    Arthur's R9 F7R Turbo: Video added

As promised here is my R9 project thread!
The car how I bought it in December 2010:

It was a non running 1.4, the heater matrix started leaking and the previous owner thought he would make it to the garage without coolant :P
No problem for me as this gave me the opportunity to buy it cheap. Heater matrix was replaced and when they tried to start the car it appeared the engine was gone.
I didn’t even knew what a Renault 9 was but after searching “Renault 1986” on Marktplaats.nl (marketplace.nl) it popped up 15km away from my house. Gave the man a call and eventually bought it for €400.
First thing I did was remove the 1,4 engine and after breaking the donor Willy the engine went into the 9 (don’t have pics of it. However you can imagine how it looks like in the bay of a 9).
Fitting the engine in to the bay was the easy part, the worst part was wiring it all up. Unfortunately the 9 doesn’t have 1 big connector but the diagnosis (oil press light, alternator light etc.) connector sits on the right side of the bay.
When finally I got everything wired up properly it was time to custom fit the shifter rod and the exhaust, this is how the exhaust looks:

It didn’t take long before I started ‘pimping’ the car, so out came the coilies which were on the Willy and lowered the rear torsion bar too, I also took a small lip off the Sport alloys so they’d fit in the rear arches cause it was a bit tight!

And this is how it looks:

Took the bumpers and spoiler off and sprayed them matt black to make them look “as new” (could be done again by now) and fitted new chrome strips.
Imo the front was to high but I couldn’t wind down the coilies any further (bumpstop already hacksawed to 1cm and only have 1cm left to move).
after searching around the net I discovered Golf 1 topmounts would be the solution, I sawed a few centimeters off the top to clear the hood and also make them a bit weaker so they would flex when weight is on the wheels:

The front has been lowered by 4cm extra or so:

The driveshafts now hit the beams however it’s a self clearing issue :P
And here is it next to my €300 winter 5:

    And on the driveway:

Lowering it this much offcourse comes with risks which soon came true:

Look at the crack on top off the thread! And the rest looks like this:

The rear was still a tad too high compared tot he front so pulled the torsion bar out again and lowered it by another 3cm (last time I measured it was more than 12cm more to the ground than factory specs):

Got a bit bored by the Sport wheels so bought a brand new set of BBS LM replica’s, took them to the machinery to take 5mm off the inner lip and fitted 185/35/17 tyres:

Looking at previous pics i don’t have to tell you it was a hell off a job to make it fit! Lots of hamering and angle grinding involved, and I still doesn’t fit actually :P (not to mention the front on full lock!).

    Some fun down town:

And it now looks like this, the APK (MOT) trim:

Am tired of typing now so will post an update soon!

    Tutuur's R9 F7R Turbo: running again!

you've hit the sweet spot right there mate!

first of all i have to say, i already have a fully forged F7R in the shed which is going to drive the Gtt, only thats taking a while so had to build something in the meantime!
that said this build had to be as low budget (but good) as possible. so not spending money on new stuff when it could be used easily....also the goal was to do as much as possible myself, it being the first engine i ever rebuilt.

i did replace bearings, rings, arp rod bolts etc. as i didn't want to budget out the wrong bits.

    pics:

and some pics of the engine in the 9, i first had to tidy up the bay a bit.
    from:

    to:

    chargecooler rad behind the grille:

    and engine in:

had some fun with the torsion bars out a while ago btw :P

    Hi Arthur

Good to see you on rtoc

Are you using F4R pistons and rods ? I would avoid the F4R rods, they are not very strong! F7R rods are much stronger.

Hi Chris, glad to see you here too!

I used stock F7R rods with machined pistons.
Looking at "steer from the rear's" pistons they would hold up to 250 horses probably

yes i made that one myself, a RTC member welded it up for me.

