    Rumbling noise

My gt turbo has developed a deep rumbling/rubbing noise.

Basically its similar to a wheelbearing noise but not constant, it happens every couple of revolutions. It only happens between 30-60mph, regardless of rpm, gear, turning or braking doesnt affect it. Even with clutch pressed & coasting it makes no difference. Its hard to tell if it makes the noise under acceleration due to the exhaust.

Up to now i have changed both front wheel bearings, this has made no difference at all. I have also changed the gearbox oil.

Any suggestions? I have been advised it could be the tyres!? Im thinking the gearbox is noisy but unsure as they usually whine?

    Re: Rumbling noise

Can you tell if it's coming from a particular side?

I'm pressuming you checked the passenger side shaft where it slots into the gearbox? I have seen the roller bearing things on the end of the shaft come off before now, you can usually feel it pretty consistently when that happens.

Its hard to say really, sounds more passenger side? Theres no vibration as of such so i assume the shaft is ok, they usually vibrate like feck if the tripod bearings collapse?

Try changing the hubs for a different set and try a different set of driveshafts.

if you think its coming from one side, swap the wheels/tyres left to right and test it, if noise changes you know its them

Im going to swap wheels front to back later. I wonder if it is the fecking shafts? Id expect noise all the time and vibration though from previous experiences. Could it be a bearing on its way on the box?

    Re: Rumbling noise

I got some cheapy part worn tyres fitted to my driving school car and they made it sound like a bearing was on it's way out, are the tyres old? I got kind of a droning sound, was worse on new/smooth tarmac. Changed the tyres for new budgets and hey ho the noise went away, maybe try another set of wheels/tyres?

Chepest test is to stick another set of wheels and tyres on then if that doesn't solve it time to start taking things apart.

Agree some tyres are much noisier than others, to the point where they sound like a wheel bearing is gone, tracking and camber out can also increase the tyre noise.

    Re: Rumbling noise

Changed tyres back to front no difference. The noise just starts before 30 and goes approx 40, its fecking annoying when driving round the streets. Thinking on it has made this noise for ages but nowhere near as loud. Looks like the only option is to ride it out and let it develop?!

    Re: Rumbling noise

Nothin daft like the bottom pulley cover is moving around at those speeds and rubbing ? - you know the large plastic slab that "protects" the pulley from the water / salt etc splashing up

    Re: Rumbling noise

Well i ran it up on axle stands and no noise although the drivers side shaft seemed noisy when moving the steering hmm.

Went to the ring & back and its no worse after 1400 miles of abuse!? Still exactly the same.
