    Project FUBAR - R5 GTT F7P Turbo - Durham

Hi Everyone, I wasn't too sure how to start this thread so I'm just going to jump straight in and let you know what my plan is and show you what I'm dealing with Right well here we go...

I bought the car in summer 2010 from a fellow RTOCer and although I've had my fair share of problems i don't regret buying her one bit I put her off the road for winter 2010. Then in march 2011, shortly after the MOT, my engine died a horrible death and i didn't have the money or time to fix it so the car has sat on the drive as a garden ornament ever since.
Over the past few months I've been on and off as to either cut my losses and move on, replace the C1J or do an engine conversion. As you can see I've come to my decision and hopefully it's the right one.
My plan is to replace the good old C1J with an F7P which i have purchased from Finch along with a few other bits and bobs. I'm planning on running this on stand alone management and stripping the car to its bare minimal as it will be used purely for weekend / track use so all bling and unnecessary crap will be removed and sold to help pay for the ECU.

As I'm running on a small budget i will have to save for the more expensive items so i aim to have this on the road for spring / summer 2013, hopefully more expensive items being ECU, Turbo (either re-con the one i have or new), a roll cage that won't kill me and some seats and harnesses but they can be done later
Please be aware this is my first car project of any kind and i literally have no idea where to begin or what goes where and what needs to be fitted in what order I'm totally clueless but very enthusiastic to get stuck in and learn as much as i can about these awesome little machines I'm sure i will have plenty of questions so in return I'm going to supply you with lots and lots of pics.

Well thats the boring stuff out the way with, here they come

It's just oil and rust from parts that have been stored in the car. There is a slight bit of surface rust in the boot but overall pretty good

Below shows the rust behind the right plastic thing in the boot

Below shows the rust behind the left plaastic thing in the boot

The engine bay thats going to be stripped of everything

I think these bits are nos related

    Some truely terrible wiring

some more wiring in the passanger foot well

Planning on removing the electric windows and just fit some standard windy jobbys

Surface rust on the roof and the "cage of death"

Now for the Nasty stuff, the following are taken from under the passenger sill

    Now the drivers side

    Passanger side shocker

    Drivers side

Not sure what i need to keep or can sell but this is some of the stuff i have (minus what Finch is sending up this week)

Sorry folks have to pop out

    To be continued...

I have 2 turbo units, one which has AiResearch on it and another with just Garrett. Apparently the AiResearch unit is a T28 but I don't know exactly how to tell. This was working when my 5 died but has a fair bit of play in both directions.

and the second turbo which has alot of play

I'd just like to say that everybody’s comments and opinions will be welcome I'm interested in everything you have to say whether it be a suggestion or a criticism.

Thanks for looking and I'll try and keep this thread as updated as possible

    Joe

Lee's old motor, glad to see your getting stuck in and saving it as the rust looks pretty nasty!

good luck with the project and as your on a budget your might not have to use a standalone ecu as i think theres a company that live map's the std clio 16v ecu? just an idea it might save you a penny or two.

Cheers Alan, i'll look into it. Any idea what the company name is?

Thanks Tony, the pictures show the only real rust on the car apart from a bit round the filler cap and some on the boot but overall it looks pretty solid. I'm going to have to find somebody to fix the sills up. As i don't have a welder and would probably make a mess of it if i did

I also remember there being some around the bumper brackets but ill check them when my car cover comes and i can get the front end off

I've just had a read through the site and it all looks good but a little unprofessional. I'm strugling to find where its at and any real contact info. Is this a new company? does anybody know anybody who has had any work done here? there is a supercharged clio someone might reckognise

Just a little update, the engine and bits i bought came today, on a big ass pallet so i thought I'd make a start stripping the engine bay.

    RHS bumper mount looks ok

LHS not so good. How are these fixed? i seem to remember seeing somebody having some new ones made up? sounds like Ashy's doing?

Bonnet, bumper, grill and intercooler + most pipework removed

    Close-up of previous pic

    Close-up of previous pic

A few more bits i removed. I think the next 2 pics are part of a water injection kit can anyone confirm?

NOS pipework removed. If your interested in any of this stuff im removing give me a shout most of it will be going up for sale when i get the chance (all 5 stuff that won't be used in the conversion).

Some more goodies, Forged low comp pistons on megan 225 rods i think.

After spending the best part of the afternoon stripping the engine bay of everything bar a few wires, brake booster, some pipework, and a few bits i wasn't sure of i decided to tuck her away for the night

Next on the to do list is to get the engine looked at and cleaned along with cleaning the engine bay. What's the best way to do this? i am thinking pressure washer and a shed load of degreaser

I would also like to take this opertunity t thanks Finch, James, for the parts and all of time he's spent answering my endless barrage of questions

Cheers for reading folks, drive safely

Your welcome matey glad it all got to you ok

Ref the 2 pics yes they are both to do with your water injection looks like the first pic is your screen washer bottle that has been used as the water injection tank, 2nd pic is the water injection pump, you should have a mist valve and loom for it aswell

Coincidence? I've sent Scoff a PM this evening regarding what he thinks of the difference in f4 and f7 rods.

The f7 rods are a lot beefier so i reckon they'll atleast take more than f4 rods.
How much however is trial and error!

Very keen in seeing this project though! Whe're doing what Renault never did, build the F engines with turbo!

Just a quick update as i haven't managed to get out done over the past few days

I found this under the car it looks like it should be attached, maybe an exhaust bracket? but which one i don't know?

Also I have a question about Stand alone management, do i need to keep any wiring thats already in or can i pull the lot out? By the lot i mean everything. I've decided that as she is not going to be my daily driver to only keep what i really need, essentially a go kart with a roof.

    Great car!!!

Good to see there's life in the old slag still.
Miss working on it every weekend.
But marriage and kids took over my life.

Not sure what's happening with the engine but it did have a piper 285 in.
And that carb was set up by scoff to take 20psi.
    Did a good job to

The second washer tank and pump is for the water injection.
Aquamist jobbie. There's a black relay in the scuttle panel which is part of it to and a sensor I think.

    Few years ago that was.

Still say that R5 was much faster than this meg trophy I have now

The bigger turbo is a t28 Ktec unit.
Always had a little play. Had it refurbed and it pulled like a train.

Te smaller unit if it's the one that I chucked in was an old stage 7 gt tuning t2/t25 hybrid.
It died not sure if it's rebuildable

The wiring for the water injection is shocking! I did that but it worked
The roll cage is cosmetic only so is pure death on roll.
Aim with that cage was to not roll the car lol.

The door pins were weak to. As on acceleration from 60mph to 100 the doors tried to open.
If you haven't done them you may want to with an f7p conversion.

The downpipe is a decent size
Gt tuning effort with lambda bung weld on.
Looks a bit brown from te photos but should sell.

The chrome cage just needs a bit of a clean by looks of it.
    Purely cosmetic!

The side exit is a Ktec one. Unless you plan on keeping it for the f7p (get some ear plugs lol) my last hearing test results showed damage in my left ear!!! I associate that with the old setup in this car.

The piper will sell to. Pulled like a monster coupled with the T28.
Scoff stuck that bad boy in the car to
So get on to them and get it back if you can.

The head was ported however was skimmed might not be much cop now unless it's
    Coupled with a compression plate.
Not sure if that's the done thing anymore or even a viable option.

The TDC sensor is adjustable. Might be worth trying to flog that.
Won't fetch much mind but comes in handy to anyone running high boost and high compression (nutcases)
