    wont start no fuel

My cars never had trouble starting untill the day before yesterday i pulled it out the garage and i couldnt start it to get it back in so had to roll it back in

first thing i checked was for spark on the plugs and that was fine

second was the tdc and there was a little burn on the one wire so tapped that up

third was the relay in the scuttle panel and then the fuel pump relay under the passenger side footwell there was a burn mark on the plug and also inside the relay on the back of the board but i thought this was fine as i could still hear the fuel pump priming when cranking the engine over

I then checked for fuel i pulled the main pipe off the carb and cranked the engine bone dry i then pulled the pipe off the fuel filter and cranked engine to see if it was the fuel regulator or the pipes upto it no fuel.

pulled the fuel filter off and cranked again still no petrol i then swapped the fuel pump and with another one still no fuel also checked both pumps with jump leads and they both spin up

    any ideas guys???????

    Fuel pump relay.

Behind the glovebox , a black "lego" brick style connector

    I suspect that has failed.

What colour wires do I bridge on the fuel pump relay to rule this out

Just tried that no joy Still no fuel coming out the fuel pump! How do you open the top on the fuel tank from inside the car to see if any pipes have come off inside

I've tried two pumps and they both spin up one was a brand new unit last year and the second a working one that was swapped for the new unit

silly question but is there definatly fuel in the tank?

somtimes the tank unit can fall apart and give false redings on the gauge .. so it would be worth pulling out the tank unit and cheacking both the amount of fuel and the tank unit itself

Funny you say that as when I pulled the sender unit out late last night it was dry but there seems to be a good bit in the reserve tank! It might be a false reading on the petrol gauge as that was showing just about first mark going to get a good bit of fuel in it tonight

How does the fuel get from the reserve to the main does it just fill up the main when the reserve is full or isit pumped throu?

Because theres a little pump on the reserve but the one pipe that goes to the motor has never been connected allthou the fuel gauge used to go up and down so it looked like it was swapping between tanks

Just to note it has allways been like this and never had any fuel trouble in the 7 years I've had the car

You need to see if you are getting 12v at the fuel pump relay plug RED wire (pin 6) and go from there.

    Here's the wiring diagram:

    And the colour code guide:

Put some fuel down in with the sender and bit more down into the reserve car now starts will try and get it to a petrol station and get a good bit in there and see how it goes from there

maybe your gauge is reading wrong and it was just out of fuel?
my gauge is not the most accurate.

    Re: wont start no fuel

I had a similar problem, turned out to be the relay, dry joints, use a sharp Bradle to clean off any brown from the solder joints - carefully though!

I used a 12v power supply, connected it to the terminals on the fuel pump - noted the pump began to run and pump fuel. Checked this by removing hose from carb (drivers side).

My tdc sensor had the wires cut in several places and spade connected back together, so I repaired that by soldering a new wire run, from ECU plug to sensor - sometimes those spade connectors, have quite high resistance.

Luckily the ECU is quite simple, so fault finding should not be much of a chore, in comparison to modern cars!

    Good luck.
