    Project Old5kool

I thought after lurking around here for a number of years I would start up a project thread for my 5 restoration as the work is now well and truly underway !.

First of all a bit of history.

My love of the GT Turbo started in the 90’s when a friend of mine had a Tungsten grey which was fettled by Prima Racing. Some of you older members may remember this car as it was a demonstrator / competition car for Loud Wheels in Norbury. It had a huge Phoenix Gold ‘Son of Frankampstein’ amp and USD horns etc and the sub box fitted in the scuttle area. It was featured in some of the ICE mags in the 90’s. I think the amp was like 2 grand on its own and in total it was getting on close to £10k worth of kit!. Everytime me and another friend went out in this car we both had a huge grin when it came on boost, I then knew I had to have a 5.

So in 1997 having finished Uni and having to finally get a job the hunt was on for a 5 of my own to replace the 1.3 Escort I had been driving until then. Now there’s an old adage, never buy the first car you see. However in my case the first car I went to view was a 1989 Pearl white 5 GTT with one middle aged lady owner since new, full service history and a stack of paperwork longer than the bible. The car had covered around 40’000 miles and apart from a blowing exhaust and some laquer peel to the spoiler was perfect. £3800 changed hands a week later I had my 5. I remember thinking when I pick it up I’m going to drive sensibly but the first dual carriage way I came too I couldn’t help myself and booted it. From then on it kind of gets addictive.

The first thing’s I did was get a CAT1 alarm installed. Living in Fulham it was kind of a must. Actually I remember years later coming out of my house to see some guy, quite posh looking, trying to open the rear windows. He reckoned his had been nicked and wanted so see if it was his ?. Being 6’1 and about 15 stone a quick word in his ear and he soon buggered off. Then there was the other time some drunk / druggy though my bonnet was his bed and was trying to sleep on it. Anyway after having the car for a couple of week’s I took it down to GT Tuning in Dorset for a service. The car was given a clean bill of health by David and Roland and they actually commented it was one of the best std cars they had seen. So I left Dorset happy, knowing I had bought a good un, and somehow mysteriously a GT Tuning sticker had ended up on the boot ?. Surprised as I hadn’t asked for it and these days even more surprised they didn’t charge me for it !.

At the time I was living in London but working in Surrey so was racking up around 70 miles a day. Therefore many more trips to GT Tuning entailed to have the car serviced and also some small mods such as a dump valve ( yes the posh and expensive Bosch one !) and a few other shiny bits and bobs. Apart from clear lights I never really changed the appearance of the car. To me the Skeete and later Carisma bodykits were just too much and changed one of the things I loved about the car, its boxy look.

After a few years everyone started raving about Andy Cutler at GDI. His prices were certainly more attractive (read cheaper) than GTT so I took my car to him. One of the first mods Andy did for me was to raise the boost to 1Bar. Wow what a difference it was like regaining the experience you get when you floored it for the first time.

After an issue with GDI I then switched again over to the newly started K-Tec. I had always found David Kirk to be a nice guy when he was at GT Tuning so had no problem with the journey back down to Dorset to have work done on my car by him.

After a few years the car was getting old, and fairly worthless, so as it was my main mode of transport I started thinking what the hey and doing some of the work myself. I work in IT by trade but most of the mechanics are fairly common sense. Just to point out way back when we all believed the hype about GrpA this and that which the tuners talked about. People then started to realise that most of it was just off the shelf parts you could get from GSF ( or Andy Spares, showing my age now ! ).

Jump forward about 6 years to 2007and my 5, now with 160K on the clocks was starting to look a bit tired. Must point out it was still on the original turbo and head gasket so all this nonsense you read about 5's blowing head gaskets constantly is rubbish. I started thinking about restoring it but wanted to make the car as near to new as possible. Therefore I started the daily ritual of searching Ebay for parts and buying up what new parts i could within reason.

Whislt searching for parts one day I saw a 1989 F Reg Campus advertised in Reading for £95 BIN. As I was now living in Hampshire I thought it could be worth a look. Pile of crap for that money your thinking but no this had only covered less than 25k and been in the same family from new. So I went to have a look with the old man thinking something’s not right here but the car was as good as it sounded so I bought it without a second thought. In fact I gave them £100 quid as they didnt have any change . This now allowed me to take my GT Turbo off the road for the restoration to begin. This was back in 2007 so its taken me a while to get to where I am now.

