the roll pin hinges to fit Torx pins to make it easier to remove the doors in the future.

    It was fairly simple, I might do a "how to" on it when I do the other door and take some pictures etc.

    You have to get the old roll pins out first, not easy!
    Drill out the hinge part that is on the car to fit the shims.
    Grind a bit of metal off the top and bottom of the hinge so the shim flanges sit flat on the hinge
    Tap a thread into the hinge on the door
    Fit the door with new torx pins, job done!

    Jeff, your calipers look awesome. I'll be changing mine soon and I've used caliper paint in the past, but they've always looked a bit dodgy. I don't think I'll go for a powder coat, but maybe a high temp spray after damn good clean and degreasing?

    Woz, I was considering the spray can route as it is cheaper than powder coating but my calipers needed a really good clean up to remove all the surface rust etc so I got a quote on it and as it was only £60 for a bead blast and powder coat I just did that.

    Interesting. I might check out a few places here. That said, I can almost guarantee that it won't be that cheap in Aus. Nothing is!

    Well its getting very close to a drivable car now. Things done this week: I've finished the brake lines for the rear bias valve, made up some braided lines that T off the copper pipes under the car and come up through the seat belt bolt holes, the clio seats have belt clips on them so don't need the holes any more which was handy! Just need to bleed the brakes now.

    Fitted both front seats and put all my stereo wiring back in. Sounds much better with the sound deadening Realised that having the rear cage means I need to cut bits of trim up to make it all fit back in so going for the semi stripped out look until I can be bothered to mod all the trim. I've covered the plastic in some grey carpet also.

    Took the front bumper, wings and side skirt back off so I could drill out the fixing holes on the sills for the side skirts, using some plastic bolts to fix the skirts as any metal fixing will just rust in that location.

    Built the passenger door back up and put that on and also the bonnet.

    Just need to do the brake bleed. Wire up the clio dash controls, sort out the ignition barrel mount. Get the front window put in. New tyres and wheels. then get an mot. and drive it, then worry about tiding the last bits, interior, decals, badges etc.. up after that....

    I secured my LH rear arch extension with nylon studs (bolts with the head cut off) and it worked really well.

    Talking about your Calipers again for a minute, what did you torque your pentagon drive bolts (the big one) up to? I haven't been able to find much on the net, but think 50lb/ft might be close to the mark?

    Quick update for this week, I've been working out the wiring for connecting up the clio stalks to the R5 wiring, I've so far got the side, dipped and main beam working, indicators, front washer jets. Just need to work out the front wipers and the rest will stay on the R5 dash switches. been interesting to say the least working it all out with the useless R5 wiring diagrams but i'm getting there....

    Finally managed to get the wiring sorted for the Clio stalks, wipers were a challenge as the relay set up is different between the two cars, had to wire in a secondary relay to get the intermittent wipe and wash/wipe working. I won't go into the details on the wiring as its very dull but if anyone ever wants to try this conversion let me know. I had to extend the wiring for the rear fog lamp so I could put the switch on the left hand side of the steering wheel as the wiper stalk hits the switch, in its place I've mounted the relay for the wipers. You can see in the pictures below the dash that had to be cut out to get it all to fit, the under side is fine as its all hidden its just the top bit that looks a bit butchered. I'm going to live with it for now as its not too bad.

    So on the Clio stalks I've got all the same controls that the 5GTT ones had,
    Left: side/dipped/main beam lights including main beam flash + L/R indicators
    Right: intermittent/slow/fast wipers + windscreen wash/wipe
    Horn is now on a push button in the center of the steering wheel

    The stalks have more switches on them but the wiring to change the dash switches to the stalks is a nightmare so I left them as is. The adjustable intermittent wiper speed had to be bypassed as this doesn't work with the 5 relay set up.

    Need to come up with a solution for the ignition barrel next...












    Also dry fitted the new windscreen with new seals. old tax disc to remind me how long it's been off the road!

    Got it off a seller on ebay, its the Renault 5 one, they ordered it in from Germany, came as a roll and i cut it down a few inches to fit. it was only £8.95

    Had the 5 out the garage today and with the help of my Fiancee bled the brakes, did all 4 twice as the peddle was still a bit spongy after the first go. Had a go forwards and backwards in first and reverse out in the road, felt great to have it driving again.

    Once i get the ignition barrel sorted and the windscreen fitted I think I pretty much just need some number plates and tyres for an mot then its:

    That's a bargain. If you go for the Renault 3 piece seal your probably looking at £150+.

    Came up with a solution for the ignition barrel, made a hole in the side of the dash and mounted the ignition barrel using the housing I cut off the OE column to hold it in place from behind, covered the housing in a bit of carbon wrap to cover up the metal and it works a treat! May end up molding some plastic to cover the hole properly and tidy it up but for now it works.

    Also, with a bit of modification, I've managed to get the dash lower cover to fit as well.

    You could maybe get a second hand lower cowl and use various bits of it to fill in some of the gaps.

    This week I wired up a new 4 pole relay to turn the fuel pump on and off from the aux output on the Nodiz. I did have the oe relay removed and I just bridged the live and feed to the pump with a switch that I was turning on and off as required, but its not ideal.

    So i've taken a live feed off the acc 2 position on the ignition system and am using the Aux connection on the nodiz to switch the relay to ground. It does this by an rpm trigger function. I've set it to 5rpm so the pump kicks in as soon and the engine is cranked on the starter motor. When the nodiz reads 5 rpm it switches the aux connection to ground which makes the relay, closing the contact and completing the fuel pump power circuit feed. Turn the engine off, fuel pump stops, just like the oe set up. job done.

    Getting the windscreen fitted tomorrow, decided to pay someone rather than make a mess of it myself. Also got some nice new number plates to fit, so I might go out for a spin round the block tomorrow