Done a few things today, first i have put the sport wheels back on and lowered the rear to match the front (going further down when everything is up and running):

Also finished the bay, as in: cut down the clio heatshield to fit, assemble the chargecoolerpump and fill up and mount the plug cover etc.:

    headgasket has gone already

i blasted in 4th and when i let go off the gas there was nothing but smoke in the rear view mirror! however i don't get it, i decked the block and skimmed the head.

tightened the head bolts exactly according procedure, had no markings of det but still the HG went. was this just random?

Arthur not good matey, think you may need to turn the boost down and make up a stethoscope det / knock sensor, and you will defo need to look into a proper / custom map for it aswell.

I feel for you matey all that time and not long and it's gone, is that a spesso gasket aswell? Personally if I was you I would just put in a standard but decent branded gasket Mellior or OE from renault this time around.

Nah mate, it's a gasket set from ebay. Shirley.... Sells them. Will probably going to use OE Renault this time.

No signs of knock anywhere, it runs pretty rich! Also no signs of anything else that went wrong so i just think the gasket isn't exactly the same quality as it supposed to be!
If i can locate some headbolts i'll probably have it up and running again by the end of tomorrow

Get the head bolts from the club shop, there for the Volvo lump but there the same as F7P/R jobs

    two things fella

    1. don't use ebay headgaskets, if your going to use standard get a genuine or a payen type as they are tested and reputable

    2. get a wideband gauge on there asap, check the fuelling from the chip

that should ensure the build lasts next time around :-)

    Thnx for the heads up!

I only used the ebay one as everybody uses them. Only i was the first on to put some positive pressure on it

I'd like the head bolts from the club shop only they won't be here in time. Maybe i'll just call it a quit and have it fixed next weekend then. How do you guys tighten the 12.9 jobbies?

Ben, i have a afr meter. On full boost 4000tpm it's 12:1 and the higher the revs the richer it gets...

ebay cardboard head gasket don't use, as Ben suggested and myself go for genuine OE, payen, mellior type I used mellior in mine and didn't have any prob's got mine from k-tec for about £30 inc postage, and I used standard bolt's doing the 5step sequence. I think I have read some peeps ujse the rtoc club shop bolts and do 90nm

5 steps so you don't retighten them? That was described with my bolts, undo them after cooling and then another 25nm + 170 degrees...

90nm dry i suppose? I think i'm going to remove the complete engine btw as my crank seal is leaking too

That has detonated, are you sure the compression ratio is right for the chip ? Detonation tends not to show on the piston unless it was caused by a lean condition.

Re: Tutuur's Renault 9 project thread!

Are you sure thats det? I didn't hear or feel anything aquard.
I'm running 10 psi on 9,2:1 CR. Chip was written on a F7P low boost with 802's and i tried my luck with 803's on the F7R.

Runs pretty rich so i don't think that would be the problem...
I've done a bit of research and everyone tells me they retighten the headbolts 25nm+107 or don't retighten them at al. This is what my paper said:

My guess is that the gasket was squeezed to much and the bolts are stretched beyond elastic limit too. When i undid the bolts i could use a ratchet with ease while when torqing them i used a big torque wrench and had to pull pretty hard....

Tutuur, I've seen enough dead turbo engines over the years to know when one has detonated

Ignition timing and compression ratio play just as big a role.

Your F7P's chip will have very different ignition timing to the F7R. Unless you were listening with a knock box you will not have heard detonation at high rpm. You really can't use a chip from one engine and expect it to work in another.

If you don't want to find an F7R chip then you will at least need to think about dropping compression or retarding the ignition and then having the engine properly monitored for knock.

Thanks for the heads up Chris, i knew it was a gamble thats why i don't feal defeatened.
This is a learning prcess for me, hence i came back home smillling as i already knew the HG went.

Currently have all parts in home to build the engine up again. I'll try again on 0,4bar with det cans. If that runs without det i'll keep it this way untill i can map it...

    Really appreciate all the help!

    Only didn't specify what exactly...

Going to tow the car to the shed end of this afternoon. My goal is to have it up and running again by the end of tomorrow
