I want to give my brakes a good clean and check the wear on the rear pads. What is the process of removing them? I cannot budge anything.
Here is a pic of what I have. Also, can I change just the rear pads or do I have to do fronts at the same time?

Let the hand brake off, undo the two 17mm headed bolts that hold the pad carrier on and stick the pad carrier in the vice.
Take the little clip from the slider and knock the slider out with a small drift/chisel.
Pads will become loose.
You can wind the caliper back with a screw driver a couple of turns, and make sure the sliders are free.
See how you get on.
pull the bottom of those 2 long silver springs that run from top to bottom of each pad, watch it as they might spring over and nip your fingers, use pliers
pull the little locking pin out from the bottom right corner, looks like a silver loop
then gentle with a hammer and punch knock the anlge plate that pin came out of from the back of the caliper outwards
the pads will now be free to remove, you then need a rewind tool to push the piston back in then fit new pads and away you go, simples

Yes you can remove the pads and carrier the way I do it.... and rewind the caliper without a wind back tool.
Once the carrier is out of the way push the caliper on its sliders away from the disc, then you will see that the caliper piston has a 'X' machined into it, locate a half decent sized screw driver shank into the 'X' and with pressure against the piston turn the piston in a clockwise direction into the caliper body.
i got the old pads out and got the new one in without too much trouble.
i am having trouble getting the securing pin back in with the wire clips in place. what do the wire clips actually do? they are making it to tight to put the slide pin back in.
You only put the securing pin in once you slide the bracket back in place

am i supposed to put the wire clips in after i fit the securing slide bar?
Are we talking about the anti rattle clips or the clip which holds the bar in place? if so put the anti rattle clips in last as those stop the pads from moving easily.
Yes anti rattle clips. I have fitted the bar in place but can't fit the anti rattle clips as it is too tight. Should the anti rattle clips be fitted like in my above pics?
Yes, they are fitted correctly above, think I left them loose whilst fitting the bar at the bottom, did use a lot of copper grease to make them slide a lot easier in and out when fitting the little bracket.
What parts did you coat in copper grease?
So it should all be tight and hard to get the bar back in with the anti rattle clips fitted?
As the anti rattle clips stop the pads from sliding about so will be difficult to slide the bar in when the anti rattle clips hold the pads in tight. Just put the loop end around the end of the pad, cooper grease the angled bar and caliper where it slides on to, then put it in place and then locate the anti rattle clip over the pad.
Will try again using your method.

Struggling with the passenger side. What a horrible job. It seems you need two pairs of hands, one to hold the pad in place and another to hit the bar in.
I was getting annoyed so left it...
i have now finally got the new pads in with the anti rattle clips fitted correctly. i have put everything back together and pumped the brake pedal several times to reset the caliper.
i used the brakes and it seems like there is nothing coming from the rear. when i apply the handbrake it is not holding. have i done somehing wrong or is this normal as the pads are brand new?
Sounds like the pads are not close to the discs, see what sort of gap there is between the pads and discs as you might not have pumped them enough or that they are not getting any fluid to them to press on the disc for some reason
how much pumping should it take? i have not dis assembled the caliper at all and it was working fine before i removed the old pads.
when fitting the new ones the discs spin freely and i can hear a light rubbing so the pads are making contact with the discs.
also the handbrake lever feels alot stiffer than before but it will not hold the brakes on and the car rolls. maybe more pumping is required.?.
If the pads are nearly touching the the discs shouldn't have any problem with the cables or braking, was the caliper bracket sliding fine at the back as I have had it locked before causing it to not be effective when braking.
I can't say I noticed the caliper sliding. Where does it slide from? Maybe it needs freeing and a general clean up.
Erm been a long time since I had to sort out the rear calipers, but like the front there should be two bars which connect the two sections up of the caliper, the main section to the carrier, this means that it will not press against the disc unevenly, but even still you should get some braking force from one side of the pad.
Are the handbrake cables loose?
I will have a look. I had no problems before so I don't know why it would break now.
Where do you adjust the handbrake from?
Only adjustment is right by the hand brake lever