Not having a garage to use, its full of other rubbish, the restoration would have to be done on my drive. Therefore I wanted to make sure I had 95% of the parts I wanted before starting. I didn’t see any point bolting on nice new parts for them to be rusty again 6 months later and before the car was finished.

So that brings me up to where we are now. The car’s in the body shop having new sills and any other rust removed and repaired. Then a full respray in the original Pearl white. Gearbox is also away with The Master for a full rebuild. I have more new parts than Renault France tucked away at my parents house, actually having been to Mike’s he has loads more than me it just seems like I have tons of stuff.

Pics to follow and then I will try and give regular progress updates. I need you guys to give me a kick up the arse if I am slacking !. Plan is to have it all up and running by the end of the year. There is going to be a few top secret mod’s and little 'trick' touches, you’ll have to wait until you see the car in the flesh for those as I’m not giving anything away at this stage

Thanks for reading, hope you enjoyed the history of my 5 ownership.

A picture of the car pretty much as it was before I started ripping it to pieces. For some reason I have no pictures of the car when it was complete. If anyone has a copy of the TV program that was done for Channel 5 many years back it may be on there.

I always though the car was fairly rust free, then I removed the kit !

This was the better of the two sides.

And here's a blast from the past for some of you other long time members,

Here's a pic of it stripped and ready to go off to the body shop. Looks pretty sorry for itself. The tailgate was shot and rusted from the inside out. I picked up a replacement from a Monaco years ago so I threw that on. Car is having sill's done, both inner (thanks Ashy for making these ) and outer's. Rear bumper mountings are being replaced and both jacking points along with any other rust that is present. Jacking points were OK but I thought may as well get them done anyway. The plan is to do everything once and do it properly. Was surprised to find no rust around the rear quarter windows which was a bonus and once the screen was out that wasn't too bad either.

A couple of quick pictures to show how work is progressing at the bodyshop. Hope to have the car back in a few weeks ready to rebuild. Note in the first picture the seam/joint has been left on the sill inside the bottom of the door shut so it looks like it did when it left the factory

The other side has already been done so it's getting there.

Why I think of it here's a picture of the £95 quid Campus. As the lights were liked brand new I took the clear indicators off the GTT and swapped them over so I could use the orange ones for this restoration. Inside that thing was immaculate !. I sold it a few years back and got the 206GTI at the rear of this picture, what a mistake that thing was, no more a GTI than the Campus. That's gone as well now and I have a new'ish beetle cabriolet instead as a run around, yeah I know girl's car .

    Re: Project Old5kool

Sounds like a good project with some decent history.

I grew up in Hammersmith (Mum still lives in the same house) and have frequented some of the same establishments and fell for some of the same hype (GTT) although I always thought that Roland and Co were very approachable....

I was living in Odiham (not far from Farnborough) when I left for Australia and also remember Andy Spares in Reading.

Hope the project goes well and you can count on the guys here pushing you along as they have with me.

    Re: Project Old5kool

So this morning I though I would set about cleaning the gearbox casings ready for paint. As mentioned previously Colin (The Master) is rebuilding me a good box out of a couple I already had.

After about an hour with some degreaser I had one of the casing parts about 90% clean.

And then whilst doing the second half I found this crack !.

So the way I see It I have a couple of options.

    1) Weld the crack up.
    2) Go and get my other casing off Colin and clean that one up instead.

What's peoples opinions/experience here. Open to suggestions please.

OK, decided not to muck about with this. Spoke to Colin and going to get my other casing in a bit. Pain as I spend all morning cleaning these but cant be arsed with it causing an issue further down the line. Looks like an evening of degreasing for me tonight.

    Re: Project Old5kool

So a small update. I went to the body shop this morning. Both sills are now on and they just need to finish off the welding and then will be removing all the crud from under the car, making good anything they find, and then applying stone chip. They have also now fitted both rear bumper mount repair panels that Ashy supplied.

