    Automatic GT Turbo

    Howdy all,

I took a friend out for a spin in my little R5 last night had he has fallen in love, with the car not me! The issue/problem is that he only has a "automatic licence".

I spoke Markey Mark briefly last night about the options:

    1) Buy an automatic Campus and put in a c1j lump
    2) Buy a GT Turbo and put in an auto box

A couple of things: Can you get an automatic Campus? What other models (automatics) would a c1j turbo lump fit into?

Also, has anyone done this before or something similar?

Is he limited to what he can drive from a disability or just can't use a manual.

Just can't drive a manual. (it has always surprised me why someone would go for an auto licence but each to their own)

For the hassle and cost he's best to get a manual licence.

Aren't the auto boxes rated to about 80hp?

    Re: Automatic GT Turbo

The drive shafts i got off ebay for my 9 turbo came from a automatic 9 with a 1.7 engine in i believe, 82 bhp i think as stated, shafts are the same thickness as the C1J shafts.

I think you'd just slip the torque converter or boil the fluid in no time. I suppose it might be OK at 120hp ? Does the torque converter lock in those transmissions ?

    Re: Automatic GT Turbo

Thanks all for the responses. I need to work out if the auto box (80 odd BHP) will take the 120 BHP (standard) that the c1j will put out? I also think the auto box is 3 speed?

a 5 auto box is 3speed! ur also going to have to cut the ign or boost when it is changing gear or else ur clutches will not last.....i dont think its the 80bhp....more the 120ft/lbs

i would just learn to drive a manual, to make it auto is going to be a real pain, unreliable at best and he will soon get fed-up of people asking him why.
if he had a dissability meaning there was no other choice maybe, but for the sake of a bit of practice and a driving test imho it just isnt worth it

There is no reason why somebody cant drive a manual car.... I have been a driving instructor for 6 years... Not had a person who cant drive a manual car... And believe me i have had some monkeys wanting to drive

    Re: Automatic GT Turbo

Torque converters dont suffer like normal clutches, fluid spun within a centrifugal force... Know the starlets did an auto box in the turbo version with the same box in the n/a version so if you can get hold of a box id bolt it in to a gtt and have a go, worst case a load of pas/at fluid over the floor...

Is there a different wiring circuit so you can't start it in gear?

    Re: Automatic GT Turbo

friend of mine over on C16V had to have an auto for disability reasons, he fitted an RSi clio lump to his clio champs elysees auto. that lump is a 1.8 8v 110bhp and the auto box handled it in terms of power, he just had a few electrical gremlins trying to splice in his 1.8 loom to include the auto box and its wiring/ecu.

I don't think he ever got it running 100% but it worked and drove okay at one stage before another issue crept in.

point is, it can be done ;-)

Usually an inhibitor switch on the gb that sits inbetween the starter solenoid and switch, couple of wires at very worst

    Re: Automatic GT Turbo

I think this will end in tears. More time and money involved doing this than taking a few more lessons and upgrading his driving licence.

Keep us updated though as it will be very interesting.

Tell him to man up and do his manual test i dare say it could be done but to enjoy the driving experience it needs to be manual im afraid!!

    Re: Automatic GT Turbo

LMAO... and again, thanks for the comments and opinions

This seems like too much hassle, the geezer wants something to be put together and drive away. Might be more trouble than its worth to be honest, not that I'm scared of the hard work, its the come backs when/if something goes wrong. If it was simple case of either points 1 or 2 in me first post, then he would do it.

P.S. he did not take it very well when I told him to get a "proper license", my bad for not wording it correctly!
