    Forum revival needed

It's a bit quiet in this r5turbo/ turbo 2 forum!
Is there any r5 turbo, turbo 2 or maxi owners in the Rtoc these days?? How many of these awesome little cars are there left on the road in the uk?
This is probably the most iconic motorsport car ever produced by Renault. If it wasn't for this car there wouldn't be a r5gtt. It just seems the Rtoc is just about the r5gtt that's not a bad thing but I'd like to learn about our only group b car aswell.
I'd love to read another members restoration project/ rallying/ hill climb thread etc on one of these cars.
    Please more info, pics etc...

    Re: Forum revival needed

There's a few specific uk and foreign clubs for the 5 turbo, turbo 2 and maxi.
I think there's more relevant information to offer members/owners on those sites.

Sparkie I'm certain knows a few uk clubs/sites, (I vaguely recall a yahoo user group if it's still running?)
Try www.5turbo.fr and I think Andrews mk1 Renault 5 site is probably a better source of 5 turbo info.

The rtoc is still mainly centred around the 5 gtt and mk2 5 but that's mainly because it was previously the 5gttoc and spread its wings a bit. Moggy and sparkie are probably your best bet on here regarding the 5 turbo but they are both ex owners so that's expected.

You were looking at a 5 turbo project at one point weren't you Pete?

    Re: Forum revival needed

Yeh I'm still trying to persuade the same owner of the t2 to sell it to me. I go to the garage where it's kept every week to business with the owner. Last week I was looking in a damp container thru some cardboard boxes of all the parts from the t2 that had been stripped off it in preparation for painting about 8 yrs ago.
Seems a proper shame for such an iconic car to end up.
Is there any t2 owners left in the Rtoc??
I recall a member from York with a tour de course replica??

We fitted an extractor fan/ducting and wiring for him, and repaired some of John Prices shocking wiring repairs. Dangling live wires...

I thought the RHD cars were converted using different steering gear and apparently don't feel the same/as good to drive?

RHD conversions were done with gordini/gordini turbo steering rack and dashboard etc. Which as far as I know has a different number of turns lock to lock.

I've never driven a lhd turbo 2 and my dad hasn't,but I can't imagine it feeling any sharper/quicker on the steering(could be wrong though)
To be honest he wouldn't have bought it if it was lhd,as he's owned lhd cars before, and really didn't like them.

Anyone know the difference between the two racks?

i geuss it could be a bit quicker with the weight reduction on the front wheels requiring less effort to turn.

If my quick google results are to be believed its 3.7 turns lock to lock for the gordini and 3.3 turns lock to lock for the turbo/turbo 2.

That's near enough the same as the campus rack compared to the gt turbo rack.

Spotted these the other day. Thought I would post here in case any Alpine owners were interested. Not mine by the way !

Cheap compared to a 5 GT Turbo gear knob.

Something was strangling the power,I'm sure the inlet manifold was to blame,I think he ran it at 2 bar and it didn't make over 250hp

just before this gets brought back up again....

on 2 sets of *rollers* that car made nearly 300bhp! it was mapped by Glen T and Mr Omex himself, but then it went 'somewhere' to sort it out. Not sure why it needed sorting as it drove all the way to france and back and apart from melting a starter motor (cheers for the push Sparkie) it didn't miss a beat.

Everything on the car apart from the exhaust manifold was custom made, inlet, chargecooler, infact there was Paperwork from Salv Sacco that it was a 300bhp engine "inside".

but when it went 'somewhere' once they'd mapped it and rebuilt it it could never get over 240bhp. Don't know why but I know the guy that 'remapped it' said it was running too much advance. Guess he didn't check the actual figures the works cars where (go look them up and be scared!)

still miss it and hate the fact it ended up looking like it did!

I love the fact that SteveT2 and his dad kept theirs looking like a TDC and didnt' go down the maxi route, as unless you do the whole hog, personally it doesn't work!

right off to go and look at pictures of our trip to france, not many cars gave Stu21t's M3 a race upto 100! ;-)

Sorry to of brought it up i didnt realise there was some kafuffle over it. I thought it was innocent banta.
Colour/modifications or not it was a lovely car maybe not to everyones tastes but still things like that can be changed and it would of been a very cheap entry in to owning such an amazing car.

I think thats where it went mate, glen's rollers had it high up and I ran it somewhere else and it was nearly the same, 2 out of 3, I know which figures I believed!

    Tony,

    no worries

prob with t2's are.... its a 1970's design!

take the clio v6, amazing cars, but a 182 would have them on a good twisty track!
T1 T2 maxi, amazing cars, but 2wd, and when you've got some scrote in a corsa 1.2 sitting 1inch from your bumper, who you know isn't insured, you start to worry!!!

Yeah i agree, and completely understand, driven lots of V6's and gotten to know them pretty well, there basically a kit car but few cars make you feel as special driving them.
In a similar manner the 5 turbo has been a car ive dreampt of owning since i was in primary school and even if the only one i could ever own was a rotten missmatched pile of crap i'd still snap it up if i could lol.
It would almost certainly not live up to expectations, i think i just need another engine in the back of my 5. Its the whistling behind your head that got me

Well I suppose if u get the same results on 2 out of 3 rollers u know which to believe. It been said a million times Rollers are good fun (cars look and sound great on them) but uve got to take the results with a pinch of salt as there's to many variables for them to be accurate (ie calibration, wheel spin and an experienced operator)
Having said that scoffs rollers seem really good and all his equipment looks brand new and really professional. I think scoff mainly uses them to map cars and keep his license clean. ( rather than power run printouts with bizarre power claims as per the max power rolling road days)