Whilst they are working under the car new brake lines are going to be installed. Has anyone replaced the metal fuel lines under the car ?. If so any recommendations.

As for me I need to finish painting my gearbox casings then get those back to The Master.

So a quick update to say not a lot has happened recently. Been busy with work and training for some marathon mountain bike events. Also been busy battling with my nemesis, our Grand Scenic DCI, I swear it goes wrong at least every other month. Went to the body shop yesterday and the car is still having the underside sorted so no pictures to share at the moment. However I did take delivery of this little lot last week off a fellow member. Whilst I am going for the OE look on the outside the engine bay is going to be somewhat different to the way it left the factory.

Job for this weekend is to finish getting the gearbox casing sprayed and returned to Colin for the rebuild. I also need to make a list of all the parts I have so I don't keep buying the same thing twice !. I seem to forget what I bought years ago and stashed away.

    Re: Project Old5kool

No real progress again. Went to the body shop and they assure me work on my car will be happening again next week. Some cheeky sod had wrote a D on the side sticker so it now reads GT Turdo. I have however been collecting more parts. Been trying for a while to get a drivers side (i think its that one) door handle. Local dealers couldnt get it and Mike tried as well but to no avail. Managed to track one down in Italy so I now have new handles for both sides . Also got a host of other new goodies but won't spoil it by giving the game away just yet.

A question however. I am planning on running a T2/T25 turbo as big boost is not my ultimate goal and would like fairly low lag. Currently I have both Forge and GT Tuning T3 actuators. Any suggestions what would be most suitable ?.

Fingers crossed some new pictures of how the body work is progressing next week.

I picked up a spare cylinder head yesterday and upon inspection its stamped KTR and CTM 293. Do Ktec use CTM for their headwork ?. Anyone know what the 293 means ?. Also the valve springs appear to have some red paint on them. Uprated perhaps ?.

Red valve springs are standard. Ports might be fettled a bit?

Cheers. I wasn't sure on the significant of the red paint. The ports do like they have been smoothed a bit so perhaps it has been fettled with.

I also picked up a spare turbo. I thought it was a standard item. Just compared it against the original T2 from my car and the exhaust side is different. It's stamped AN 13 HT28. The compressor side looks the same as the original. Again anyone got any ideas ?. The only reason I noticed it was different is because it has some unused holes where the elbow bolts on. To be honest I only got it to use when I run my engine in but if its a hybrid I might just stick with it for the time being, if it's any good of course.

Just found some more numbers on the turbo. Compressor .48 and on the exhaust side 505 ? and 2414 I think. Must be getting old I cant read them properly.

Finally managed to get some free time this morning so painted the gearbox. Thats not primer it is going to be white !. I also couldnt resist chucking the chrome end cap on . I will get that back over to Colin this week, work permitting, to be reassembled. When it comes back I will touch up any paint I missed .

Also got these from CGB in the week as a job lot. I polished my alternator a while back so these fixings should finish it off nicely. Once I have seen which bits I need I will put any spares in the classifieds cheap for anyone else that want to do the same.

Finally this turned up today. A brand new FPR which I was told are no longer available from Renault. I have some good condition ones but being a tart I wanted a new one. I figured the current one has lasted 20 years, so this one should too, which made the cost bearable.

It's been pointed out before, but the chrome tends to let things slip, alternators can lose tension and I think a few other area need watching.

Small update. I spent a couple of hours Saturday at the body shop getting rid of 20 odd years of dirt from the underside of the car so it's ready for under sealing. I also found a couple more small holes so they will be getting rectified. Sorry for the rubbish pics.

I also dropped the gearbox back to Colin last week for him to rebuild with new bearings etc. As I had two boxes he is going to build me one using the best parts from both.

It is indeed, a standard cast manifold that has been chromed. CGB did these a while back. This is just my spare however as I have a new Ktec/Raceland manifold to fit when I build the engine up.

    Re: Project Old5kool

It's been a while so I thought I would give a quick update. Recently had a blood clot in my leg so that's slowed me down a bit. The body shop are still working on the car, although to be fair due to my leg I'm not in too much of a rush to get it back for the time being. Picked up some more parts and also had a chance to sort through all the new parts I already have. I was surprised to say the least and glad I started collecting parts when I did as some items would be near to impossible to get hold of now.

