    Re: T-Cup becomes the ST-Cup!

Thought it was time for me to update the progress on the ST-Cup. Couldn't believe i didn't update this thread since BEFORE Blyton in 2012?! Where DOES the time go?!

Anyway following on from the previous posts, I was all ready for the RTOC 2012 Festival Blyton Park and on the Friday I loaded the car onto the trailer and set off to the petrol station to Filler'up!? It soon became evident that the F***ing bung in the petrol tank had split so fuel was gushing out!

I figured I couldn't do anything further with the car until I got to Blyton so I drove all the way up there with fuel spilling out of the tank. A lit match would have marked my journey there that day?!

When I got to Blyton I set to work trying to fix it and had to end up removing the tank and lashing loads of various chemical metal/sealants etc all over it to get it to seal. It was a real job from hell and I would like to thank Tony Walker, Kris M and Nick Kettle for their help in sorting it that day!

The next day I was ready for the Blyton Park Trackday and when I went out on the sighting lap i realised it was the first time i'd actually driven the car any further than up & down my drive?!

The sighting laps proved to me that the work I had done on the brakes/cooling had been worthwhile so I immediately put the slicks on and got stuck into the day! It's fair to say that I soon got the hang of T-Cup and loved every minute

I was really impressed by T-Cup on the track at Blyton, and had no complaints at how it either went or stopped for that matter!!

During the day at Blyton I gave T-Cup to the guys from M-Tech automotive and gave it a run on the rollers.

It was at this point that I suspected the old engine out of Trusty might have seen better days as the peak power the car produced was 135.9HP at the flywheel (lets not get into that whole Rolling road figures debate ). I had a chat with Bill and he reckoned a few horses had bolted the stable the last time he drove it?

When I got the car home I checked to see what the compression was and was surprised to see a reading of 45 - 50 psi across all cylinders?? I first thought it was a monkey pressure tester so got a second hand Snap On one... sure enough that improved the situation a little but still only showed a max of 75 psi. So with that I decided to give the engine a well deserved rebuild!

    Re: T-Cup becomes the ST-Cup!

So first thing was to whip the engine back out of T-Cup

And I then completely disassembled the engine to it's component parts.

When I disassembled it though, it looked as though their had been something rattling around in the sump at one time that knocked 7 bells of sh1te out of the bottom of piston #1?

I need to upload some pictures of the Con-Rod and bottom of the piston, in the picture above, you can see some scratches on the walls of the block, but the piston looked REALLY bad?!

I took the block to Surface Processing Limited in Birmingham to be chemically dipped and stripped of all the nasty paint & rust & it came back looking like new

I then got busy with the old engine enamel and gave it a few coats

I've then had the crankshaft re-ground, Knife edged, tuftrided, polished and then finally balanced ready to go back in

I had Nick Kettle and Kris M come over to see me for the weekend of the Southern Christmas Dooo in December, so I put them both to work helping me put it back together to stave off sitting in the pub ALL day!

I had the head re-skimmed, new valves fitted and then the exhaust ports matched to the manifold.

I've now installed a Piper 270 cam (decided against the 285 because I'm not looking for big power, just more useability on track) and vernier pulley.

Kris came over to see me again during Christmas (to drink us dry as he'd exhaused his family's supply of booze) and helped me fit the head on

Together with the bit of bling I just couldn't resist, a set of the Alloy roller bearing cam followers that were being discussed on here a couple of days ago. I'll let you know how they turn out?!

Don't worry, I know i've still got to put the pushrods in!

So that brings you up to exactly where I am now! I've yet to get the cam timing sorted (was waiting for a DTI Gauge to arrive but Mart has lent me one so I can get cracking this weekend) so that's what i'll be doing this weekend!!

    Thanks for looking guys!

think about it you have removed the counter balance from the crank that is about the same wieght as the piston assy

i hope you have removed the same wiegth from the pistons and con rods

    Re: T-Cup becomes the ST-Cup!

When I first got ol'whitey running it ran spot on but due to a few smokey issues I did a comp test and got similar low results. I put it down to it being sitting for a long time and the rings either losing their spring or becoming seized into the pistons... I've never stripped it down to have a look.

Rebuild looks good, she should go well with the extra 40 - 50hp

    Rolling Road Graph from 2012:

Rolling road results from ND 2013 (will upload graph later) 98 BHP!

Looks like my winter rebuild was a complete waste of money & something's obviously wrong somewhere to have lost almost 40bhp...

It looked and sounded a lot more than that Steve. When it went up the ramp I made a guess of 170. Really shocked at that figure. Exhaust turbine isn't 'lunched' is it?

Dyno was well out mate due to heat.

Mine was 35BHP down from a mapping at a very reputable tuner.

Funny this thread should just come back to the top of the pile now!? I've not managed to get in contact with Mr Steve Jones as yet, but "Thomson Detectives Incorporated" are certainly picking up a few more leads on him....

I recently won a piece of Cup Car Gold on eBay. The full 1987 and 1990 Press Packs from the elf Turbo UK Cup and in the 1987 pack was a picture of every driver who raced in the 1987 series.....

So there's my man, Mr Steve Jones bottom right next to Barrie Whizzo Williams!! In the pack was also his Biog and I know
    • In 1987 he was 23 (so he's 49/50 now)
    • He was a Self Employed Gents Clothing Retailer in Bury!
    • His racing background was the 5TS challenge, runner up 1985 and then winner in 1986, so he obviously had some pedigree!!
I've also scanned all the rest of the pictures of the drivers from the 1987 championship so you can have a look:

    There's certainly some boys there!!
