Fuel Tank Leak, "looks like a Bung", petrol dripping out!

New poster! (less than 10 posts)

    Hi All,
Can you help / advise please?

Noticed a strong petrol smell yesterday and looked under the car, noticed a wet patch, Petrol is leaking out the O/S of the tank about 2 inchs up.

It seems like a "Bung" hole where the bungs obviously come out but no one has heard of a bung in a fuel tank? I can put my finger and and its yellow plastic.

Anyway, i got some Gauze and Petro Patch Putty, putty says its for Fuel tanks and works on steel lead iron alloy brass copper Glass fibre but ive heard the tanks on these are plastic but been told the putty works on PLastic but to check it every so often..

    Anyone heard of this Bung?

    Attached a pic

    Thanks, Stuart

Poop, Just read this, won't stick to plastic http://www.granvilleoil.com/product_info.php?prod_id=1

F*#king janky thing went on T-cup at this years ND so I had to fix it there....... Awful

Back of the car on axle stands, drop the fuel tank & then buy a few chemical metal, sikaflex things from Halfrauds and just lash it all over the bung & stop it leaking.

It's just so easy to fix it properly when you drop the tank, if you try & fix it in situ, it'll bite you in the bum!!!!

Did you have to disconnect everything to drop one side of the tank or did you odrop it right down?

    I did contemplate it
I have this Putty stuff from Car Spares, but just not for plastic it says... Im going to drop the tank one side but not sure if i have to start disconnecting everything which it says to actually drop the tank right out..
Just need 4 inchs to get to it all, I can get axle stands and ive got a decent soldering iron.. Just need to drain the fuel all off first, clean it and go for it..

make sure the tanks empty and its perfectly clean and dry before starting, then key the plastic with something(emery cloth, sand paper) make sure you get the putty right inside as its the crack that leaks not the edge of the bung. try to fill it as much as possible. and give it overnight to set if you can.

I would drop the tank and make sure it's a good job. One less thing to worry about then going forward. Shouldn't cost much apart from your time

to drop it enough to get to it you have to basically take it out. might as well take it out to be honest.

Did mine 2 years ago, with tiger seal, ran the car till the fuel level was low, used a pallet knife didn't touch a bolt or drop the tank or anything, just wacked the bung full of tiger seal took me 5 minutes

    Job done!

Does tigerseal suggest not using on plastic?

    I have this http://www.granvilleoil.com/product_info.php?prod_id=2

I can purchase another one but are they all basically the same..
Only because its the poitn of having to get it up in the air to drop the tank..

To be honest, I don't know, but mine has been fine since I did it and for £7 and the cost of the mrs winging about her pallet knife it was well worth it

I just made sure i packed it into the bung as much as was physically possable with the pallet knife, and also around it, I didn't even clean it up beforehand

I have tryed to pull sideskirts off before now that have been stuck on with tiger seal and to say it stubborn is an understatement and it's definatly petrol resistant

Only just seen this thread but have just posted about the same problem - mine has a hole in the same place but looks like it has already been patched with putty before so may just replace it with a spare tank that I already have.
Will wait to see what happens with yours before I change tanks

I suppose if it's been repaired before (mine hadn't) then it's probably worth dropping the tank to clean it up and re-seal properly or indeed swap the tank.

For me tho, rather than fork out for a new tank I would just keep on repairing it, if mine has lasted over two years then the proof is in the pudding.

Took about an hour, up on ramps, managed to drop the tank a couple of inches.
Rubbed down, wiped n dried. Pressed with putty and caked with Silicon sealer.
Going to keep an eye on it every day but will leave it a good while before I put over £12 of fuel in as that seems to be the point where leaking started.
I'll keep you posted and thank you all for advice n help!
