    compression test results WTF

I might of cocked this right up, don't see how though.
These are my results starting at water pump:

    1 55psi
    2 50psi
3 0 yes big fat zero (tested 4 times)
    4 75

This makes a lot of sense as my five is running like a bag of nails.
When i remove ht lead from number 3, it doesn't make a differance to the note of the engine. If i remove the lead from any other plug she just dies.
Afr's are all over the shop too sit around 17 on idel, mixture screw is about half the way out and lots of choke is needed before she will idel. Also stinks of petrol.

1550miles since i paid 659 british pounds for new rings to be fitted (i even supplied the rings) at a local vw specialist (yes i know). Just had the five sprayed in the orginal perl white and was looking forward to my first National Day too.

Going back to the garage that did the work tomorrow and gonna get them to do a compression test. Not sure what to do though, as has have sweet feck all faith in there workmanship. Anyone fancy a few days in Cornwall?

Id check tappet clearances first. check that there not holding the valves open. then redo compression test.

Would run, very badly!! Sounds like there is something very wrong with your rings. I'd get it back to the garage who did the work and tell them to sort it! Could have snapped rings or you have oversized pistons fitted?

Is it chugging smoke/steam/vapour out of the rocker cover if you take your cap off? while running.

    Re: compression test results WTF

Try the garage, but i doubt they will want to do anything.

    Could be:
    timing
    rings / liner
    piston
    head gasket
    valves bent
vv clearances or something to do with valves staying open
    cracked head

Then take it home, get a head gasket, some sump sealant, and a piston and liner set off MIKE PH1 16V and whip the head off, drop the sump and do the rings yourself, you can easily - easily - do it in a day if you follow the haynes manual.

The you know it is done right and you can come to ND.

Will do valve clearances tomorrow, then retest compression.
Hope to be laughing about it a ND.

Not done the valves, but did the brake cleaner test on inlet manifold. And yep that explains the grazy afr's and mixture. Ordered up a new inlet manifold gasket and gonna check everything over and do another compression test on Monday.

    Re: compression test results WTF

Manifold gasket won't affect compression readings. Just whip rocker cover off and see if some of the valves have free play at the rockers. Still sounds like ring issue though.

    Nope.

Think i might of got a bit exsited as did the brake cleaner test with carb top off, now with carb top on no differeance. At leats i got all my exaust leaks sorted today.
Gonna get my mate who's a mechanic to have a look monday, as working all weekend.

youd have to have no rings to get a 0psi surely. head gasket gone between 2 cylinders

Gonna try another compression tester, tested the same cyclinder again dry got nothing, tested it with the king lead on dissy and i'm now at 125psi.

I'm new to this game take it easy on me

No oil in water or water in oil, going do valve clearaness and go from there.

    Re: compression test results WTF

Just took the 5 to pick up another compression tester from my mate, i'll try this tomorrow. Don't think compression can be that much of a issue though as drove fine, just kept on stalling at low rev's. (i had the mixture screw wound most of the way in). I don't know if its related by I have fitted an electrical aem boost gauge into the pipe from carb base to iae, and the readings are all over the place. Its like the further i drive the higher the boost readings after a while it doesn't return to negitive pressure when off boost. The oe boost gauge readings are normal however.
Much help appreciated 7 days till ND

sounds like you have a large air leak if you have no vacuum readings.

    Re: compression test results WTF

Just retested the compression with a differant tester, results are as follows this time starting at gear box side as was informed this is the corrent order:

    1: 10bar 145ish psi
    2: 2bar 20ish psi
    3:10bar 145ish psi
    4:11bar 155ish psi

Does this mean rings or could it be a valve issue, i know i've got to check the valves, just not had the time as yet. Thanks

I'd say piston rings we recently had same prob but it may be head related recheck pressures with a small amount of oil down bore and post new pressures after boss

    May be gasket
    May be liner
    May be Rings
    May be valves
Mating surfaces of head / block
    Protrusion of pistons

Start with the simple stuff 1st and think of what you've changed.

Put about a 10mls of oil in the bore and got 3 1/2 bar on retest. Does this mean definately rings?

I'd risk driving it to Ivybridge if ur offering though.

Check tappet clearances............!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! lol start with the simple free stuff. with no clearance then the valve wont close so you wont get any compression.
If you dont kno how to do clearances then just make sure you can move the rockers
when the valves arent open on that cylinder.

Got it! don't worry i'm not going to do anything drastic till i have checked the valves. I've been told to jack the fount end up, and turn the engine over using a wheel. And then use the count to nine method. If this makes sense. I'll try this Sunday or Monday.

Roll on National Day! Exaust valve clearance on number two adjusted, now got 150psi. With put everything back together and fingers crossed, I shall see some of you peeps next weekend.

Well not yet, still running lean. Think i have found the problem though as this:http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/RENAULT-5-...item5d3200a60c Has been damaged at some point and been siliconed up and how come lose (well it fell off in my hand). Think the treads are still in the manifold though.

This would cause lean AFR's right? Hope theres not another issue waiting for me.

Oh its the one that goes to the brake servo, might explain my poor brakes too.

the threads should come out with a flat head screwdriver wedged in there.
you could always swap it with the breather circuit one and use ptfe on a bolt and screw it in there temporarily? - its a tapered thread though

alot of vacuum from those valves, so this will be affecting your idle, afrs massively.