One of the next jobs is to start stripping the engine for a rebuild. I had 5 minutes the other day so thought I would whip the water pump off. Fail - At least half of the bolts snapped so they will have to get sorted when the head is sent off for skimming. As a reference here's the engine as it was when it was taken out. Looks pretty grubby but to be fair it was running fine despite the big mileage. It's going to get a full rebuild then painted white like the gearbox and treated to the chrome goodies and a full set of SFS hoses and many other new bits and bobs.

Once I strip the engine in the next couple of weeks if anyone wants the chrome rocker cover and yellow Samco's (there are 4 in total) pictured on the engine they can have them for the cost of postage. The rocker cover bracket to the right of the picture has come away at the bottom and it does have some rust. The Samco's are filthy but may clean up. If anyone is interested I can always upload some more pics plus you can't beat free

Seems to be coming along brilliantly. What are the plans for the engine build? keep it standard or uprate?

PS..... I'll have the cover and the Samco's thank you very much! Just let me know when you have them ready.

    Re: Project Old5kool

Alex, Parts are all yours. Will let you know once they are taken off.

Plan is to keep the engine internals standard'ish. I have a vernier pulley I will be fitting but most likely will keep the original cam. Pistons and liners are perfect circle jobs rather than forged items. I'm not chasing big power I just want a reliable car I can use when I feel like it. That's kind of why so much will be changed for new.

I do have some new performance parts such as 2.5" downpipe, enlarged turbo elbow, tubular manifold, double cap i/c, lightened flywheel etc.... so hopefully they will free up a little more power. I will probably stick a mild hybrid turbo on as well but that's a little way off yet. I'm going to run it in with a spare turbo I have kicking about just in case there's any crud in the engine that damages the turbo.

    Cheers mate

Sounds good. I've got Perfect Circle pistons and liners in mine and they're great - stand up to a lot of abuse on track so if you do decide to push things a little further at a later date they'll be fine.

Good idea re the turbo. I'd recommend a new braided oil feed with an inline filter. It's amazing how much crud comes out if a new build, even when you think you've been super clean building it!

    Re: Project Old5kool

This week I have managed to pick up some more parts. The trouble with replacing so many bits is you then start looking at the most mundane items and thinking they are going to look rubbish against all the new parts and bodywork. So I got sot some new wiper arms today for that very reason. Not cheap and I could have painted the existing ones but just didn't think it would like quite as good. It's all starting to get a bit OCD but hopefully the end result will justify all the expense.

If anyone has any sources for new window glass I would be interested to hear about them. I can get the new rear quarters in green tint but struggling with front windows and rear tailgate glass. I have a new windscreen tucked away that I picked up years ago so don't need that. Although Renault still list some of the glass they cant tell me if they are green tint. The only way to find out would be to buy them and they wont refund it they are wrong

    Re: Project Old5kool

Yet again not much has happened to the car. Bodyshop swear they will be making progress on my car again soon. In the fourth picture I posted in this thread you will see the drivers side door had a rather large rust scab. When I bought the car it was about the size of a 5 pence piece but being stupid I never sorted it and now it's pretty huge. Original plan was to cut out the rot on the door and weld in new metal. However I managed to get a replacement door skin which I am told wont be too bad to fit. Was a bargain £10 from ebay and I was surprised to find it's a genuine Renault part rather than aftermarket copy so hopefully should fit better too.

My hoarding of parts is continuing so can't wait to actually get the shell back and start bolting some bits on. I know the Rtoc like part's pictures so here is just some of the new parts I found when having a sort out the other week at my parents house. Sorry about the crap picture.

Hopefully my next update will be of a restored shell. The goal is to have the car at National Day this year.

Nothing beats new parts! What ever you do, never add up what you've spent Are you having it repainted in pearl again?

JRP have you seen these - http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/SOLEX-32-D...item53f10f4338

Possibly about the nearest to new you will get. The one I have is a direct replacement but those seem to be long gone...

Yes going to be pearl again. I hate to think what I've spent and certainly wont be adding it up. Heaven forbid the Mrs ever finds out how much I have spent
